Rishi Atri - History of Astrology
Rishi Atri is one of the 18 saints in the astrology. It is believed that Rishi Atri was born through Lord Brahma.
Lord Krishna is considered as the descendant of Rishi Atri. After many generations, Lord Shri Krishna was born in the family of Rishi Atri. It is believed that there were 7 Manas sons of Lord Brahma, which are Rishi Pulastya, Rishi Pulah, Rishi Vashishtha, Rishi Kaushik, Rishi Marichi, Rishi Kritu, and Rishi Narad. These great-grandchildren have been an important contributor to the auspiciousness of astrology.
Manas Sons of Brahma
One of the most important saints of Hindu astrology is Rishi Atri, who was a great scholar and poet. Rishi Atri is one of the nine Prajapati and Manas sons of Lord Brahma. Atri is also a Gotra. As a result, those born in this Gotra are considered the descendants of saint Atri.
Rishi Atri is given place in Saptarishis. Ancient texts are filled with his greatness & intellect. Out of all the 10 Mandals of Rig Veda, in the 5th Mandal, there is a Mantra which is ‘Drishta Maharishi Atri', because of this, the Mandal is also called as Aitrya Mandal.
These seven sons of Brahma Ji are present in the sky as a Saptarishi. An old story is very popular in this respect. Constellations are used for the day, date, horoscope, festivals, and Muhurat, etc. All of these have been used in the field of Indian agriculture since ancient times.
Along with being associated with the history of astrology, Rishi Atri is also attached to the Goddess Anusuya and Rayaayana. When Lord Rama and Sita visited Rishi Atri's Ashram to meet them, they were also interviewed by Goddess Anusuya. At that time, Goddess Sita spoke about ‘Patidharam' and gave her clothes as a gift. Apart from this, a lot of things have been mentioned in Mahabharata about Rishi Atri and his Gotra.
Contribution of Rishi Atri in astrology
Rishi Atri has worked in the field of medical astrology. Principles identified by him play an important role in medical astrology even today. Along with he also composed the Atri Sanhita. Moreover Rishi Atri is considered the creator of Mantras and its distinctions. He also composed religious texts with his triennial power, as well as beautiful stories of characters. Rishi Atri is worshipped as the person with high intellect, knowledge, strong meditative powers, proper religious behavioral conduct, committed worshipper of the Lord and a scholar of Mantra Shakti.
Rishi Atri also mentions auspicious methods and Muhurat for worship. The Atreya Mandal of Rig Veda, Kalyan Sukta, Swasti Sukta is considered to be developed by him. Under these, Maharishi Atri described these topics and explained how to worship and celebrate the festivities. The Suktas that were described are being used even today auspicious work and festivities.
Rishi Atri got married to goddess Anusuya. Goddess Anasuya is ranked among the best women who respects her husband. Rishi Atri and Anusuya were bestowed with the Tridev as their children following their Sadhana and penance. They were blessed with God Vishnu as Dattatreya, God Shiva as Durvasa & lord Brahma as Soma.
Contribution in Ayurveda
Ayurveda and ancient medical field will always be grateful to this saint. He created many formulations in Ayurveda. According to Puranas, Rishi Atri is believed to be originated from the eyes of Lord Brahma. Rishi Atri has achieved some important achievements in the medical field.
According to ancient spiritual texts, the Ved of Devas, Ashwini Kumar received a boon from Rishi Atri. There is also a mention of a story in the Rig Veda in detail about this subject. According to the story, once the sage Atri was in a deep state of medication. Having noticed this some demons tried to attack him.
As Rishi Atri was in a meditative state he did not realise the danger. At that time Ashwini Kumar was present at that place and he saved the saint from the demons. Apart from this, there is one more story that says Ashwin Kumar taught Rishi Atri about puberty.
Rishi Atri & his philosophy about life
Many things have been discussed in Atri Samhita which speaks of the social and spiritual upliftment of human beings. The moral duty and description of his rights can also be found in this. In this Samhita, the person is said to be generous, kind, and compassionate towards others. How a person should behave with friends and family, these things also find a mention in the book.
