Ramanujacharya Jayanti 2024 – Philosophy & History

Amongst Indian saints and Indian tradition, Ramanujacharya Ji too is a popular name. He is famous in the field of philosophy. He preached devotion through his knowledge and spiritual energy. Being a Vaishnava Saint he also had an impact on traditionally followed rituals. This year Ramanujacharya Jayanti will be celebrated on 12 May 2024, Sunday.

Ramanujacharya’s Era

Ramanujacharya ‘s era was from 1017 AD to 1137 AD. He was born in the Tirukudur region of South India. The first disciple of Ramanujacharya was Ramanand followed by Kabir, Raydas and Surdas.

A specific dualism of Ramanujacharya

Acharya Ramanuja’s theory of Vishishtadvaita Darshan depicts several old beliefs. This philosophy is an opinion from amongst various old Darshans. It’s school of thought is one of the most popular among all those preached by Ramanujacharya. It gained mileage on account of religious rebellion that took place in South India.

The meaning of the Vishishtadvaita brings the doctrine of a specific Advaita to the fore. Ramanujacharya popularised this concept between 1037-1137 A.D. This philosophical view states that both the universe and the living beings are different from Brahma, but they originate from the same Brahma, thus there is a very close relationship. This relationship can be understood with examples such as soul in a body, the Sun and its rays etc. Brahma has many forms but is still singular.

Ramanuja Ji studied Vedas and classified the Vedas into different categories – the unity of the Upanishads and Vedanta Sutras formed the basis of his method. In the form of God, the living entity in Brahm is related in its entirety, Ramanuja elaborated his views on these things.

In Vishishtadvaita Darshan it has been mentioned that our body is Vishishta, the soul is Ansh and God is Anshi. Before the existence of the world, the situation was ‘Sukshma Chit Vishith Brahma’, after the origin of the world, the situation is ‘Sthool Chit Vishitha Brahma’. ‘Tayo Ek Iti Brahma’ is when the soul is freed from the body. The soul is freed from all its boundaries and it merges into Brahma. This phenomenon is called Moksha. The soul that gets freed from the body becomes equivalent to God but is not completely God.

What is the difference between the views of Shankaracharya and Ramanujacharya?

This theory of Acharya Ramanuja also appears to contradict Adi Shankaracharya’s thoughts. Shankaracharya called the world Maya. Ramanujacharya says that this world was created by Brahma so how can it be Maya.

Ramanujacharya holds a pioneer position in Guru-Disciple relation

Ramanujacharya was a disciple of Yadav Prakash, but after sometime ideological differences started emerging in between them. They parted ways, however, Shri Yadav Prakash felt bad about it. He took Sanyas and started serving Shri Ramanujacharya by becoming his disciple. Shri Ramanujacharya too was believed to be a family man, later he abandons the material world and sets out to fulfill his purpose.

The relation between Ramanujacharya and Yamunacharya

Ramanujacharya Ji learned a lot from Yamunacharya Ji, an 11th-century scholar. But some followers believe that Ramanujacharya Ji didn’t meet Yamunacharya as Yamunacharya had died before the birth of Ramanujacharya.

According to some poets, Ramanujacharya got Yamunacharya’s position after Yamunacharya’s death. Ramunacahrya established himself as the new Guru of Shri Vaishnav community only after Yamunacharya’s death.

Shri Ramanujacharya used to live in Kanchipuram and Yamunacharya Ji was a famous Alvar saint of Mathadish. It is believed that, when Yamunacharya Ji realised that he was going to die, he asked his disciples to call Ramanujacharya Ji. His disciples send the message to Ramanujacharya Ji. Ramanujacharya Ji at once leaves for Mathadish but Yamunacharya Ji dies before Ramunajacharya could see him. Hence it is believed that the two never met.

