Kartik Month

Kartik month is the eighth month of the Hindu calendar. The scriptures also say that there is no other month like Kartik. Kartik month starts when the Sun transits in Libra sign. The importance of Kartik month can be found in ‘Skanda Purana’, ‘Padma Purana’ and ‘Bhagvat’. In this month Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva is worshipped.

Natives born in the Kartik month

Natives born in the Kartik month are wealthy. They prefer tasks that require mobility rather than being in one place. They may not behave well with others. They will benefit from buying and selling. Along with this Diwali is celebrated on the Amavasya of Kartik month, which depicts how we can fill the darkness in life with light. This festival teaches us how to live on hope when we are surrounded by despair.

In the same way, the festival of Bhaiya Dooj brings purity and strength in relations. It also depicts the importance of love and companionship. Our love for our brothers and sisters should flow naturally without expecting anything in return.

Karva Chauth fast is observed by married ladies. This fast shows the way of leading an ideal married life. It rejuvenates the happiness and vows between the life partners. This festival marks the bond of faith and trust in marriage. It is believed that observing this fast ensures long life of the life partner.

Ahoi Ashtami fast is observed by mothers for the happiness and bright future of their children. This fast is observed on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in Kartik month. The fast lays the basic foundation of a family and marks the commencement of life. The love and responsibility of one generation to another generation comes to the fore from this fast.

Vishwakarma Diwas is also celebrated this month. On this day, machines, tools, etc all the nonliving things that help us earn our living are worshipped and given their due respect. Be it a businessman, factory worker, laborer or farmer, all of them worship their equipment.

Therefore, many such festivals are celebrated in this Kartik month, which shows the harmony between life and nature in one way or the other. The positive development of a person is possible only by undertaking both of them together.

Rituals to be followed during the Kartik month


  • Charity holds great importance in Kartik month. In this month one can donate grains, sesame seeds, money, clothes, blankets, shoes, umbrellas and also Deepdan.

  • One can also fast in this month by having just one meal in the entire day.

  • Lord Vishnu and Sun should be worshipped in this month.

  • One should wake up before sunrise, after doing all the daily work, Puja, Havan and Yagya should be performed.

  • It is considered very auspicious to read and listen to religious texts like the Ramayana, and the Bhagavad Gita.

  • One should sleep on the floor in this month.

  • In order to attain salvation one should bathe in rivers such as Ganga or sesame water and worshipping saints in the Kartik month.

  • In Kartik month, one should try and speak less. This prevents us from uttering unnecessary words.

  • One should eat food preferably eat food in Palash leaves.

  • One must avoid eating onion, garlic, spicy food, non-veg, drinks and Udad Daal.

  • One must feed Bhramans and seek their blessings.
