    Somvar Vrat Katha

Once upon a time, Shri Bhoothnath Mahadev decided to visit the Mrityu Log with Mother Parvati, so they went to Amravati, a city of Vidarbha, a prosperous city with a happy population. They started residing in a comfortable Shiv Mandir which was built by the people of the city. Once while playing Chaucer Goddess asked the priest of the temple, ‘Who you think will win this turn?’ To which he replied Lord Shiva. But instead, Goddess Parvati won. This angered Goddess Parvati and she cursed the Brahmin with Leprosy disease for lying.

After a few days, Apsaras from Swarglok visited the temple. When they saw the cursed priest suffering from leprosy they got curious. They inquired about the disease. The priest narrated the entire story. As a solution, the Apsaras asked the priest to observe Solah Somvar Vrats. They told him the importance of the Vrat and the procedure for the Vrat. The priest observed the Vrat and as expected Lord Shiva was obligated to fulfill all his wishes. Then the Apsaras returned to Swarglok. After completion of the fast, the priest was cured of his disease.

Later on, when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati visited the temple, Goddess Parvati was surprised to see that the priest was cured. She asked the priest the reason behind the same. The priest told her the whole Katha. On seeing the positive impact of the fast, Parvati ji followed the same fast to get back her deceived son Kartikeya, and her wish was fulfilled. Her wrathful son Karthikeya became obedient. This set out a ripple effect. Kartikeya inquired about the reason behind the change in his mindset.

On realizing the importance of the fast, Kartikeya too observed the fast. Kartikeya’s desire to meet his old friend was fulfilled. Due to the impact of the fast, he got a chance to meet his friend. When his friend, a Bharmin asked him about this, Kartikeya told him about the fast. His friend also observed the same fast with the desire to marry. The Brahmin went for a Swayamvara event of a Rajkumari in another state. The King declares that he will get the princess married to the man on whom she puts a garland. Fortunately for the Brahmin, the princess adorns the Brahmin with a garland.

The king true to his word fulfilled his promise. The Brahmin then told the princess about the Katha. The princess too observed that fast and was blessed with a son. Finally, the prince too observed the same fast and became the heir to the kingdom.

    Somvar Vrat Udayapan

On the day of Somvar Udayapan, the devotee should take a bath and wear clean clothes. Observe a fast that involves eating only once. Wearing white clothes would prove to be more beneficial. Make a Vedi for Puja and decorate it with flowers and banana leaves.

Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Chandrama and the entire Shiv Parivar should be placed on the Vedi. Dhoop and Deepak should be used for Pujan and floral garlands should be offered. Choorma and Panchamrit should be offered as Bhog to the Gods. Offer food to the Brahmin. Donate articles to mark the completion of the fast.

If you prefer a simpler way of conducting the Puja, then visiting a Shiv temple will be ideal. Make a Panchamrit of water, milk, yogurt, Gangajal, honey, and Ghee. Carry out Abhishek of the Shivling at the temple by pouring Panchamrit over it. After that Bilav Patra and Datura should be offered to God. Finally water Abhishek should be done by pouring water over the Shivling Abhishek. Light a lamp and incense sticks. Lord Shiva should be gifted with Janeu and Dhoti whereas Mata Parvati should be adorned with red Chunari and Shringar items. After Mantra and Aarti, food and donation should be offered to one or two Brahmins. With this, the fast can be ended.

Ganesha (Vinayak) Chaturthi : Katha And Puja Vidhi

According to Hindu Panchang, every month is divided into two Pakshas – Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha. That’s why Chaturthi comes in both these Pakshas. Krishna Paksha Chaturthi is known as Sankashti Chaturthi and Shukla Paksha Chaturthi is known as Vinayak Chaturthi. One of the important things related to these dates is that both are known as Ganesha Chaturthi.

Chaturthi Tithi is loved by Lord Ganesha. This Tithi is associated with Lord Ganesha’s birth. Many stories can be found in ancient scriptures concerning Ganesha Chaturthi which shows the glory and intensity of this Tithi. Chaturdashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha every month is celebrated as Vinayak Chaturthi Vrat and the Chaturdashi Tithi of Bhadrapad month is celebrated as Ganesha Chaturthi. As Lord Ganesha was born on this day, it is celebrated with excitement and happiness by one and all.

    Vinayak Chaturthi Katha

Vinayak also means without Nayak. Lord Ganesha was solely created by Goddess Parvati that’s why he is known as Vinayak, one who is born without the participation of a Nayak (male). We can learn about this Katha by reading the ancient scriptures.

