On this, Naradji says that if he receives gold and gems equal to Krishna, then he will not take Krishna along.

Shri Krishna sits on one pan of the scales and in the other pan everyone places ornaments but the pan does not move at all. Finally, Rukmini ji places a Tulsi twig on the pan. The pan instantly equalizes. Naradaji true to his words leaves Lord Krishna behind and takes the Tulsi twig along. Due to Tulsi, the good fortune of the queens was protected. When is Bhishma Panchak in 2024

Bhishma Panchak starts –  11 November 2024, from Monday

Bhishma Panchak ends – 15 November 2024, on Friday

Five days of Bhishma Panchak have been given great importance in Hinduism. On the basis of mythological beliefs and legend, Bhishma Panchak fast has special importance in the month of Kartik. This festival is also known as Panch Bhikhu. This fast begins after Kartik takes a bath. All those who do Kartik Snan observe this fast by following all the rituals.

Bhishma Panchak – Panch Bhikhu Katha

This is a story from the ancient times. There was a very beautiful village where a moneylender lived with his children. The moneylender had a son and also had a daughter-in-law. The daughter in law was very religious. She used to do worship regularly and would follow all rituals. The same was the case for Kartik month too. She would wake up early in the morning and carry out the holy Snan in the Ganga the entire month of Kartik.

The son of the king of the same village also used to take a bath in the Ganges. Once the king’s son realised that someone had taken a bath in the Ganges before him. That, someone, was none other than the moneylender’s daughter in law. The king’s son, however, did not know it was her and he became curious. There were only five days left for the Kartik month to end and he was desperate to find out who the person was.

After finishing the bath, the daughter in law starts walking back to her house. The King’s son follows her. On hearing the footsteps the daughter in law starts walking faster. Her Payal comes off along the way. The King’s son discovers the Payal. He feels deeply attracted to the daughter in law. He thinks how beautiful will the woman be, whose Payal itself is so beautiful. In order to satiate his curiosity, he makes an announcement that the lady whose Payal he found at dawn should appear before him.

In response, the moneylender’s daughter in law sends a message saying she is the one who was taking a bath in the Ganga early in the morning. She further elaborates that if the King’s son wants to see her then he can come to the banks of Ganga river early in the morning. There were five more days left for Kartik month to end and she will be coming on all five days. The King’s son places a parrot on the banks of the river and tells the parrot to let him know once the daughter in law comes to take a bath. The next day, she goes to for her Snan and on the way prays to the Lord to protect her. She wishes for the King’s son to not wake up at all so that she can take a bath peacefully. The Lord grants her wish and the King’s son remains asleep.

Once the daughter in law finishes her Snan she requests the parrot to keep quiet and not inform the King’s son. She requests the parrot to protect her. The parrot agrees to help her. So, when the King’s son wakes up and does not find anybody he questions the parrot. The parrot told him no one had come. The disappointed King’s son decides to not sleep the next day at any cost. In order to do so, he cuts off his finger so that the pain does not let him sleep. The daughter in law again requests God to help her out. Granting her plea the King ends up sleeping again in spite of the pain. The daughter in law takes a bath in the Ganges and goes back without being seen by the King’s son.

When the prince wakes up in the morning, he questions the parrot about the daughter in laws whereabouts. One gain the parrot replies in the negative. The prince then decides to apply chilli in his eyes so that it prevents him from sleeping. The daughter in law once again requests God to protect her, he does so and the prince falls asleep. When he wakes up he questions the parrot and the parrot again says it has not seen anyone. Finally, he decides to get along his bedding so that there is no question of falling asleep. The daughter in law worships the Lord yet again and requests the parrot. They grant her wish and yet again the prince is prevented from seeing the daughter in law.

Finally, on the last day, the prince decides to sir right next to the wash area. However the cycle repeats once again, he goes off to sleep and does not see the lady. As it was the final day of Kartik month, the daughter in law asks the parrot to tell the prince to send her Payal back.

When the prince wakes up, the parrot reveals the entire story to the prince. The king’s son realises how religious the lady was and this makes him very sad. After some time, the king’s son gets leprosy. When the king finds out the reason for leprosy, he asks the Brahmins to remedy it. The Brahmin says that he should make the daughter-in-law of the moneylender his sister and take a bath with her bathed water, only then his leprosy can be cured. The moneylender agrees and the king’s son is healed. In this way, one can eliminate all problems in life by performing Snan and Puja for five days with reverence and Sattvik Bhava.

In this way, all of these are revered and respected. Annakoot and Govardhan Puja are done on the day of Kartik Shukla Paksha Pratipada as a way of paying our respects to nature.

