Gyan Panchami 2024 : Why Gyan Panchami is celebrated

Gyan Panchami is related to Jainism. It is an extremely revered and important day for everyone. The festival of ‘Gyan Panchami’ is celebrated on Panchami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. According to beliefs, Lord Mahavira’s Darshan in the form of scriptures had first taken place at this time. Till then, knowledge was passed on using the Shruti tradition. As per this tradition, Lord Mahavira only preached his main disciples. These disciples would listen attentively and then assimilate all the knowledge. They would then spread this knowledge further to the people and explain it to everyone.

Prior to this, the tradition of noting down Mahavira’s script did not exist. His preachings were learnt only by listening and learning at the same time hence the name ‘Shrut’ was given. Gyan Panchami, also known as Shrut Panchami. Jain scriptures are worshipped and studied on this day. Earlier, Jain knowledge used to follow the Acharya tradition of verbal form.

Gyan Panchami Katha

The festival of Gyan Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of Deepawali. It is believed that knowledge expands on this day. Knowledge and Karma are connected to each other. It is only through knowledge we can cleanse our Karmas. Understanding the glory of knowledge and making ourselves aware of it is nothing but Gyan Panchami. Many stories are found with respect to Gyan Panchami.

One story goes like this – There used to be a king named Ajitsen, who had a son named Varadatta. Varadatta was not intelligent, the Raja was very disappointed because there was no improvement in his son’s intellect. The king appointed many qualified teachers for his son, but all those teachers were of no use. The king’s son continued to remain dim. The king began to feel sad due to his son’s condition. The king was very worried. He thought ‘If the successor of the state is not eligible, then how can the future of the state remain safe.’

To resolve the problem, King Ajitsen makes a declaration that whoever can make his foolish son a worthy knowledgeable person will be rewarded. The King promises such a person security for life. Despite this announcement, the king does not find anyone. Slowly the health of his son also started deteriorating. Varadatta gets afflicted by leprosy. Everyone starts avoiding Varadatta because of the disease. This increases the King’s anxiety even more. He realises that finding a suitable bride for his son will be very challenging. This keeps him worried day and night. Finally, he discovers a girl, the daughter of a Seth who too was afflicted by leprosy. The girl had one more flaw she could not even speak.

Once a very famous Dharmacharya came to the king’s kingdom and everyone was fascinated by his sermons. The king and Seth approach both visit the Dharmacharya to listen to his sermons and to get their questions answered. The father of the girl inquires about the fate of his daughter. In response, Acharya Maharaj tells Seth that the girl is suffering because of her Karmas in past lives.

As per the Dharmacharya, there was a Seth named Jindev. His wife was beautiful. Both of them used to live with their children. But due to the pride of wealth, the wife had no value for education. If the teachers punished her children, she would call them bad. She would also get into fights with her husband on this matter. The Dharmacharya tell the Seth ‘Your daughter is the same beauty and she is born dumb due to disdain for knowledge.’

Similarly, King Ajitsen too wanted to know about his son Varadatta’s fate. The King wanted to understand why Vardatta was not born with an intellect and suffers from leprosy. The Acharya tells the king that his son too despised knowledge in the previous birth. There was a Seth named Vasu. He had two sons, Vasusara and Vasudev. Once the children get the opportunity to meet a great saint. Both the boys receive education on account of the great saint. Vasudev served the Guru a lot with a pure character, and after the death of the Guru, he got the post of Acharya. At the same time, the other brother becomes greedy. He does not make much effort and enjoys life. Vasudev, on the other hand, used to get very tired because of physical and mental exertion. He becomes sad when he sees his brother enjoying all the pleasures of life without working hard.

Once Vasudev gets very tired of his work and decides to no longer work hard and also resolves to not share his knowledge with others. He stops believing in the power of knowledge. That is why he was born as a fool in this birth. In this way, both the King’s son and Seth’s daughter are facing problems in this birth because of their past Karma.

It is hence important to always worship knowledge. Kartik Shukla Panchami depicts this importance of knowledge. When one worships knowledge on this day by following all the rituals, his/her problems get eliminated and life gets filled with auspiciousness.

