Why is Bhishma Ashtami celebrated & what is its importance? 2023

Bhishma Ashtami is celebrated on the Shukla Paksha Ashtami of Magha month. This year, Bhishma Ashtami will be celebrated on 28 January 2023, Saturday. This fast is observed for the love of Bhishma Pitamah. On this day, Bhishma Parva of Mahabharat is studied and Lord Krishna is worshipped. According to ancient stories, Bhishma Pitamah sacrificed his body on this day. Hence, this day is also celebrated as his Nirvana day.

    Bhishma Ashtami Katha

In the Katha of Bhishma Ashtami, the period of Mahabharata only prevails, in which the war of Mahabharata & the life of Bhishma Pitamah has been explained. According to Mahabharat, the real name of Bhishma Pitamah is Dev Vrat. He was the son of Shantanu, the king of Hastinapur & his mother was Ganga.

Being tied up in his promise in the war of Mahabharata, Bhishma Pitamah had to fight against the Pandavas against his will. No warrior could defeat Bhishma Pitamah in this battle. Due to this, Lord Krishna advises Pandava to make Shikhandi fight against Bhishma Pitamah. Pitamah could not use any weapon against Shikhandi, because Shikhandi has the qualities of both man & woman and Bhishma Pitamah was committed to not use any weapon on a woman.

Due to this Pandavas made Shikhandi stand in front of Bhishma Pitamah, due to which he couldn’t use any weapon and because of his commitment he got injured with the arrows of Pandavas and slept on ‘Baan Shaiya’. He slept on the Shaiya for 18 days, but he didn’t give up his body as he was waiting for the Uttarayan. As soon as the Sun turned Uttarayan, he sacrificed his body. Even in many adverse circumstances of life, Bhishma Pitamah kept his vow. Because of keeping his every promise, he was called Bhishma from Devavrata.

    Jeevan Gatha of Bhishma Pitamah

The birth name of Bhishma was Devavrata. According to his story, Shantanu, his father was the king of Hastinapur. Once upon a time, the king visited the banks of river Ganga where he met a beautiful lady. He got attracted to her beauty and asked for her introduction and proposed to marry her.

That lady told her name as Ganga, and accepted his marriage proposal but on one condition, that he will not stop her from doing any work and ask her any questions. King Shantanu accepts her condition and gets married to each other.

Ganga gave birth to a son, but after giving birth she flows that son in the river. Due to his promise, Shantanu doesn’t ask her any questions. Similarly, after suffering the separation of his seven sons, when Ganga tries to throw away her eighth son also, then Shantanu stops her from flowing their son, by breaking his promise.

Ganga takes her son away since the king broke his promise. After a very long time, Shantanu visits the river Ganga & asks her to meet their son. By listening to him, Ganga gives away her son to him. King Shantanu, after finding his son Devavrata, goes to Hastinapur with a pleased mind and declares Devavrata as the prince.

Story of becoming Bhishma from Devavrat

Once king Shantanu met Matsyagandha, who was the daughter of Haridas Kevat. Shantanu wishes to marry Matsyagandha. For this, he visits her father Haridas.

But Haridas doesn’t agree with this marriage. He did so, because he was afraid that the child of Matsyagandha will not be crowned as prince since, the eldest son of Shantanu ie. Devavrat and his eldest son will only be given this privilege.

Haridas puts a condition in front of him under which only the children of Matsyagandha will be crowned as his heirs and not Devavrat. But king Shantanu disagrees with this. And he is also not able to forget Matsyagandha and becomes upset due to separation from her. When Devavrat learns about his father’s condition then he pledges to stay unmarried for his whole life. It is due to this harsh and Bhishma word that Devavrata receives the name Bhishma.

By seeing his love and sacrifice for his father, king Shantanu blesses him with ‘Iccha Mrityu’ and says that death will only come when you will want.

    Puja Vidhi of Bhishma Ashtami

    • On Bhishma Ashtami, after completing daily chores, the devotee should take a bath and worship Lord Vishnu.
    • Surya Deva should be worshipped.
    • Sesame, water & Kusha should be offered to Bhishma Pitamah. If Tarpan is not possible on your own, then get it done by a Brahmin.
    • Food should be offered to the Brahmins & Dakshina should be given according to one’s capability.
    • On this day, the Tarpan of the ancestors should also be done.