When Ramanujacharya Ji saw the dead body of Yamunacharya Ji, he noticed that his three fingers were bent inwards. Everybody tries to decode the secret behind it. Explaining the mystery of the secret, Shri Ramanujacharya Ji says aloud – ‘to all those people who are enjoying life without understanding its true meaning, I will protect them without any discrimination by taking them under the blessings of Lord Vishnu’. It is believed on hearing these words Shri Yamunacharya Ji’s one finger straightens.

In the second vow, Ramanujacharya Ji says that -’I will write Shri Bhashya to protect people and give them better knowledge’. On hearing these words Yamunacharya Ji’s second finger straightens. In the last vow, Ramanujacharya Ji says that – ‘Just like Parashar Muni wrote Vishnu Purana for the development and welfare of the people, similarly I will train a disciple and make him as capable as Yamunacharya name to pay Yamunacharya’s debt. ‘

Finally, on hearing these words the last finger of Yamunacharya Ji became straightened. On seeing these miracles all the disciples and people present accept Ramanujacraya as the next Alvandar without any doubt.

Champa Dwadashi (Champak Dwadashi) 2024

The festival of Champak Dwadashi is celebrated on the Dwadashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month. This year Champa Dwadashi will be celebrated on 19  June 2024. On this date, Lord Vishnu is worshiped and Champa flowers are offered to him. Lord Shri Krishna loves these flowers. When a devotee offers him these flowers on this day, all the desires of the devotee get fulfilled.

Other names for Champa Dwadashi

Every Hindu month has two Dwadashi Tithis. One from amongst these two has been associated with the worship of Lord Shri Vishnu. Dwadashi Tithi is also known as Vishnu Dwadashi. Ancient Hindu scriptures talk about the importance of worshipping Lord Vishnu’s various forms on this day. It is hence believed when a devotee worships Lord Vishnu’s Krishna form on this day, he/she gets very good fruits and is blessed with happiness, wealth and glory.

Champa Dwadashi is also known as Raghav Dwadashi and Rama Lakshmana Dwadashi. On this day, idols of Shri Ram and Shri Lakshman, the incarnation of Vishnu, are also worshiped. After worshiping Rama and Laxman, a pitcher or a Kalash filled with ghee is donated. It is believed that this absolves one of all his/her sins and leads to the attainment of salvation.

The fast begins with Udaya Tithi. First of all, the devotee should wake up in Bharama Muhurat, finish all household chores and then sit for the Puja. The devotee should spread some grains and set a Kalash on it. Place an idol of Lord Vishnu in the Kalash. Offer Abir, Gulal, Kumkum, fragrant flowers, sandalwood and Kheer to the Lord. God should offer Kheer. Food for Brahmins should be organized. Brahmins should also be given clothes, Dakshina etc. It is believed that the Vishnu idol immersed in the Kalash should ideally be given Brahmin on Trayodashi date.

Champak Dwadashi Pooja Vidhi

  • Start the day by remembering Lord Krishna.
  • One should resolve to worship Lord Krishna after retiring from daily chores.
  • An idol of Lord Krishna the Avatar of Lord Vishnu should be installed.
  • On this day one should also worship Rama, another avatar of Shri Vishnu.
  • Shri Ramdarbar should be decorated.
  • Chandan, Akshat, Tulsi Dal and flowers should be offered to the Lord while chanting ‘Hare Rama, Hare Krishna’.
  • The idol of God should be bathed with Panchamrit. After this, the idol should be wiped and adorned with beautiful clothes.
  • A lamp, incense sticks should be lit in front of the idol.
  • Attar, sandalwood and flowers should be offered to the Lord.
  • If Champa flowers are not available then yellow-white flowers can be used.
  • Once the Aarti is done, Bhog should be offered to the Lord.
  • The Prasad should then be distributed amongst everyone.
  • Brahmins should be offered food, donations etc as per one’s ability.

The Champak Dwadashi fast should ideally start from Ekadashi. If for some reason this is not feasible then one can start the fast on Dwadashi. After fasting the entire day of Ekadashi, Jagran Kirtan should be done at night. Next day one must take a bath early in the morning and then Brahmins should be given fruits, food and donation as per one’s capacity. It is believed when one observes the Champa Dwadashi fast by following all rituals properly then he/she receives Baikuntha. The glory of this fast destroys all the sins of the fast and he is able to enjoy all the worldly pleasures.

