Stories related to the birth of Lord Buddha

Buddha birth story

Gautum Buddha was believed to be born in 563 B.C. Buddha also Siddhartha was a preacher of Buddha Religion. He popularised it far and wide. Buddha was born in Lumbini in the Ishwaku Vansh Kul King Sudhoshan’s house. His mother’s name was Mahamaya. Buddha’s mother expired seven days after his birth. After that, he was brought up by Mahaprajapati Gautami.

Buddha’s birth name was Siddhartha but once he attained spiritual knowledge he came to be known as Buddha. After Sadhna he started living at Bodh Gaya which is a town in Bihar. He received divine knowledge here under a Bodhi Tree. This is how his name changed from Siddharth Gautam to Lord Buddha.

Since Lord Buddha was born under the Gautum Nakshatra, he was also called Gautum. It is said that a Rishi had predicted that this child i.e. Lord Buddha will either become a big king or a big sage who will do the welfare of all the people around the world and will guide everybody. This prediction was further confirmed by other Jyotish Scholars. This led to fear in King Shushodhan and he restricted Siddhartha’s movements within the four walls of the palace.

Buddha Initial Life

Siddhartha Gautam completed his early education. He got the knowledge of Vedas and Upanishads, he also received education in royalty and warfare. Siddhartha was married to Yashodhara. Siddhartha was provided all kinds of happiness facilities by his father Shudoshan. The King made sure that Siddhartha and his wife were kept away from sorrows and miseries in all forms. Siddhartha stayed with his wife Yashodhara in a palace full of splendor and all pleasures. Eventually, they were blessed with a son whom they named Rahul.

In spite of all of this, Siddhartha used to feel restless at his heart and soul. Compassion and empathy were very deeply rooted in him. He had the same emotion for everybody, be it a senior person or a servant. He used to always wonder about the purpose of his life.

The journey of becoming Buddha from Siddhartha

Siddhartha’s journey on becoming Buddha passed through many stages. During the early period of his life, his father Shudhoshan tried to save Siddhartha from all negative things that could disturb Siddhartha’s mind.

All possible luxuries in life were made available to Siddhartha. So much so that the facilities in the palace would be changed as per changing seasons. Maids and maidservants were always available for the prince at his beck and call. So on one side, Lumbini was filled with beauty and splendour. Pain and misery in any form could not touch the palace. Issues such as old age, diseases and death were never heard of.

Siddhartha’s mind would keep distracted and he would not be able to focus. It is believed that one day he got so restless that he got onto his chariot and went on a round beyond the boundaries of the palace. On his way, he saw an old man. When he asks his charioteer to inquire above the old man he realises that everyone gets old one day.

As he moves ahead, he sees a diseased man. At that time the charioteer tells him that a person may suffer from diseases because of one or the other reason. As they move further ahead, they see people carrying a dead body, and a lot of them are crying. When Siddhartha questions the charioteer, the charioteer informs Siddhartha about death. He tells Siddhartha that everyone dies. Finally, they see a sage. The sage free from all material pleasures is the only one who appears happy.

Siddhartha’s perception of the world and life changes completely after all that he sees. At that moment a feeling of Vairagya takes birth in his mind. In order to understand the real meaning of life and the mysteries of nature, he decides to become a saint.

He leaves behind his wife, small child, all the material pleasure of the palace and sets out on his quest for the right direction in life. Siddhartha follows deep penance and stays without food. His first preacher in Sanyas was Alar Kalam.

Siddhartha was following deep penance meditating under a tree on the banks of Niranjan river. He has weakened because of the penance. He breaks his fast when a girl by the name Sujata offers him Kheer. The girl then says just like my wish is fulfilled by you eating the kheer, your wish will also be fulfilled. That night Buddha finds answers to all his questions. From that day onwards Siddhartha came to be known as Buddha.

This form of Lord Buddha indicates that renunciation and elimination of desires leads one to the path of salvation.

Why is Ashoka Ashtami Puja observed?

