Importance of Shravana Month – Shravana Month

Shravana month is also known as Masouttam. Each day of this month brings a new glory every morning. All the devotees can be seen worshipping Lord Shiva with immense faith and devotion. There have been a detailed description on the significance of the month of sawan in hinduism. It is believed that Lord Shiva has a great connection with shravana nakshatra and monday. This is a month of great devotion and faith in religion. Each date of this month has its own religious significance and is equally important for observing fast and performing puja.

According to Hindu Panchang, every month of the year is been devoted to some or the other god. Similarly, sawan month is also dedicated to Lord Shiva and worshipping him during this time is of great importance. Devotees bring water from various holy places and pour it on Lord Shiva’s idols in these temples. The month of monsoon is considered to be a symbol of devotion towards Lord Shiva.This is a month when the monsoon satisfies the thirst of earth by showering rain and provides a pleasurable environment. Similarly, devotees also get all their wishes fulfilled that help them to live a pleasurable and a prosperous life

Puja with Jalabhishek

It is believed that the glory of Lord Shiva can be seen during this month. Reciting Gayatri mantra, Mahamrityunjaya mantra, panchakshar etc gives beneficial results to the devotees. Shravan month begins when the shravan nakshatra forms a yoga with poornima tithi. During this month, devotees establish a shivalinga and perform jalabhishek with milk and gangajal. Lord Shiva is very fond of shivalinga jalabhishek and whoever does it, is blessed with all pleasures of life.

Jalabhishek of Shivalinga has been considered very fruitful. Many things are used to perform jalabhishek and each of it gives different results to the devotees. For instance; offering water gives rain and cold, abhishek with milk and ghee gives the pleasure of child, abhishek with sugarcane juice provides wealth and prosperity. Kushodk banishes the causes of disease, and honey provides fortune and financial stability.

Significance of jalabhishek of shivalinga

It is believed that a person attains results equivalent to that of ashwamedh yagna by visiting jyotirlinga during this month. There is a very popular legend in respect to the jalabhishek of Lord Shiva during this month. As per the legend, during the battle between Devas and Demons while churning the sea for amrit, a lot of poisonous substances started coming out of the sea. Due to these poisonous elements the whole universe started burning with immense heat leading to destruction in all the three worlds. To prevent the destruction, devas and demons went to Lord Shiva and requested him to save the mankind from this wrath.  Lord Shiva came forward and drank the whole poison to save the mankind

After drinking the poison Lord Shiva’s face and body started turning blue and his body’s temperature increased unbearably. Lord Shiva did this during the Sawan month. To calm his body temperature all the devas started pouring gangajal over his body. Since then the tradition of jalabhishek took place during the month of  Sawan month.  Water is poured on Lord Shiva during the whole Sawan month, especially on Mondays to get the his blessings.

Sravana Monday Fasting – Monday Fast in Shravan Month 2024

Lord Shiva is worshipped during the Sravana month. The importance of worshipping Lord Shiva in the month of Sawan has been mentioned in the Rigveda. A huge crowd can be seen on the first Monday of the Sawan month in temples devoted to Lord Shiva. The devotees of Lord Shiva worship him according to their faith and devotion. Everyone is involved in worshipping Lord Shiva. Devotees bring water filled pots from from far away places to do jalabhishek of the lord.

In 2024, the month of shravan will commence on 22th July. There are certain dates prescribed for Kanwariya, that is considered to be auspicious dates to begin their journey. Worshipping Lord Shiva and fasting on the mondays of the sawan month is said to be very fruitful

Puja for Sawan Mondays

This fast is commenced on the first Monday of Sawan. On this day, the head of the family should wake up early in the morning, clean the house, take a bath and sprinkle the ganga jal for the purity of the house. After that, the observer should establish the idol of Lord Shiva in the north east corner of the house. Lord Shiva is worshipped along with his entire family, including Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartikeya, Goddess Parvati, Nandi Deva and Nag Deva on this day.

Water, milk,curd, sugar, ghee, honey, panchamrit, clothes, sacred thread, sandalwood, rice, fruits, flowers, belpatra, datura, lotus, cloves, cardamom etc are offered to the idol of the lord while performing puja. On this day aarti is performed with dhoop and diya.

After performing the puja, the observer should have only one time meal. A person who fasts in the month of sawan gets relief from all sufferings and troubles in life. He attains happiness and prosperity. Sawan fasting is performed from the sunrise till the sunset. The observer should listen to Somwaar Vrat Katha and eat only after the sunset.

Significance of Sawan Mondays

It is believed that the month of Sawana is very dear to Lord Shiva. People observe fast on every monday of shravan month and worship Lord Shiva with enthusiasm and faith. According to the ancient belief, those who perform monday fasting is blessed with happiness and all the pleasures of the world. His all the desires are fulfilled. Donation and charity made on this day gives fruits equivalent to that of visiting Jyotirlinga.

People have their own purpose to observe this fast. Some observe it for long life, happy married life or for happiness and prosperity of children. Sawan Somvar Fast provides wealth, luxury and increase in generation. Lord Shiva is worshipped with Belpatra on this day as it is believed that Lord Shiva resides in the roots of bel patra. Hence, this puja provides the results equal to any pilgrimage visit.