Importance of Champa flowers in Puja

Champa flowers are mainly used in the worship of Lord Shri Krishna on Champa Dwadeshi. As per another belief, Champa flowers are also related to Lord Shiva. Moreover, on the day of Jyeshtha month Dwadeshi, these flowers are used in the worship of Shri Vishnu. It is believed that this leads to the fulfillment of wishes.

A mythological belief about the flowers of Champa is also very popular, according to which neither a moth, nor the butterfly, nor a bee perch on Champa flowers. There is a Hindi saying

“चम्पा तुझमें तीन गुण-रंग रूप और वास, अवगुण तुझमें एक ही भँवर न आयें पास’’। रूप तेज तो राधिके, अरु भँवर कृष्ण को दास, इस मर्यादा के लिये भँवर न आयें पास।।”

According to beliefs, Champa has been regarded as Radhika and Krishna as Bhanvara and bees as Gopas and Gopikas. Bees never sit on Champa as Radhika belongs to Krishna.

Even in Vastu Shastra, this flower is considered very auspicious. It has been considered a symbol of good luck. Keeping it in the house brings wealth.

There is no pollination in this flower, as pollinating agents like butterflies, bees, moths etc. do not perch on it. Along with this, it is also said that Champa flower is considered to be free from lust. In other words, it represents sacrifice. Therefore, Lord Shri Vishnu is adorned by garlands, bracelets, leg bracelets etc. ornaments made of this flower. This appeases Lord Vishnu immediately.

Importance of Champak/Champa Dwadeshi

It is believed that when one worships Lord Krishna with Champa flowers on Champa Dwadeshi, that person attains Moksha. Yudhistar was told about the Champa Dwadeshi story by Lord Shri Krishna. Lord Krishna said to Yudhishtar, “One who will fast on Shukla Paksha, Jyeshta month, Dwadeshi Tithi by reciting Hare Rama, Hare Krishna, that person will receive fruit equivalent to the donation of a thousand cows.” All the wishes of a person who observes this fast as per rituals on Dwadeshi Tithi get fulfilled, not only this, he/she also attains a place in Vishnu Lok.

Ashadh Month Skanda Shashthi 2024

This year, the festival of Skanda Shashthi will be celebrated on Ashada, Shukla Shashthi on Friday,  July 24, 2024. Lord Skanda is worshiped on this day of Skanda Shashthi. Lord Skanda eradicates all kinds of sufferings from a person’s life.

Skanda Shashthi Puja Muhurat Time

  • Skanda Shashthi starts – 11  July  at 10:05
  • Skanda Shashti concludes – 12 July 12:33

Skanda Shashthi Tithi is also called Kanda Shashthi. Lord Karthikeya’s is associated with this date. Skanda Lord’s birth time has been linked to the Shashthi Tithi. Skanda worship has been very important all over India, but in South India, the festival of Skanda Shashthi is even more profound. According to beliefs and stories, the relationship of God has been very deep with the south. There is a popular story that explains the reason behind this relationship.

Skanda Shashti Importance

Worshiping Lord Skanda, observing a fast, carrying out a Puja etc. on the Shashti Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Ashada month brings in blessings from Trideva. Problems of progeny are solved by observing this fast. If one’s child is having problems, then observing this fast, performing its Puja as per rituals ensures the child is freed from all types of issues. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati should also be worshiped on this day along with Lord Skanda.

Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati’s son Skanda is considered to be Ganesh’s elder brother. Just as Chaturthi Tithi is related to Ganesha’s birth, Shashthi is associated with Skanda’s birth. There is a difference of 1 day which is Panchami Tithi between the birth and Puja of these two brothers.

Traditionally people have been fasting on the Shashthi to appease Lord Skanda. Shashti is considered as the best Tithi to observe a fast for Lord Skanda. Skanda Bhagwan is also called Kumar because his form always remains the same. This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over India. Worshipping Lord Skanda brings in auspiciousness from all directions. Vastu Doshas ends and negative energy is removed.