According to the story, Goddess Parvati makes Uptan before taking the bath. She applies the Uptan on her body and then removes it to bathe. She creates a child’s statue with the removed Uptan and gives life to it. Once the statue comes to life, she asks the child to stand at the gate and not allow anyone to come inside until she completes her bath.

After a while, Lord Shiva arrives. The child, however, doesn’t let him inside. Lord Shiva persuades and tries his best to convince the child. In spite of this when the child does not allow Lord Shiva to enter, Lord Shiva loses his temper and cuts off the child’s head as penance.

When Goddess Parvati sees this, she gets very upset. She is overcome by sorrow and anger. She wants the child back and decides to seek vengeance from Lord Shiva for the same. When Lord Shiva learns all the facts, he orders his workers to bring to him the first living creature or the first head they spot.

The workers set out on a hunt. The first living creature they find is an elephant. They get the elephant’s head to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva fixes that head on the body of the child. Once again he gives life to the child. He names the child Vinayak and appoints him as a leader. This is how the child came to be known as Ganesha.

    Importance of Bhadrapad Ganesha Chaturthi

Chaturdashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapad month is known as Vinayak Chaturthi or Ganesh Chaturthi. This Tithi is celebrated for ten days with great pomp and show. Especially in Maharashtra, the grandeur of this festival amazes the whole world. During this festival, the statue of Lord Ganesha is placed at home, Mandir or Pandal. The Janamotsav of Lord Ganesha is celebrated for ten days and it ends on Anant Chaturdashi.

    Pujan Vidhi of Ganesha Chaturthi

In Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesha is treated as Aadi Dev. Any new work is started only after worshipping Lord Ganesha. Worshiping Lord Shri Ganesha especially on Ganesh Chaturthi brings happiness and prosperity. Let’s learn about the Puja Vidhi in detail –

  • On Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha, after waking up and bathing in Brahma Muhurta, Lord Ganesha should be worshipped.
  • After taking the Puja Sankalp, Ghee Deepak should be lit in front of Lord Ganesha.
  • After that Ganesha Parivar should be worshipped.
  • If the idol of Lord Ganesha is available, then it should be given a bath with Panchamrit and then cleaned with water.
  • After this, the idol of Lord Ganesha should be decorated with beautiful clothes. If clothes are not available then a red thread can also be used.
  • Sindoor, Chandan, garland and flowers should be offered to Lord Ganesha’s idol.
  • If an idol is unavailable, then the picture of Lord Ganesha can be used for applying Tilak and garland.
  • Light fragrant incense sticks in front of Shri Ganesh. Lord Ganesha should be offered ladoos, sweets, nuts, fruits, coconut and Dakshina.
  • Ganesha Mantra should be recited and Aarti should be performed. After the completion of the Aarti, offer flowers and Modak as Bhog to the Lord.
  • On completion of the Puja, seek the blessings of the Lord and ask for forgiveness from him.
Distribute the Prasad amongst the family members.
  • Worshipping Lord Ganesha in this manner on Chaturthi eliminates all the troubles and liberates one from all the obstacles that come in life.

Worshiping the child form of Shri Vishnu on the day of Govind Dwadashi blesses one with children.

The festival of Narsingh Dwadashi is also celebrated on the day of Govind Dwadashi. Narsingh Avatar is one of the twelve Avatars of Lord Vishnu. This Avatar is half human and half lion. Lord Shri Vishnu took this Avatar to kill Hiranyakashipu, the king of demons.

According to ancient scriptures, Diti, the wife of Kashyap Rishi gave birth to Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu. Since she was a devil her sons were also devils. To save the earth, from the Devils, Lord Vishnu took the Varaha Avatar and killed Hiranyaksha. Hiranyakashipu decided to avenge his brother’s death. His dislike for Lord Vishnu was so high that he would kill anyone who worshipped Lord Vishnu.

Lord Hiranyakashipu had undergone hard penance and as a reward for the penance, Lord Brahma blessed him with the boon of being invincible. Hiranyakashipu uses this power to conquer the Swarg also. The irony of his life was that his son was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. As a result, Hiranyakashipu disliked his son Prahlada and in fact tried to kill Prahlada several times. However, Lord Vishnu saves Prahlada every time. Once in a packed assembly, Prahlada speaks about Lord Vishnu’s grandeur.

Prahlada describes Lord Vishnu as being omnipresent and his presence in every particle of the universe. This angers Hiranyakashipu and he challenges Prahalada to call for Lord Vishnu from a pillar. Prahlada calls for the Lord with his devotion. Shri Vishnu appears in the incarnation of Lord Narayana in the form of Narasimha and slays Hiranyakashipu. Lord Narasimha gives a boon to Prahlada and all his devotees. He states all the wishes of the devotee who will remember and worship me on this day will be fulfilled.