In India, several festivals are celebrated as a gratitude to the beautiful nature around us. In the scriptures, God is present in every single thing in the world, along these lines worshipping trees is considered equivalent to worshipping God. Our culture involves a celebration of nature in all its festivals.

Every tree has its importance, along with being our lifesavers, they also increase wealth. Ashoka tree too is a giver of happiness and peace in our life. The festival Ashoka Ashtami recognises the positivity nature brings to our lives.

According to facts and beliefs, it is believed that the Ashoka tree originated from Lord Shiva. Worshipping this tree brings blessings of Lord Shiva. In order to obtain desired goals or fulfillment of wishes, one must offer milk to the roots of the Ashoka tree and wrap Soot around it. Worshipping Ashoka trees holds importance both religiously and scientifically.

Ashoka Ashtami Katha

The significance of Ashoka trees is depicted very well in our ancient scriptures. Ramayana, for instance, has a very important mention of the Ashoka tree. When Sita is captured by Ravan, she spends a good amount of time under an Ashoka tree. When Hanuman goes to Lanka he sees her below the Ashoka tree. He quietly sits on the Ashoka tree and calls out to Sita. He informs Sita that Ram has called for her. As a proof, he also shows her Ram’s ring. Sita is delighted and agrees to go with Hanuman. The Ashoka tree blesses Sita and frees her.

There is another mythological story that speaks about the origin of the Ashoka tree. As per this story just like Rudraksha, the Ashoka tree too originated from Lord Shiva’s tears. The tears from one eye got converted to Rudraksha and the other eye got converted to Ashoka tree. As per scriptures, the story goes like this:

One day Ravana decides to appease Lord Shiva by singing the Shiva Tandava. Lord Shiva naturally performs Tandava. This leads to fear among all the Devas. They worry that the Tandava will lead to Pralay. They then approach Lord Vishnu for protection from any mishappening. Lord Shiva is helpless and as he performs his Tandava, two tears roll down his eyes. This leads to the birth of Ashoka Tree.

    “अशोककलिका ह्यष्टौ ये पिबन्ति पुनर्वसौ ।

    चैत्रे मासि सिताष्टम्यां न ते शोकमवाप्नुयुः ॥ “

Ashoka tree is described very beautifully in the Garuda Purana. It means if on the day of Ashtami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Chaitra month is also combined by the Punarvasu Nakshatra then observing fast on this day is considered highly beneficial.

It is believed that fasting on this day and consuming eight buds of the Ashoka tree on this day liberates a person from all his/her griefs. he following Mantra should be recited while consuming the buds –

    “त्वामशोक हराभीष्ट मधुमाससमुद्भव ।

    पिबामि शोकसन्तप्तो मामशोकं सदा कुरु ।।”

Use of Ashoka tree in Vastu Shastra

The Ashoka tree is believed to bring in auspiciousness and positive energy. If this tree is planted in the north direction of the house, then it removes the negativity of the house. If a house is afflicted by Vastu Dosha, then that too can be nullified by planting the Ashoka tree. Some of its advantages are:

  • Planting Ashoka trees in the house brings happiness and prosperity.
  • The fear of premature death also ends by having the Ashoka tree at home.
  • Women who sit under an Ashoka tree get physical and mental strength.
  • Marital life also improves by worshipping the Ashoka tree.

To conclude Ashoka Ashtami is important not only to enhance the spiritual side of human beings but it is also able to influence human life in its entire form. A feeling of respect towards any tree is equivalent to respecting nature itself.

Nature can give us life. We should maintain our devotion towards it. This then helps in paving the way for progress and peace for human life. When we respect nature we set an example for our future generations. They learn to respect the relationship between nature and human life. This, in turn, creates a positive and sustainable environment for human beings.

The Katha of Matsya Jayanti is as follows – Satyavrat Manu was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. One day Satyavrat Manu goes to the river to worship and performs Tarpan to the Lord. There, a small fish falls in his Kamandal. Satyavrat Manu, being a pious, compassionate and benevolent King, takes the fish to his house, but the fish grows very large. It becomes difficult to keep her in the house. So, Satyavrat transfers her to a pond. As soon as the fish is transferred into the pond, it enlarges so much that it does not fit in that pond. Then king Manu takes the fish out of the pond and transfers it into the river, but again the fish enlarges and becomes larger than the river. Finally, Manu transfers that fish into the sea, yet again the fish becomes larger than the sea.