Skanda Bhagwan Katha

The birth story of Lord Skanda is read and heard on Skanda Shashthi. Along with this, other stories of God are also heard on this day. According to ancient texts, once the sage Narada Muni went to Kailash with a fruit, both Ganesha and Skanda debated for the fruit. To resolve this a competition was arranged. It was decided the child who finishes three rounds of the earth first will receive the fruit. That the first person who takes three rounds of the earth will get the fruit. Skanda mounts his peacock and starts his three rounds of the earth. However, when he returns back, he is surprised to find Ganesha still there. Ganesha had simply taken three rounds of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Hence the fruit was given to him. This upset Skanda and he went towards the south direction.

The other side of the same story is that while Skanda mounts his peacock, Ganesha mounts his pet which is a mouse. No matter what the mouse will not be able to move as fast as the peacock. In such a situation Ganehsa applies his intelligence, tells that you are my world and takes three rounds of them. In this way, he receives the fruit. Skanda however disagrees and says there is no logic to this theory. He gets angry and upset and goes south. This is the reason Skanda is worshipped on a large scale in South India.

Skanda Dev and Tarkasur Sangram

Lord Skanda was born to complete a special task. There was once a very powerful monster Tarkasur. He went through hard penance to acquire strength. On becoming powerful he conquered the kingdom of the Devtas based on the strength of his penance. He was also blessed by Brahma Ji with a boon that only Shiva’s son could kill him.

The power of Tarakasura increases greatly and he expels the Devas from their place and starts torturing them. The Devas seek shelter from Brahma Ji and ask for a solution. Brahma informs them that Takasur can be defeated only by Shiva’s son. On knowing this the Devas start praying to Lord Shiva. In order to fulfill the Deva’s wishes Lord Shiva gets married to Goddess Parvati and Skanda is born.

Skanda is made the commander of the Devas. A great war ensues between the Devas and the Asuras, in which Skanda slays Tarakasura and restores the position of the Devas.

Why is Kumar called Skanda Dev

Lord Skanda is worshiped in child form and youth. Kartikeya received the boon of always being young from the Devas and hence he is also called Kumar. Swami Karthikeya is also the commander of the army, so worshiping him for victory in any war and battle is also auspicious. Prestige, victory, order, discipline of military power are derived from them.

Rules of Skanda Shashthi Puja and fast

On Skanda Shashthi, along with Skanda God, his family should also be worshiped. Everyone along with Lord Skanda including Lord Shiva, Parvati and Ganesh should be placed in the temple for Puja. Akhand Diya should also be lit in front of Skanda Lord. Lord Skanda should be given a bath. On this day Skanda Lord should be offered saffron, milk, seasonal fruits, nuts etc. Prasad should be distributed after the Puja Katha.

Man is able to move to the next level in life because of this very nature. The 9 days of Navratri signify this development of man from one stage to another. The Ashadh month Gupt Navratri festival is a boon for the fulfillment of pleasures and desires.

Ashadh Gupt Navratri auspicious time

This year, Ashadh Gupt Navratri will begin early in the morning on Saturday, 06 July 2024. One this day should wake up early, take a bath, light a ghee lamp in front of Mata and then begin the Puja. One should recite Durgasaptashati and remember all the forms of Durga on this day.

Number of Navratris

The festival of Navratri is dedicated to Mata Durga. During this time various forms of Shakti are worshiped. Many rituals are followed in this Puja. Chanting and meditation are amongst them. Navaratri comes four times in a year, out of which two are celebrated in great detail. One is celebrated during the Chaitra month, the other is celebrated as Shardiya Navaratri. Both of these are celebrated by people on a very wide scale.

The other two Navratris are celebrated in a milder manner. They are celebrated with the objectives of attaining Siddhi and Tantra Gyan. These two Navratris are celebrated in Magh month and Ashadh month. These Navratris are celebrated as Gupt Navratris and they lead to the attainment of Siddhi.