Annakoot Mythological Story

A very ancient story on Govardhan Puja is heard and recited until today. This story is related to the childhood of Lord Shri Krishna. The story goes like this:

Devraj Indra had become very proud of his powers. Lord Krishna decided to create a Lila to end Indra’s pride. At that time, Lord Indra Dev was worshiped every year. This only inflates Lord Indra’s ego further. He starts believing he is the most important Devta that needs to be worshipped and the world cannot run without him. Lord Shri Krishna comprehends Indra’s emotion of being invincible.

The day on which Indra is worshiped, devotees make several dishes and decorate every nook and corner. Villagers prepare different types of food items for Lord Indra’s Puja. At this point, Lord Krishna in the incarnation of a child asks his mother why so much is done on that day. In response, Mata Yashoda tells them that today all the Brijwasis are making their best known dish for Lord Indra’s Puja, the Lord of all Devtas.

Krishna then questions Mata why is Lord India being worshipped. In response to this Mata explains that we get rain from Indra and from that we get food grains Our cows get food from this grain and they then provide us with milk. That is why we prepare Annakoot for Devraj Indra’s Puja. On this, Lord Krishna says that we should worship Govardhan Parvat. Our cows graze on that mountain and that is how they give us milk and butter. Therefore today we will all worship Govardhan Parvat. Indra does not even provide Darshan, but Govardhan Parvat always stays with us and is nearby.

On Krishna’s advice, all the villagers agree to worship Govardhan Parvat instead of Indra. When Devraj Indra comes to know that the villagers are not going to worship him and worship the mountain, he feels insulted. He starts torrential rain that day to teach the villagers a lesson. There is so much rain that the water gets everywhere. The village starts drowning. It felt like the end of the world. This scares all the Brijwasis and they start admonishing Lord Krishna. Next Shri Krishna lifts Govardhan mountain on his little finger.

He asks all the Brijwasis to come under that mountain. All the Brijwasis along with their cows and animals take shelter under that mountain. The heavy downpour of rain continues. In order to break Indra’s pride, Krishna controls the speed of rain with the Sudarshan Chakra. Sheshnag acts as a ridge and stops the water from coming towards the mountain. The rains continued for seven days. Finally, Indra realised his mistake. He goes to Brahma ji. Brahma ji tells Indra that the Krishna you are talking about is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Hearing this, Devraj Indra feels ashamed of his pride. He pauses and apologizes to Shri Krishna for his mistake. From that day onwards the villagers start worshiping the Govardhan Parvat and celebrate the festival of Annakoot.

Tripotsava Mythological Story

A very popular mythological story is associated with Tripurotsav. This story should be heard on this day. There was once a very mighty monster called Tripur. The monster did severe penance to conquer the Devtas. His penance was so strong that Tiloks started burning under its tenacity. No one could stand in front of him, let alone fight. His harsh austerity became the talk of the town and the power of Devtas over Trilok started wavering. The Devtas made several efforts to end Tripur’s harsh penance. The Devtas sent Apsaras to Tripur to distract him and trap him in Maya. But the monster was extremely focussed and nothing could deter him.

Pleased with the hard penance and austerity of the monster, Brahma ji appeared in front of him. Brahma Ji requested the monster to ask for a boon. The monster sought immortality as a boon from Brahma. Brahma ji told the monster that it is not possible to grant immortality, because whoever is born in this world is certain to die. On hearing this, the monster asked for another boon whereby he should not die at the hands of Devtas, or a man, or a woman or any other person. Brahma ji grants this boon to the monster.

Having sought the boon he wanted, monster Tripur becomes very egoistic and starts dictating everyone. He starts believing he is invincible. He throws the Devtas out from the Devlok and establishes his authority over Devlok. Tripura, with its power, starts to dominate the gods and humans and starts harassing everyone. Anarchy and disappointment spread everywhere. Finally, the Devtas reach out to Bhramaji and ask him to rescue them from Tripura.

Brahma ji informs the Devtas that no Devta or human can kill him, he can only be destroyed by Lord Shiva. The Devtas then go to Lord Mahadeva. They pray to him and ask him to end the atrocities of the Tripura monster. Lord Shiva kills Tripura monster which leads to the welfare of the Devtas and humans.

The death of the monster leads to peace and happiness. On this occasion, Devas and Danavs lit lamps to mark the victory of Lord Shiva. To celebrate this victory, the festival of Triporetsava is celebrated even today.

Tripuroutsava: Worship of Lord Shiva

Lord Shiva is specially worshiped on the day of Tripotsava. Just like how Lord Shiva killed a monster with a single arrow, similarly, he eliminates everyone’s sufferings in a single stroke. All kinds of diseases, pain and sorrows are removed by worshiping Shiva. Lighting lamps on this day at the time of moonrise and worshipping Lord Shiva also ends problems in life. One’s life is brightened by the same light.