Manu is surprised to see this form of the fish. He realises that it is not an ordinary fish. He bows to the fish, joins hands and asks the fish to reveal the secret behind all this. Lord Vishnu emerges from the fish and tells him that after seven days there will be Pralay on the Earth. As a result, the earth will submerge in water. Hence he has taken the Avatar of a fish. He then appoints King Manu to follow his instructions to save the world.

Shri Vishnu asks Manu to build a big boat. He asks Manu to then collect all the essential items and keep the same in the boat. He then tells Manu to call the Saptarishi and all other living beings to the boat. In this way, the world can be rebuilt even after the Pralay. Manu follows all the instructions given by the Lord. Exactly after seven days, Pralay occurs. Lord Vishnu once again comes in the Avatar of a fish and asks Satyavrat to tie the boat to the fish. Lord Vishnu stays in the water in Matsya Avatar till the Pralay ends. As the boat is attached to the fish everyone is saved.

Lord Vishnu keeps all the four Vedas with him and gives them to Lord Brahma for rebuilding the world. In this way, God takes the Avatar of Matsya and saves the earth and ensures the welfare of all living beings.

It is believed that the day on which the Yagya was stopped was Panchami Tithi. For this reason, this Tithi is celebrated as Nag Panchami. Similarly, many other stories show the importance of Nag Panchami in different ways.

Why are snakes important in Hindu mythology?

The importance of snakes is mentioned in detail in our Puranas. Snakes are believed to be the children of Kashyapa Rishi. According to this, Brahma ji’s son Rishi Kashyap had four wives. The snakes were brought to life by one of the wives named Kurdu. The names of the snakes are Ananta, Vasuki, Takshak, Karkotak, Padma, Mahapadam, Shankhpal and Kulik. If Kaal Sarp Dosh is formed in someone’s birth chart, then it is a result of the influence of these eight snakes.

Perform Kala Sarpa Dosha Shanti Puja in Nag Panchami

The formation of Kalsarp Yoga in the horoscope creates many obstacles in life. Efforts fail repeatedly for one or the other reason. Lack of family happiness also remains constant in life. Nag Panchami is the most important time to resolve this Dosha.

Kaal Sarp Dosh is a malefic Yoga. It is formed in a person’s horoscope when the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars, Guru, Venus and Saturn all are placed between Rahu and Ketu. Other Sarpa Dosha are also formed by Rahu and Ketu.

Lord Shiva is worshipped along with snakes in the Shiva temple for Kal Sarpa Shanti. Rudrabhishek and Mahamrityunjaya Mantra should be recited. Milk should be offered to Lord Shiva and Nag Dev.

The best day to calm Kalsarp Yoga is Nag Panchami. If Nagas are worshiped on this day as per rituals then the malefic effects of Kaal Sarp Dosha are minimised.

The story behind Lord Skanda is as follows:- Tarkasur, a devil was blessed with a boon that nobody can kill him, only the son of Lord Shiva can kill him. Taking advantage of this boon, he started torturing everyone. Tarakasura’s power keeps growing. He decides to use his power to defeat all Devtas and take the place of Indra. When the Devtas come to know of Tarkasura’s plan, they seek protection from Tridev.

Lord Vishnu assures them of help. He gets God Shiva married to Goddess Parvati. Both of them use their energy and create a Punj. This Punj is taken away by Agnidev, but he was not able to tolerate the heat and throws it in the Ganga. The Ganga too is not able to tolerate its heat. She takes the Punj and places it in the Shravan Van. This leads to the birth of a very beautiful child from that Punj. Six Kritikas spot that child and adopt him. The child is thus named Kartikeya.

Kartikeya is made the commander of Gods. He then attacks Tarkasur and defeats him. The death of Tarkasura brings peace again. The Devtas are relieved too.