Importance of Gyan Panchami

This day is considered very important in Jain society. Jain scripture was written on this day for the first time. Lord Mahavira’s knowledge was compiled into a book by several Acharyas on this day i.e. Jyeshtha Shukla Panchami. Dharsanacharya composed the scripture called Shatkhandagam with the help of Pushpadanta and Bhootha Bali. This book contains information about Jainism. From this day onwards, the Shrut tradition was presented in a scripted form. This auspicious day is celebrated as Shrut Panchami.

Shradh is performed for the ancestors. In this, Pind Daan is done for the ancestors. Food is given to Brahmins and charity etc. is done. It all comes under Shraddha rituals. By the way, Shraddha rituals are done in Amavasya, Shraddha Paksha, Sankranti, the death Tithi of ancestors, etc. Normally, Shraddha rituals are done mainly during Amavasya Tithi or in Pitru Paksha.

The period of Pitru Paksha comes during Ashwin month and Pitra rituals are observed in this month. By performing Shraddha rituals, one’s ancestors are satisfied and blessings are obtained.

Freedom from Pitruruna and Pitra Dosh

Pitrurana means a loan of ancestors. This loan is a loan that our ancestors would have taken in their lifetime. There are several types of Pitrurana. When our ancestors are not able to fulfill their loan obligations it gets converted into Pitradosh Dosha for us. If Pitradosh is formed in the horoscope of a person, then such a person will have to bear discord in life, it will impact progeny and also economic growth. The person will run into obstacles while doing any auspicious task. There will be no progress either in the job or in business.

Pitrabadha Dosha is also a type of Dosha. In this case, the plants, Nakshatras may be well placed, there may also not be Vastu Dosha but if there is a likelihood of sudden misery or lack of money, then this Dosha is called Pitrubadha Dosha

Magha Nakshatra is an extremely important time for performing Shraddh to avoid these defects. The ancestral work done in this constellation gives peace to the ancestors. In Ashwin Krishna Paksha, It is believed that ancestors dominate the Lunar world in Ashwin Krishna Paksha and they come on earth during this period.

Shradh rituals are done during the time when the Sun transits Virgo in the Ashwin month. It is believed that ancestors visit their clan and Shraddha Karma is done to satisfy them. These rituals bring peace to the ancestors. When the ancestors are happy, they bless the lineage with happiness and prosperity. If people do not perform Shraddha Karma and Tarpan for the salvation and peace of their forefathers, then they have to suffer and many troubles arise in their life.

How to do Magha Shradh

The forthcoming Magha Nakshatra in Ashwin month is very important for ancestors i.e. to perform Shradh rituals for ancestors. Normally, a Shradh ritual is performed on the death date of the forefathers. But if Magha Nakshatra falls on any day in the Shradh period then this day is particularly special. According to this, one should worship with sesame, Kusha, flower, Akshat, pure water or Ganges water.

After Pind Daan and Tarpan, Bhramins should be served meals. Along with this donation of fruits, clothes, Dakshina and charity work also leads to freedom from Pitra Dosha. Magha Shraddha is a Vedic deed and should be performed with full devotion and devotion.

When all the Shraddh rituals are done perfectly by following all the necessary obligations, it brings a lot of peace to the souls of the forefathers. If for some reason a person is not aware of the death Tithi of their forefathers then the Magha Nakshatra period is good for Pitrudosha Shanti. During Shradh period one must make Kheer and serve it to the forefathers. This can lead to freedom from Pitru Dosha.

No new and Mangal works are done in Magha Nakshatra. People who do not perform Shraadh for their forefathers are not able to get rid of Pitruruna, as a result, they have to suffer from Pitra Dosha. Therefore, it is said Shraddha must be done whatever maybe your abilities.

