Festivals of Kartik Month :

Sun will enter the sign Libra. Kartik Sankranti is also known as Mahodari. Worshiping Lord Kartikeya especially during this month is beneficial. In addition, worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Tulsi. Lighting a lamp at the root of peepal tree and basil plant is considered.

Karwa Chauth, Ahoi Ashtami, Rama Ekadashi, Dhanteras, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, Bhai Dooj and Kartik Purnima will also be celebrated in the month of Kartik. Lighting lamps at pilgrimages in the month of Kartik is considered highly auspicious.


Karwa Chauth

Karwa Chauth will be celebrated on the fourth day of the Krishna Paksha of Kartik in Hindu calendar. On this day, married women keep fast for the longevity and prosperity of their husbands. Then, they worship Lord Ganesha in the evening and eat food after offering water to the Moon. The Puja is done once the Moon appears in the sky.


Ahoi Ashtami

Ahoi Ashtami will be celebrated on the eighth day of the Kartik Krishna Paksha. Celebrated in autumn on Ashtami day of Kartik month, Ahoi is a fast kept by mothers for the well being of their sons. This is mostly celebrated in north India. Prayers are offered to Maa Bhagwati Ashtami by sketching the face of a cub.


Rama Ekadashi

This Ekadashi comes in the Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. It's one of the most auspicious day for worshipping Lord Vishnu and observing a fast. It absolves a person from the greatest of sins and paves the way to the spiritual abode.


Dhan Trayodashi or Dhanteras

Dhan Trayodashi will be held on the thirteenth day of Kartik Krishna Paksha, donating medicines and purchasing new utensils is considered auspicious. The festival of Diwali will be celebrated two days following that. People chant Mantras, perform Yajna and worship the Goddess Lakshmi. Traditionally, Lord Dhanvahtri, the originator of Ayurveda and physician of God was worshipped on Dhantrayodashi for good health and well being.


Diwali

Diwali is a festival of lights. It falls on Kartik Amavasya, the darkest night. It is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu to Ayodhya after being on exile for fourteen years. The night is lit up by diyas and lamps all over. On this night Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped in every home. Everyone seeks her blessings and pray to be bestowed with all wealth and food for the family. People distribute sweets and exchange gifts. Firecrackers are lit to mark the day.


Govardhan Puja

Govardhan Puja is celebrated on the day following Diwali. This is done to worship Govardhan Parvat. Lord Krishna encouraged people of Gokul to worship Govardhan so that they are set free from Lord Indra’s wrath.


Bhai Dooj 2019

Bhai Dooj is a Hindu festival celebrated by all women by praying for the long life of their brothers. In return the brother bestow their sisters with gifts. It falls on the second day of Kartik Shukla Paksha.


Chhath Puja

This puja is celebrated on the 6th day of Kartik Shukla Paksha. It is celebrated for four days as follows:

  • First day: Nahaye Khaye (take a bath and prepare for fast)

  • Second day: Kharna (observe the fast)

  • Third day: Sandhya Arghya (Arghya is offered to Sun Lord in the evening)

  • Fourth day: Usha Arghya (Sun Lord is worshipped early morning)
This is a four day Hindu Festival celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Nepal. But Nowadays it is being celebrated all over India. It is one of the most ancient Hindu festivals during which devotees worship Lord Sun and his wife Usha who is popularly addressed as Chhathi Mayya. It is celebrated on the sixth day of the Kartik month. Devotees observe a simple life in this period filled with purity. They sleep on the floor with one blanket.


Devuthhana Ekadashi

Probodhini Ekadasi or Dev Utthani is celebrated on the eleventh day of Kartik Shukla Paksha. This is celebrated by observing fast and seeking blessings of Lord Vishnu to get rid of all sins committed and seek forgiveness from the Lord. Prana is done on Dwadashi in Pratakaal.


Tulsi Vivah

The Tulsi Vivah is celebrated on Dwadashi of Kartik Shukla Paksha. Tulsi Vivah is an important ritual performed in Kartik month in the traditional Hindu calendar. Tulsi Vivah is the marriage of Tulsi plant with Lord Vishnu. Legend has it that a king named Jalandhar got a boon to remain immortal as long as his wife Varinda is chaste. This made the king got arrogant and one day he declared war on the Devas. He started tormenting innocent people.

To end this Lord Vishnu went to Varinda in the guise of Jalandhar, Varinda assumed Lord Vishnu to be her husband. Consequently Jalandhar was killed in a war. When the truth was revealed to Varinda, she cursed Lord Vishnu and turned him into a Shaligram. Varinda was turned into a tulsi plant. She was given a boon that she will find a place in every household. She will be considered pious and worshipped by one and all.


Kartik Poornima

Kartik Poornima is a cultural festival which is celebrated on the fifteenth full Moon night. It is also called Tripurarai Purnima and festival of lights Dev Deepawali. Tripurari is an epithet of Lord Shiva. It marks the victory of Lord Shiva on Tripurari demon. It is considered as one of the best days to please Lord Shiva.

Guru Nanak Devji was born on this day, hence it is a special day for Sikhs. Kartik Purnima is also a very special day for Jains as they visit religious places and worship Lord Mahavira.

Kartik Purnima is a day to get liberation and get freedom from sins by observing fast and seeking blessings of God. Donations are done on this pious day. People take a holy dip in rivers or scared ponds at sunrise and follow customs and traditions to worship God.