Shakti Puja Katha

Several stories are written on Navratri Shakti Pujan. The basis of these stories are Veda-Purana etc. A story is also found in Ramayana that speaks about Shri Rama performing a Puja for Shakti. The war between Rama-Ravana had reached a stage where Shri Rama’s army was almost defeated. In order to come out of this crisis.

Shri Rama started worshiping Durga Mata for power to defeat Ravana.

Ram decides to worship Goddess Durga for Shakti, he resolves to offer 108 lotuses to Mata. He keeps placing one lotus after the other. However, in the end, he realises that he has one lotus less. This upsets him and he is unhappy about not being able to fulfill his resolution. Just then he realises that his mother used to call him Kamal Nayan. In order to fulfill his resolution, he decides to offer one of his eyes to Mata.

The minute he sets to remove his one eye, Mata appears and stops him from removing his eye. She feels very happy by his commitment and ability to uphold his promise. She blesses Ram with Shakti which helps him to win the war against Ravana. Ram is able to conquer Lanka, defeat Ravana and kill him by worshipping Goddess Durga

Mahishasura Mardini

According to another legend, the Devas in heaven created Goddess Durga to kill the demon named Mahishasura. All the devas gave Goddess Durga their respective powers. This makes Goddess Durga immensely powerful and she becomes a symbol of power. A battle between her and Mahishasur ensues. However, as Goddess Durga was the culmination of powers of all the Devas, Mahisasur could not survive. He struggled and Goddess Durga killed him. This is how the end of Mahishasura was possible. Having killed Mahishasura, Goddess Durga is also addressed as Mahishasura Mardini.

Mahavidyas are worshiped in Gupta Navratri

Gupt Navratri is a stepwise process in which every type of Shakti comes into being. In this Shakti Puja, Goddess Kali, Goddess Tara, Goddess Lalita, Goddess Maa Bhuvaneshwari, Goddess Tripura Bhairavi, Goddess Chinnamastika, Goddess Maa Dhumavati, Goddess Baglamukhi, Goddess Matangi, Goddess Kamala. All these powers are mainly worshiped in Tantra Sadhana.

The worship of ten Mahavidyas is given prominence in Gupta Navratri. It is a symbol of strength. Each form of Mahavidya is complete in itself and capable of running the universe. Each Mahavidya has secrets within it. Mahavidya is practiced by all living beings. It resolves all kinds of problems. These ten Mahavidyas are considered very capable of Tantra Sadhna.

Ashadha Gupta Navratri Puja and Penance

The Devi Bhagwat has references to these Navratri too. This period is related to Tantric actions and Shakti Sadhana. Sages practice difficult penance in this period. A lot of attention has to be paid to the purity and Sattvikta at this time. Even the smallest error can lead to failure of penance. It is hence very important to pay full attention while performing penance in this period.

In order to achieve Siddhis in Gupta Navratri Puja, the seeker has to cleanse his/her body thoroughly. This purification takes place during the chanting of Mantras. Everyday Puja should be done at the same place where it was commenced. The place of Puja should not be changed again and again. An Asan should be used to carry out the Puja. The Aasan should not be used by anyone else. The same level of concentration and patience should be maintained on all nine days.

Chant the following MAntra on Ashadh Gupt Navratri

Kali Tara Mahavidya Shodashi Bhuvaneshwari.

Bhairavi Chinnamasta ch Vidya Dhumavati and.

Bagla Siddha Vidya f Matangi Kamalatmika

Eita Dasmahavidya: Siddhvidya Prakritita:॥

Each form of Goddess is described in this mantra. This Mantra is one of the easiest, and simplest means of pleasing the Goddess.

When is Varad Chaturthi in 2024 and its importance.

The Chaturthi Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Sawan is celebrated as “Varad Chaturthi”. This year, Varad Chaturthi will be celebrated on 08 August 2024. Lord Ganesha is worshiped on this day. Varad Chaturthi means blessing by Lord Ganesha. Ganesh ji is called by many names like Vinayaka, Vighanhartha.