Things to keep in mind during Shradh

  • Shradh rituals should be done on the death Tithi of the expired person.
  • Milk, barley, rice, black sesame etc. should be offered into a flowing river.
  • Ganga water should be used for the purpose of Tarpan.
  • Pind which is used in Pinddaan for forefathers is made from cooked rice, milk and black sesame. This Pind represents the body.
  • If for some reason one is not able to carry out the Pinddaan ritual, then it is considered best to donate food, money or food to a Brahmin or a poor person.
  • If you are unable to perform Shraddha due to lack of any reason or means, then you can take a bath in a holy river and offer black sesame in water as Tarpan in the name of your forefathers.
  • Cows should be fed in memory of ancestors.
  • Offering water on a peepal tree and lighting an oil lamp is also considered to be good for forefathers.

This fast is also known by the name ‘Jiutiya’ or ‘Jitiya’. This fast is mainly observed in Bihar and some parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Water is not consumed during this fast.

Jivitputrika Fast Puja Vidhi

Jivitputrika fast is observed on the Vyapini Ashtami of Pradosh Kaal. One should take a bath early in the morning and then resolve to observe the fast. The devotee should clean the place of worship with cow dung. In ancient times, the place was cleaned using this technique only. But in today’s time, turmeric and Gangajal are also used.

Along with this, a small pond is also made at the place of worship. A stem of the Pakad tree should be kept near the pond. The idol of Jimutavahana made of grass should be placed in water or in earthen vessels. This idol should be adorned with yellow or red clothes. After this, this idol should be worshipped using Dhoop, Deep, Akshat, flowers, etc. Prasad should also be prepared.

There are different ideologies on this Vrat. Some believe that it is celebrated for one day and some believe that it is celebrated for three days. On the first day, women perform Puja and eat Sarputiya Sabji or Nuni Saag. The second day is called Khar or Khur Jitiya. On this day, women observe Nirjala fast. And Paran is performed on the third and last day. Food is consumed only after Paran. Women wear Jiutiya in a red thread as a necklace.

Jivitputrika Vrat Katha

The results of this fast increase manifold when one reads the Jivitputrika Vrat Katha along with observation of the fast. The story is as follows –

Jimutavahana was a Gandharva prince, he was well behaved and always thought about the welfare of others. Everybody was happy with his work and loved him for this. Jimutvahan’s father too was a renowned king. He decided to pass the throne to his son as he had ruled for a very long time and was growing old.

Jimutavahana was not prepared to be a King. Despite this, the King renounces everything and goes to live in the forests. Jimutvahana rules for some time but eventually he too passes on the throne to his brother. He follows his father’s footsteps and joins him in the forest. He starts serving his father.

One fine day, Jimutvahana sees an old lady crying. On inquiring, the lady tells him that she was born in Naag Vansh and has only one child. According to an old tradition, they have to present one snake, in other words, her child to the Garuda King. Today was the turn of her son.

Jimutavahana assures her that he will protect her son. He presents himself as the Naag son of the old lady Garuda Raj. To do so he lies down covered in a piece of red cloth. Garuda Raj assumes Jimutvahana body to be the body of Naag Putra. He clasps Jimutavahana in his claws and flies towards the mountain. Later on, Garuda Raj discovers that the body was not of the Naag Putra.

Garud Raj asks Jimutavahana to introduce himself. Jimutvahana explains everything to Garuda Raj. After listening to the bravery and altruism of Jimutavahana, Garuda Raj asks him to ask for a boon. Jimutavahana asks him to not take Naag Bali. This impresses Garuda Raj. He blesses Jimutvahana with a long life and frees all the snakes. In this way, the selfless spirit and courage of Jimutavahana saves the Naag community. Since that day, this fast is observed for the good health and long life of children.

Jivitputrika Vrat Mahatmya

Jivitputrika Puja is celebrated during the Pradosh Kaal of Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in Ashwin month. Women with children observe this fast for the happy and healthy life of their children.

Lord Shiva narrates the importance of this fast to Goddess Parvati. He says if women with children and also women who desire to have a child should observe this fast, worship Jimutavahana and read the Katha, then their descendants will never perish.

After worshipping Jimutavahana, meals are offered to the Brahmins. Dakshina is also given to the Brahmins seeking blessings for children. Next day Vrat Paran is observed. This fast blesses the devotees with sons and their healthy life.

He felt that Baba was completely absorbed in himself and incapable of protecting others.