Several stories related to Ashwini Purnima are found in our mythological scriptures. These stories are read and heard on the full moon day. Those observing a fast on Ashwini Purnima must also listen or read stories related to Ashwin Purnima on this day. One such story is as follows: –

During ancient times a religious money lender used to live in a city. He was very involved in various religious activities. The moneylender had two daughters. Just like the father both the girls too used to perform religious tasks. While the elder sister was very committed to religion, the younger one was not. Most of the time the younger daughter would not complete the task at hand. Similarly, when both of them observed the fast on full moon day, the elder one would do it by following all the rituals and the younger one would observe the fast properly because of her carelessness.

The moneylender got both his daughters married and both went to their in-laws. Both continued to fast there too. But while the elder observed a fast on the full moon day complete with all the rituals, the younger one still used to be careless. After some time both are blessed with a child. While the elder daughter’s child is hale and hearty the younger daughter’s child expires. This happens several times with the younger daughter.

The younger daughter consults several Brahmins to find out the reason behind the death of her children. All the Brahmins tell her that her children are dying as she has never observed the Ashwin Purnima fast properly by following all the rituals. They tell her to observe the Ashwin Purnima fast properly to ensure the longevity of her child.

The girl follows the instructions of the Bhramin and observes the fast of Ashwin Purnima properly by following all the necessary rituals. After some time she again gets blessed with a son. This son too however dies. The girl then covers her son with a cloth and lays him on a seat. She then calls her elder sister. She then asks her elder sister to sit on the same seat. As soon as the elder sister’s dress touches the child the child starts crying.

This annoys the elder sister. She tells the younger sister, “You wanted to blame me for the death of your child by making me sit on him?” To this, the younger sister offers clarification. The younger sister tells the elder sister “No, dear sister. My child was already dead. I called you here so that you can make him alive again. The good Karmas that you have built by observing the Ashwin Purnima Vrat has made my child alive again.” From that day onwards, along with the elder sister, the younger sister too observes the Ashwin Purnima fast properly and completely. Then lead a happy life.

Dhan Teres is celebrated on the day of Dhanvantari Jayanti

Dhanvantari ji’s birth time is celebrated as Dhanteras festival. The story of Dhanteras is as follows: -Once when Lord Vishnu decides to visit the earth, Goddess Lakshmi urges Lord Vishnu to take her along. Lord Vishnu agrees to take Lakshmiji on the condition that she will agree to whatever he asks of her. Lakshmi ji agrees to Vishnu jit. After some time Shri Vishnu ji halts Lakshmi ji at one place and asks her to wait there and not move till he returns back. Lord Vishnuji then proceeds southwards from there.

Goddess Lakshmi does not obey Lord Vishnu. Her curiosity gets the better of her and she starts following Lord Vishnu. After some time they come across a beautiful field with flowers. The flowers were so beautiful that Goddess Lakshmi plucks one flower and keeps it with her. Further ahead they come across a sugarcane field. Goddess Lakshmi then cuts a sugarcane and drinks its juice.

When Lord Vishnu returns and finds Goddess Lakshmi on the same path he gets angry. He gets upset with Goddess Lakshmi. As a punishment, he commands Goddess Lakshmi to live with the owner of the field for 12 years. Lord Vishnu then departs leaving Goddess Lakshmi at the field.

This makes Lakshmi ji sad but she follows Lord Vishnu ji’s instructions. She goes to the farmer’s house and asks for permission to work in her house. The farmer was poor but allowed Laxmi ji to live with him. With the passage of time and the grace of Lakshmi, the farmer becomes rich. 12 years pass. Lakshmi ji awaits her return to Vishnu ji. Vishnu ji too comes to fetch Lakshmi ji in the Avatar of a common man.

The farmer and his wife do not want Lakshmi ji to leave their place, because they feel that she has brought good luck to their family. Lord Vishnu tries to explain to the farmer that Lakshmi ji was staying with him to fulfill a punishment. The period of punishment is over and now he has come to take Lakshmi ji along.

The farmer however, is not persuaded and refuses to let go of Lakshmi ji. Lakshmi ji then comes up with a solution. She tells the farmer – “O farmer, if you want to keep me with you forever, then you clean the house tomorrow, light a lamp of ghee in the night and worship me. If you will follow this, I will stay at your house forever. Similarly, every year on the day of Teres, if you worship me I will stay in your house.” The farmer agrees to this proposition. He follows Lakshmi ji’s instructions and remains rich forever with the blessings of Lakshmi ji.