The Chaturthi Tithi of each month is related to Lord Ganesha. Just like Lord Ganesha has different names, each Chaturthi has a different name. The Chaturthi of Sawan month is also known as Varad Vinayaki Chaturthi. It is very auspicious to worship Shri Ganesh on Varad Chaturthi at noon and midnight.

Varad Chaturthi Puja Vidhi

Varad Chaturthi Puja is primarily done in the afternoon as it has a special significance. Lord Ganesha’s idol should be set at the place of Puja of Varad Chaturthi. The devotee must resolve to observe a fast the entire day. Ganesha should be offered Akshat, Roli, Atar, flower garland, Durva, Laddu etc.

  • While offering Durva to Ganesha, one must chant ऊँ गं गणपतयै नम:
  • Aarti should be done by lighting a lamp of Ghee and camphor.
  • Bhog should be offered to Lord Ganesha and should be distributed to everyone as Prasad.
  • One can consume fruits in the evening while observing the fast. Lord Ganesha should be worshipped again in the evening at the time of consuming fruits.
  • After the pooja, food should be served to the Bhramin and only after that food can be consumed by the devotee.

Varad Chaturthi fast story

Once when Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati are spending leisure time in the Himalayas, Mata Parvati asks Lord Shiva to play Chaucer. Shiva starts playing Chaucer to please Mata Paravati. However, it becomes difficult to arrive at a decision on who is winning. Also, no one present there was willing to side either of them. As a solution, Lord Shiva decides to incarnate a child from weed and grass. The incarnated child will then decide who is winning the Chaucer.

Parvati wins in the game, but when the child was asked, the child says that Lord Shiva has won. On hearing these words, Goddess Parvati gets angry and curses the effigy boy to stay in the mud forever. The child then seeks forgiveness saying he did not do anything deliberately. On seeing the child cry, Mother Parvati’s heart melts and she suggests a way to get freedom from the curse.

Mata Parvati says ‘A year from today, Nag Kanya girls will come here for worship on Chaturthi. Follow the Ganesh Chaturthi Puja Vidhi and observe the fast as suggested by them. This will relieve you of your curse.’ As stated by Mata Parvati exactly after a year the Nag Kanya girls come to that place on Varad Chaturthi. The child follows all the Puja Vidhi procedures as suggested by Nag Kanya girls and also observes the Chaturthi fast. On doing so he gets relieved from Mata Parvati’s curse.

Perform Chandra Puja on Varad Chaturthi but avoid Chandra Darshan

Moon should not be seen from the beginning till the end of Varad Chaturthi Tithi. It is believed that Chandra Dev should not be seen on Chaturthi Tithi. According to mythology, the Moon was cursed by Lord Ganesha. As per the curse if anyone sees the Moon on Chaturthi Tithi, then it will be stained. For this reason, Chandra Darshan should be avoided on this day. It is said that Lord Krishna also had to bear the impact of this curse. This, however, is more relevant for the Chaturthi Tithi that falls in Bhadrapad month.

Lord Krishna was falsely accused of stealing a gem named Syamantaka. Narada informs Lord Krishna that he has been falsely accused as he had seen the Moon on Chaturthi of Bhadrapad month. He further mentions that if Lord Krishna wants to get rid of this Mithya Dosha, then Lord Krishna should worship Ganesha on Chaturthi Tithi. Lord Krishna follows Narada’s advice and is freed from the Mithya Dosha curse.

Mithya Dosha Nivaran Mantra

Depending on the start and end time of Chaturthi Tithi, the Darshan of the Moon may be forbidden for two consecutive days. According to the rules of the Dharma Granth Dharmasindhu, during this Chaturthi date, Moon sighting is prohibited. According to this rule, the Moon should not be seen from before the Moon sets on Chaturthi Tithi till after rises and sets again the next day.