Shri Chand Ji understood what he wanted to say and immediately took out a burning stick from the Kund and planted it at the same place. In no time, the stick grew into a big Chinar tree. Seeing this magic, the landlord apologises to Shri Chandra Ji. It is believed that since that day, the tree is called Chand Chinar.

It is said that a king used to rule the Chamba district near the Ravi river. Without his permission, no sailor was allowed to bring any saint from one river bank to another. Once Shri Chandra Ji visits that place and requests a sailor to help him cross the river. The sailor denies his request because of the King’s orders. He asks Chandraji to get permission from the King. Baba Shri Chand Ji mainly preached that both happiness and sadness should be weighed equally. One should not get attached to them. One will face problems by getting emotionally attached to everything. Shri Chandra Ji took Samadhi after making Baba Gurditta Ji his successor. Baba Gurditta was the son of the sixth Guru of Sikhs, Shri Har Govind Ji.

Studies of Udasi Sampraday

Several ideologies are found on the Udasin Sampraday. These ideologies have been distributed at different places. They mainly have four branches. People who are a part of this community follow Sanatan Dharma. They give importance to the five elements(water, fire, earth, wind, and sky) of life and worship them.

One of their branches belongs to Phool Sahib, Bahadurpur. The Second branch belongs to Baba Hasan, Anandpur near Charankol. The Third branch is in Puri, it belongs to Almast Sahib in Nainital. The Fourth branch is of Govind Sahib, Shikarpur. All these branches or ideologies are different from one another. They are independent of each other.

Kalki Avatar Of Lord Vishnu

Kalki Avatar too is an important incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu is yet to take this Avatar. As per mythological texts, Kalki incarnation will take place in the last phase of Kali Yuga. Right now the first phase of Kali Yuga is going on based on Yuga calculation.

When is Kalki Jayanti celebrated

The festival of Kalki Jayanti is celebrated on the Shashti Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month. According to the scriptures, the tenth incarnation of Lord Vishnu will take place in the last phase of Kali Yuga and will be known as Kalki Avatar. This incarnation will be in the Sandhi period of Kali Yuga and Satyuga, which will consist of 64 forms of art.

Kalki avatar time

According to mythology, Shri Vishnu’s will incarnate as Kalki at Sambhal in Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh. He will be born to a Brahmin couple named Vishnuyasha. Lord Vishnu will ride on a white colored horse in the Kalki Avatar. He will end all evil by riding on the horse. He will destroy the sinners and protect religion once again.

The 24th verse of the 12th Skanda in Srimad Bhagavad Gita talks about Shri Vishnu’s Kalki Avatar. According to this, Lord Vishnu will be born as Kalki when Jupiter, Sun and Moon are together in Pushya Nakshatra. As per mythological beliefs, Satyuga will commence only after Lord Vishnu incarnates in the Kalki Avatar.

Why does Lord Vishnu take this Avatar?

Yada Yada Hi Dharmasya Glanirbhavati Bharata

Abhythanamadharmasya Tadatmanam Srijamyaham

Paritranaya Sadhunang Vinashay Cha Dushkritam

Dharmasangsthapanarthay Sambhabami Yuge Yuge

In this verse given in the Gita, Shri Krishna says, Whenever there will be a loss of Dharma on this earth and Adharma will increase, I will be born on this earth. I will take birth in every age to protect gentlemen and sages, I will ensure the destruction of wrong people and sinners and ensure the establishment of Dharma. This has been the main essence of every incarnation of God. Lord Shri Narayan is hence incarnated in every age to eliminate the sufferings of the world and to establish goodness once again.

What are the ten Avatars of Vishnu?

Shri Vishnu took a total of 10 different Avatars in different forms. These Avatars are a symbol of his Leela. He took these Avatars in every age to save all the devotees and protect religion. The various forms of Lord Vishnu are described in detail in the Vedas-Puranas. There are 24 Avatars of Lord Vishnu, out of which ten Avatars were the most important. His main incarnation was the Matsya Avatar. The 10 dominant Avatars were as follows:

Lord Vishnu incarnates as a fish and protects the earth when it gets submerged in water. In the Koorm Avatar, Lord Vishnu holds the mountain on his back at the time of Samudra Manthan. The Devas and Asuras churn the sea and obtain fourteen gems because of this. In the Varah Avatar, Lord Vishnu protects the earth by killing a demon named Hiranyaksha. Lord Vishnu also protects his devotee Prahlada by killing Hiranyakashipu in Narasimha Avatara.