On this day Bhishma Ashtami Katha should be read. It is believed that by doing Puja on this day, all the problems of the devotee can be solved and he gets the blessings of his ancestors. From this puja, a person gets relieved from Pitra Dosha.

According To Astrology What Is Kharmas

    What is Kharmas?

Kharmas in not considered auspicious for any form of auspicious tasks, especially marriage. For this reason, it is believed that marriage should be avoided in this period. Let us understand what is the month of Khar. The period of Sun’s transit in Sagittarius is called Kharmas or Khar month. The beginning of Khar month starts from the middle of December and lasts till the middle of January.

During this period of Sankranti the element of fire is at its peak. This time is useful for activities that involve debates. Changes are also seen in the climate, nature and behavior of human beings in this phase.

    Surya Sankranti

The Sun transits the zodiac every month. The period of Sun’s transit from one zodiac to another is called Surya Sankranti. When the Sun enters Sagittarius from Scorpio, the period of transit is called Dhanu Sankranti. Dhanu Sankranti is also called Kharmas Sankranti.

    Importance of Kharmas

Sun and Sagittarius both are fire elements. Sun’s transit in Sagittarius leads to the combination of two fiery elements. This leads to an increase in fire element all over. Sagittarius is the core sign of planet Jupiter and when Sun coincides with this sign, its effect is seen on everyone.

    Mythological Legends

There is also a mythological opinion in context with Kharmas. According to one story, when the Sun God was riding on his chariot revolving the universe, the chariot horses got distraught with thirst. The Sun God was sad to see the condition of the horses. However, he was helpless as the chariot could not be stopped.

Along the way, they see a pond of water near which two Khars i.e. donkeys were standing. The Sun God finds a way to relieve his horses. He unstraps his horses and straps the two donkeys to his chariot. The donkeys then complete the next round of the universe. When the Sun God reaches the same spot again the Sun God straps his horses back and relieves the donkeys. The horses were able to quench their thirst. For this reason, this month was named Khar Maas.

In this way, Khars travel throughout the month of Pausha at their slow pace and the Sun’s intensity becomes very weak in this month, the effect of the Sun in the northern hemisphere of the earth is weakened during the whole month of Pausha.

    Astrological Reason

Malamas also occurs due to Sagittarius Sankranti of Sun. The presence of Sun in Sagittarius and Pisces signs are not considered auspicious for the Sun. The main reason for this is that the Sun is in a weak state in the zodiac signs of Jupiter. Twice a year, the Sun transits in the zodiac signs of Jupiter. First is the Dhanu Sankranti from 16 December to 15 January and the second in the Pisces Sankranti from 14 March to 13 April. Marriage, Yagyopaveet, ear piercing, housewarming, Vastu are some activities which are not done during these months. Devotionals songs are sung in this period.

Tasks that are prohibited in Khar month

  • Khar month is not considered auspicious time according to astrological calculations. There is an excess of anger and rage in Khar month and during this time, mental restlessness is also seen with contradictions and ideological differences.
  • It is forbidden to do some auspicious works at this time. It is advisable to not get married in Kharmas. At this time, there can be a lack of sweetness and happiness in the marriage due to some or the other reason.
  • Buying any house, purchasing any property etc. during this Khar month is not considered auspicious. One should also not buy a new vehicle during this month. If any vehicle etc. is purchased at this time, then problems related to the vehicle can cause stress.
  • Work to be done in Khar month

  • Sun God transit in Jupiter’s sign makes it ideal to worship Lord Sun in this period. At this time it is considered best to do chant Mantras and perform various rituals.
  • Performing Shradh for fathers and forefathers during this time is also considered favorable.
  • Donation is said to be auspicious in this month. Especially donation of water is considered very important during Khar month.
  • Bathing in holy rivers also holds great importance. Bathing during Brahma Muhurta is considered to be very useful for the body.