If for some reason a person ends up seeing the Moon then the following Mantra can be chanted to get rid of the Mithya Dosha that takes place because of Chandra Darshan on Chaturthi. Lord Shri Krishna also chanted this same Mantra:

“सिंहः प्रसेनमवधीत्सिंहो जाम्बवता हतः।
सुकुमारक मारोदीस्तव ह्येष स्यमन्तकः॥”

Chaturthi Tithi of this day is known as Kalank Chaturthi. But it does not have much effect on other Chaturthi. If the moon is seen on Ganesh Chaturthi, then measures have also been given to get rid of Mithya Dosha. This involves conducting Ganesha Puja and chanting the Ganesh Mantra.

Worship Ancestors on Somvati Amavasya

There is an important tradition in Somvati Amavasya of thanking and respecting one’s ancestors. According to religious stories, when life ends a new journey begins. Our soul starts moving towards a different world. It moves from one level to another.

The responsibility of making this journey smooth lies on the shoulders of relatives of the departed. This is done by performing several rituals, donations etc in their name. This procedure is known as Shradh Karm. It is an expression of gratitude towards the departed souls.

On this day meals are offered to Brahmins and Pitra Shanti Puja is organized. Apart from this food is given to cows or crows. When we think of our ancestors and perform good tasks with them in our minds, we definitely get results from the same. Our ancestors’ souls are blessed by our actions.

When Puja is done and food is served in the name of our ancestors, we are blessed by them. However for some reason if it is not possible to serve the poor then in that case so long as one wishes well of the poor, performs Shradh and offers donations to the best of one’s capabilities in the name of the ancestors, the ancestors will certainly bestow their blessings.

Importance of Tarpan on Somvati Amavasya

On Somvati Amavasya, Tarpan is performed in which water, sesame seeds, and food are offered to the ancestors. Our ancestors are remembered on the day of Tarpan. On the day of Somvati Amavasya, one commemorates the departed soul and prays for their peace. Tarpan can also be performed the following way. One can put water, Akshat and sesame seeds in a vessel or in folded hands and recite the following line three times – ‘पूर्वजों आप तृप्त हो जाएं’and leave the Akshat and sesame seeds.

Somvati Amavasya Katha

Somvati Amavasya Katha goes like this – Once in a village, there used to be a poor Brahmin family, that Brahmin had a daughter. His daughter was a capable and talented girl. As she grew up, her father decided to get her married. He was not able to find a suitable boy for her. One fine day, a saint visited their home. The Brahmin girl served him nicely. Seeing her kind behaviour, the saint blessed her. The Brahmin couple informed the saint that they are worried about her marriage. On hearing this, he studied the girl’s palm and realised that it did not have a marriage line. The saint suggested a remedy.

The saint tells them that in a distant village there lived a lady named Sona. She lived with her son and daughter-in-law. She was a compassionate and religious lady. If their daughter serves her nicely and the lady gives her Sindoor in return then the daughter can get married. Following this, the Brahmin couple sends their daughter to her. The Brahmin daughter tells everything to the lady named Sona and asks her to let his daughter stay. She allows the Brahmin girl to stay. The girl impresses the lady and in turn, she gives her Sindoor and blesses her with a happy married life. This way the Brahmin girl gets married.

The Solar eclipse is a scientific astronomical event. At the time of the solar eclipse, the Moon, the Sun and the Earth come in the same line. When the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth, the light of the Sun gets interrupted for some time. This phenomenon is known as Solar Eclipse.

Solar eclipse legend

Besides the scientific basis, solar eclipse also has religious significance. An extremely ancient story related to this context is found in The Bhagavata, The Vishnu Purana and The Mahabharata. This story begins with the churning of the sea.

The story goes like this: During the period of Prahlad, Vishnu’s one devotee gets killed. Under the reign of King Bali, the power of the demons increases immensely. The demons, with the help of their power, try to establish their supremacy over all the realms.

On the other hand, due to the curse of sage Durvasa, the Devas are deprived of their power. As a result, King Bali’s reign got established in the whole world. Indra and other Devtas go to Brahma ji. They ask Lord Brahma to restore their powers. Lord Brahma asks the Devtas to seek shelter under Lord Vishnu. The Devtas then call out for help from Lord Vishnu.