In Vamana Avatar, Lord Vishnu measures three Lokas with three steps and protects the Devas from King Bali. In Treta Yuga, Lord Vishnu kills Ravana in the form of Rama and establishes the win of good over bad. In Dwapar Yuga, he destroys Kansa in the form of Krishnavatar and protects religion.

Lord Vishnu destroys sinners by taking the Parshuram Avatar and finally as per mythological scriptures, he will incarnate in Kalki Avatar at the end of Kali Yuga. He will take this Avatar to eradicate the suffering of people by ending sinners. Thus Lord Vishnu protects religion in all ages and frees people from the hands of the oppressors.

The difference of opinion related to Kalki Avatar

Among the various incarnations of God, this is the most disputed and full of confusion. This Avatar has remained a question mark as there has not been a unanimous opinion on Kalki Avatar a unanimous opinion able to make it completely unanimous opinion. Some believe the Avatar has already taken place, others believe that it will take place at the end of Kalyug. According to the Kalki Purana, Lord Vishnu will incarnate in Kalki form in Kali Yuga. God will then start the golden age once again. A description of the Kalki Avatar is also found in the Skanda Purana.

In some religious texts and prose, the description and praise found for Kalki Avatar is such that it indicates that this Avatar has already been incarnated. According to the Vayu Purana, Lord Vishnu was born in Kalki Avatar at the final stage of Kali Yuga. In this, Dattatreya, Vyas, Kalki, are praised and are called the incarnations of Vishnu. The description of Kalki is found in the Matsya Purana of Dwapara and Kali Yuga of the Matsya Purana. According to poets Jayadev and Chandidas, Kalki’s incarnation have already taken place. Similar evidence is also found in the Buddhist and Jain texts which are related to Kalki. Description of an emperor known as Kalki is found in the Jain Puranas. According to which, Kalki emperor’s reign took place thousands of years after the death of Mahavira.

So there are several differences of opinion with regards to Vishnu’s Kalki Avatar. At times it may not be possible to conclude anything based on arguments and devotion. Ramamyan’s this Chopai describes this situation aptly “जेहिके जही पर सत्य स्नेहु सो तेहि मिलेयी ना कछु सन्देहु”

How did Kalyuga arrive?

The beginning of Kalyuga is believed to have started since the time of King Parikshit. There is a legend behind this, according to which, once the king was passing through his kingdom and on the way he sees a very well built person hitting a cow and an ox. The bull was very beautiful, it was white and had only one leg. The cow was also beautiful like Kamadhenu.

Seeing the condition of both those animals, King Parikshit scolds the well built man for persecuting the weak animals. The king then decides to punish the man. The man starts trembling with fear, falls to the feet of the King and asks for forgiveness.

At the same time, the bull comes back to its original form which is religion and the cow too comes back to its original form as earth. Both of them share their woes with the king. The well built man represented the Kalyug.

Emperor Parikshit, on requesting Kali Yuga’s pardon, gives his life and orders him to leave. In this way, the Kali Yuga says that the whole earth belongs to you and at this time my presence on earth is in accordance with time, because the copper is over and I have to come.

On Kali Yuga’s insistence, emperor Pratishit forgives him, grants his life and asks him to leave. In response, Kali Yuga says that he has nowhere to go as the entire earth belongs to Emperor Pratiskshit. Moreover, as Dwapara Yuga is over he cannot leave as it’s his time.

On this, the King, after much consideration, gives Kali Yuga a place to live between gambling, drinking, adultery, violence and gold. At that very moment, Kali Yuga is established forever in these places and Kali Yuga arrives on the earth. Kalki the incarnation of Lord Vishnu will end this Kalyug.
