Phalguna Amavasya 2024 Date, Time And Pooja Vidhi

Falgun/Phalguna Amavasya is celebrated on the 30th tithi of Phalgun month. On this day, bathing in river Ganga and other holy rivers holds great importance. Devotees perform Puja on this day. Tarpan to forefathers and donations are also done on this day.

According to Hindu Panchang, Falgun (Phalguna) month is the last month, that’s why chanting Mantras and penance in this month is critical.

This year, Falgun Amavasya will be celebrated on March  10, 2024. Those who wish to can also fast on this day. This will increase the good Karma of a person leading to an increase in auspiciousness in life.

Lord Shiva should be worshipped on Falgun Amavasya. Worshipping Lord Shiva is considered effective in preventing untimely death, fear, suffering, and disease. It helps one in getting rid of difficulties and complications of life. In Hindu scriptures, this fast is called Ashwath Pradakshina Vrat. On this day the Peepal tree should be worshipped. Shani Dev should also be worshipped.

Peepal Puja on Falgun Amavasya

Worshipping Peepal trees on Phalguna Amavasya is considered highly beneficial. It is believed that Tridevas reside in the Peepal tree. Water and milk should be offered at the roots and then Puja should be done by using flowers, Akshat, Chandan, etc. 108 Parikramas of the Peepal Tree should be done by using a thread. A Dipak should be lit under the Peepal tree.

After that donating according to one’s capabilities is also considered auspicious. By following these rules the inauspicious effects of Pitra Dosha, Griha Dosha, and Shani Dosha are taken care of and peace prevails in the family.

Falgun Amavasya of Snan Daan

Bathing and practising charity on Falgun Amavasya holds great importance. Observing silence on this day is also considered very beneficial. According to Dev Rishi Vyas, observing silence, meditation and bathing, when all of this is done together it is considered equivalent to Sahastra Gow Daan. Diving in holy waters, especially at the Brahma Sarovar of Kurukshetra is considered very auspicious. It is also believed supporting charity at this place, in particular, brings limitless benefits.

On this day, people from the entire country gather near holy rivers to bathe. Devotees also apply Tilak on their forehead. By doing this, all the wishes of the devotee are fulfilled. Women who observe the Somvati Amavasya fast should also listen to its Katha.

As per scriptures, Bhishma explained the importance of this day to Yudhishtir. Bhishma said ‘The person who takes bath in the holy river on this day gets relief from all sorrows.’ It is also believed that by bathing on this day the souls of forefathers get peace and the native gets their blessings.

Falgun Amavasya Puja

  • Ganga Snan should be done on the day of Amavasya. If it is not possible, then the native can add 2-3 drops of Gangajal to the bathing water.
  • After the bath, Arghya should be offered to Surya Dev and Surya Mantra should be recited.
  • Following that Lord Ganesha should be worshipped.
  • Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva should be worshipped.
  • Vrat Sankalp should be taken if the devotee wants to observe the fast and if not then normal Puja can be done.
  • Yellow flowers should be offered to Lord Vishnu.
  • Kesar, Chandan, etc. should be applied to the Gods.
  • Ghee Deepak should be lit.
  • Itra and Tilak should be applied.
  • After that Dhoop and Diya should be lit and Aarti should be performed.
  • Parikrama should be done and then Naivedya should be offered.
  • Charnamrit should be offered as Prasad and Ladoo or Jaggery should be offered as Bhog.
  • Remember your ancestors and distribute eatables and fruits in their name.

Food should be offered to Brahmins and Daan should be given in the name of forefathers. Deepak should be lit in the evening too and Puja too should be performed.

Phalguna Amavasya Mahatmya

Worshipping Lord Vishnu and reciting Bhagavad Katha is considered beneficial on Amavasya Tithi. Daan and good deeds performed on this day give never-ending results. Puja and fasting on this day are considered beneficial for the happiness of family and children. If any family member or any person is suffering from Pitra Dosha or there are chances of this Dosha in someone’s horoscope, then performing a special Puja and observing fast on this day helps in getting relief from this Dosha.