As a solution for the Devtas to establish supremacy again, Lord Vishnu suggests Samudra Manthan. Lord Vishnu befriends not only the Devtas but also the Danavas. The Devtas too speak to the kings of demons Bali. They persuade him to carry out the Samudra Manthan for the nectar from the sea as well as jewels. Bali agrees to carry out the Samudra Manthan with the Devtas.

Mandarachal mountain is chosen for churning the sea and Vasuki Nag is made the rope. Lord Vishnu incarnates as a tortoise to stabilize the mountain and then the sea is churned by placing the Mandarachal mountain on the back of the tortoise. During this churning, a total of fourteen gems are excavated. All the gems are then distributed between the demons and the deities equally and finally the nectar is obtained.

Dhanvantari appears with the urn of nectar but the demons take the urn of that nectar from Dhanwantari as they are powerful. As the Devatas do not have any power, they feel frustrated and cannot do anything. Lord Vishnu steps in to ensure the Devatas get the nectar. Lord Vishnu incarnates as Mohini. The demons get attracted to the Mohini form of Lord Vishnu. Mohini takes the Amrit Kalash from them and tells them she will serve the nectar. The demons are smitten by Mohini and agree to her immediately. The Devatas and the Demons sit separately.

The demons are completely enthralled by Mohini and forget about the Amrit Paan. Taking advantage of this situation, Mohini starts serving the nectar only to the deities. However, a demon named Rahu realizes the trick. He incarnates himself as a Devata and sits with the Devatas. The Sun and the Moon recognize him, but its too late as by then Rahu had already consumed the nectar.

The minute the sun and the moon recognize Rahu, Lord Vishnu separates his head from the body with the Sudarshan Chakra. But Rahu because Rahu had drunk the nectar he became immortal. From then on his head is called Rahu and Torso is called Ketu. For this reason, Rahu always eclipses the Sun and the Moon. This phenomenon is scientifically called the Solar Eclipse and the Lunar Eclipse.

There was once a benevolent king Satyavrat. He was very religious and followed all rituals. Once he was standing on the banks of the Kritmala river and performing Tarpan. Suddenly a fish popped into his hand. As soon as he tried to release the fish in the river, that fish urged him to not do so. Seeing this, the king decided to protect the life of the fish. He put the fish in his Kamandal filled with water and brought the fish to his palace.

But in a day the fish grew so big that it could not be accommodated in the Kamandal. As the fish could not fit inside the Kamandal, it requested the King to shift it to a larger space. King Satyavrat took out the fish and put her in a big pitcher filled with water. But in just a few seconds the fish outgrew the pitcher also. After this, the king placed the fish in a lake. Once again, the fish outgrew the lake too. The king tried to put the fish in different water bodies of different sizes but the fish outgrew everything. In the end, the king placed her in the ocean.

But the fish outgrew the ocean also. Finally, the king realised that this is not an ordinary fish and questioned the fish. King Satyavrat bowed in front of the fish and said – ‘I have not seen a creature like this till date, kindly tell me the secret on who you are and reveal to me who you really are. You are not a normal creature’. On hearing this, Lord Vishnu appears and tells him that he has incarnated in the form of a fish. He says, ‘After seven days from today, all the three worlds will submerge in water, at that time a big boat will arrive. You have to get all the Devas, flora, fauna, living beings, and all other important things on to the boat. Then I will appear again in my fish Avatar. You tie the boat to my horn using the Vasuki snake. As I will not submerge the boat too won’t submerge and all of you will remain safe’. Having said this Lord Vishnu again starts meditating. Thus he gives the responsibility of saving the world to King Satyavrat.

Satyavrat follows the words of Lord Vishnu. Then devastation occurs on the seventh day and Satyavrat boards the boat taking everyone as instructed. Lord Vishnu appears in Matsya form. Everyone in the boat is saved and the devastation ends.