What is Tithi Vridhi and Tithi Kshaya?

Tithi is an important part of panchang. Fasts and festivals are organized according to Tithi. Sometimes, we see that a festival is being celebrated on 2 days. The main reason behind this is the increase or decrease in a Tithi.

Tithi is determined with Sunrise. If there are three dates between one Sunrise and another, then out of them one date becomes kshayi or decreases. Similarly, if one date continues till two Sunrise, then that date is called ‘Vridhi’ or increasing.

These dates have a special effect on the life of the person along with every fasts and festivals. In every month, first 15 dates are called as krishna paksha and last 15 dates are called as shukla paksha. The 15th (30) date of krishna paksha is known as amavasya. On the 15th date of shukla paksha, Moon is completely visible, that’s why this date is called as Poornima. The Moon and Sun are on the same Bhogansh during Amavasya.

Why does a date increase or decrease?

Date is determined with the speed of the Sun and the Moon. In jyotish shastra, ‘Tithi Vridhi’ and ‘Tithi kshayi’ has been explained. When Sun and Moon are present together in the same ansh, then that time is called as ‘Amavasya’ and when Moon moves 12 degrees ahead of Sun then a Tithi is formed and Pratipada, Dwitiya and other dates are formed.

There is a lot of difference in the motion of the Sun and the Moon. On one hand, the Sun completes one zodiac sign in 30 days, on the other hand the Moon takes 2 and a half days to complete that. When this difference starts arising between Moon and Sun, Pratipada begins, and when this difference ends at 12 degrees, Pratipada also ends and with that Dwitiya Tithi starts.

The Vridhi and kshayi of a Tithi is mainly because of the motion of Moon. This motion of Moon keeps on increasing and decreasing. Sometimes, when Moon is at a higher speed then it can cover the distance of 12 degrees quickly and can sometimes take more time due to low speed.

How to determine ‘Tithi Vridhi’ & ‘Tithi Kshaya’?

Normally, the Bhoga Kaal of a Tithi is of 60 hours. The Vridhi and Kshayi of a Tithi is determined on the basis of sunrise. If a Tithi is beginning before sunrise, and remains till next sunrise then this situation is called as ‘Tithi Vridhi’.

For example – If on a Sunday, the time of sunrise is 06:32 am, and on that day Panchami Tithi begins at 06:15 am before sunrise, and continues till 07:53 am on Monday, the sunrise on Monday scheduled at 06:31 am and Shashthi Tithi begins after that. Thus, on both Sunday and Monday during sunrise panchami Tithi is is considered as ‘Tithi Vridhi’. The total duration of Panchami Tithi is 25h 36m, which is on an average more than 60 Ghati or 24 hours. Due to this reason the Tithi increases.

Opposite to this situation, when a Tithi starts after sunrise and ends after sunrise on the next day then this is known as ‘Kshaya’ or decrease, which we call as ‘Tithi Kshaya’. Example of ‘Tithi Kshaya’ – If on Friday sunrises at 07:12, and Ekadashi Tithi ends at 07:36 after sunrise the next day ushering in the Dwadashi Tithi. Now this Dwadashi Tithi will remain only for 30:26 minutes ie. till 06:26 am, and after that ‘Trayodashi Tithi’ starts. If sunrise takes place at 07:13, then it means that no sunrise has taken place in ‘Dwadashi Tithi’. As a result it was ‘Ekadashi Tithi’ during the time of sunrise on Friday it and on Saturday during sunrise it was ‘Trayodashi Tithi’, due to this ‘Dwadashi Tithi’ was compromised leading to its Kshaya.

    Main Names of Tithis

Every Tithi is known by a different name. They also have effects based on these names. These are the names of Tithis – Nanda, Bhadra, Jaya, Rikta and Poorna. 1-6-11 is known as Nanda Tithi, this Tithi depicts happiness. 2-7-12 is known as Bhadra Tithi, which reflects growth. 3-8-13 is known as Jaya Tithi, which depicts victory. 4-9-14 is known as Rikta Tithi, which is not considered favourable. 5-10-15 comes under Poorna Tithi, which depicts auspiciousness.