Hence on the day of Govind Dwadashi, worshipping Lord Narsimha is considered highly beneficial. Worshipping Lord Vishnu and performing Puja and Jagran brings happiness and protects the devotee from all the sufferings and diseases of life.

    Jaya Ekadashi 2024

Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Magh month is known as Jaya Ekadashi. Lord Vishnu is worshipped on this day. Ekadashi Tithi is dear to Lord Vishnu. By observing this fast and performing Puja on this day, the devotee gets the blessings of Lord Vishnu. Jaya Ekadashi will be celebrated on 20 February 2024, Tuesday.

    Magh, Shukla Jaya Ekadashi
Jaya Ekadashi starts – 08:49 AM, 19 February
Jaya Ekadashi ends – 09:55 AM, 20 February

Ekadashi is an extremely important day among Hindus. Fasting on this day is considered very virtuous. Narada Purana explains Ekadashi Tithi as the one which helps in absolving a person from all sins. It is one of the simplest means of attaining the blessings of Lord Shri Vishnu.

    Jaya Ekadashi Katha

Listening and reading to Jaya Ekadashi Katha is considered highly effective. Half the battle is won just by listening to the Katha mentioned in Padma Purana. So let us learn more about the importance of Jaya Ekadashi Katha.

Yudhishtir requests God Madhusudan (Shri Krishna) to recite the Jaya Ekadashi Vrat story so that he can understand it’s glory and benefit from the same. Yudhishtir wanted to know the alternate name for Magha Shukla Paksha Ekadashi and the procedure for observing the fast. Lord Krishna then narrates the Katha to Yudhishtir.

Yudhishtir says “You are omnipresent. There is no beginning and end, you are the basis of all the creatures. You are the one who produces, abides and destroys the creatures, and frees them from the bondage of the world. So, kindly oblige us by telling us the Ekadashi Katha. We are eager to listen to this story.”

Following Yudhishtir’s kind words, Lord Krishna shares his knowledge on the importance of this Katha. Lord Krishna says, ‘Hey Kunti Putra, Shukla Paksha Ekadasi of Magha month is known as Jaya Ekadashi. Just like its name, a devotee will be victorious in all his/her projects and will have accomplishments.

By observing this fast, the devotee gets freedom from Brahma Hatya. One is absolved of all his/her sins and attains salvation. The devotee is also cured of all diseases. When one observes the Jaya Ekadashi correctly, the devotee becomes capable of attaining not only my blessings but also that of Paramdham.’

The following is the Jaya Ekadashi Katha – Once upon a time, Devraj Indra was strolling with Apsaras and Gandharvas in the Nandanvan. There, Pushpavati, a Gandharva Kanya and Malyavan, a Gandharva boy fell in love with each other. As a result, they lose focus and are not able to pay attention to their singing.

Lord Indra’s meditation gets hampered due to the couple’s poor singing. This angers Lord Indra and he curses them. As per the curse, Pushpavati and Malyavan shall turn into monsters after death. This upsets both of them and they start living in the Himalayas. Their lives become difficult. They become distant from everything and their five senses stop working. They become completely unaware of their surroundings.

Unhappy with their sufferings, they start spending every moment of their life searching for Moksha. Incidentally, on Jaya Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Magha month, both of them didn’t get food the whole day. They spent the whole day without food. Due to hunger, they were not able to sleep too. Inadvertently they observed the Jaya Ekadashi fast which involves fasting and Jagran at night. As a result they were freed from Lord Indra’s curse.

Thus Shri Krishna concludes the story. He tells Yudhishtir that anyone who observes the Jaya Ekadashi story, listens to its story will benefit. All his/her sins will be destroyed. It is believed that ghosts, demons etc are also driven away. Worship, charity, sacrifice and chanting play a very important role in this fast. Therefore, those who observe Jaya Ekadashi fast attain salvation.

    Vrat Vidhi of Jaya Ekadashi

    • The devotee should start observing all the rules of the fast from the Dashami Tithi.
    • The devotee should follow Brahmacharya and should discard vindictive objects.
    • On Ekadashi Tithi the devotee should take a bath, then worship Lord Vishnu with flowers, Dhoop etc.
    • Lord Vishnu should be worshipped with a pure heart on this day.
    • Fast should be observed the whole day and if staying hungry is not possible, then the devotee can eat only fruits.
    • ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya’, this Dwadash Mantra should be recited.
    • Different names of Lord Vishnu should be recited.
    • Donation should be done as per capability.

Similarly, Jagran should be organised during the night, while observing the fast. On the following day i.e. on Dwadashi Tithi, the devotee can consume food only after serving to a Bharhman. This will mark the completion of the fast.