Importance of Teej in Shravan Month

Teej is an important festival which is celebrated all over India. This festival is celebrated with lot of zeal and excitement in Northern India. The beginning of monsoon and Shravan month also mark the beginning of Teej festival. Teej festival is celebrated on Tritiya of Shukla Paksha during the Shravan month. This is also known as Hariyali Teej or Shravani Teej. This festival is mostly associated with women.

During this period, the whole earth flourishes. Nature seems to be beautiful and new plants and trees can be seen everywhere. People seem to be happy and excited. On this day, women sing songs and play on swings. The whole earth is drenched rainy water during this period.

During this period, green planets and trees can be seen everywhere. Maybe this is the reason why this festival is also known as Hariyali (Greenery) Teej. Women keep fasts on this day. Unmarried girls fast so that they can get a good husband in the future. On the other hand, married women fast and desire a happy married life. This festival is known as Hariyali Teej in  North East India. People are excited during this season and can be seen happy and playful all around.

Mythological importance of Teej

Teej also has a mythological importance. According to a famous legend, Goddess Parvati kept this fast in order to marry Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was impressed by her devotion and married Goddess Parvati. It is believed that after a period of 100 years on the day of Tritiya of Shukla Paksha in Shravan month, Goddess Parvati was able to meet Lord Shiva. Therefore, women worship Goddess Parvati on this day.

Teej worship and fast

Women keep a fast on this day and wish for a happy married life. An idol of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is worshipped for the whole night. New clothes are worn and the whole house is decorated. A jagran is also carried out at night. It is believed that women fasting on this day receive the blessings of Goddess Parvati and stay as happy as her for life.

Teej in various parts of India

Teej is celebrated all over India with a lot of zeal and excitement. It is celebrated in regions of North India by the name of Hariyali Teej. These include Bundelkhand, Jhansi, Rajasthan etc. It is celebrated by the name of Kajli Teej in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Banaras, Gorakhpur, Jaunpur, Sultanpur etc.

Effects of Teej on culture

The festival of Teej commences with the beginning of monsoon season. The sky can be seen covered with dark clouds all the time and the whole earth prospers because of the rain. Hariyali or Kajli Teej has a great impact on India’s culture. Mehndi and swings hold a great importance on the day of this festival. Young girls and married women decorate their hands with mehndi and play on swings while singing songs. Swings are tied on trees or terraces. A lot of fairs are also organized on the day of this festival.

A newly married girl is also called back to her home on this day. Married women are offered Sindhara by their in-laws. Sindhara includes clothes, ornaments, mehndi, sweets, objects related to make up etc.

Naag Panchami 2024 । Nag Panchami Festival

Naag Panchami festival is organized with zeal and excitement on the Panchami of Shukla Paksha during Shravan month. This month, Naag Panchami will be celebrated on 09 August, 2024, Naag Panchami is a very important Hindu festival. Worshipping a snake on this day hold great importance. People worshipping snakes on this day are believed to be

    1. blessed. A lot of different stories and legends are famous about snakes in the Hindu religion. Naag Deva is believed to protect a certain region.

A lot of legends are famous about Naag Panchami. Reading or listening to these legends is considered to be auspicious. Besides this, snakes should also be worshipped on this day. According to Hindu religion, snakes are associated with the Lords in numerous ways. For example, Lord Vishnu sleeps on a snake while Lord Shiva wears a snake in his neck.

The nine famous appearances of Naag Deva have been mentioned in the Naag Stotra. Worshipping these nine forms relieves a person of any fair of snakes and snake poison.

Naag Panchami Worship

A person should wake up early on this day and take a bath. A snake made out of cow dung should be kept at the main door or place of worship. Milk, Doob, Kusha, Sandalwood, Rice etc. should be used to worship Naag Deva at the main door. The idol should be offered sweets etc as Bhoga. It is believed that pouring milk on a snake on this day relieves a person from the fear of snakes. This festival is celebrated differently in different parts of India.

This festival is celebrated with a lot of excitement in Southern Maharashtra and West Bengal. Naag Devi Mansa is worshipped in parts of Bengal, Assam and Orissa during these days. Shesh Naag is worshipped in the temples of Kerala during this period. Digging the earth or sowing seeds is prohibited on this day.

Goddess Saraswati is worshipped on the day of Naag Panchami. Women in the house should wake up early, take a bath and worship Naag Deva. This brings prosperity, peace and relieves the family members of stress.

An Aarti should be carried out which should include sandalwood, haridra, churna, kumkum, sindoor, bel leaves, ornaments, garlands of flowers, dhoop, deep, ritu fruit, naivedya etc. It is believed that worshipping Naag Deva in this way fulfills all wishes and desires. Naag Deva is fond of fragrances. Hence, flowers with a nice fragrance and sandalwood should also be used in the worship.

Naag Deva should be called at the time of worship. Water, flowers and sandalwood should be offered to him. An idol of Naag Deva should be given a bath with milk, curd, honey, jaggery and ghrit. At last, water mixed with sandalwood should be poured on the idol.

Bhrigu Samhita – Saint Bhrigu – Rishi Bhrigu

Bhrigu Samhita was composed by Saint Bhrigu. He attained knowledge on the effects of speed of planets and constellations on the human life and earth, and proposed his principles. After researching and exploring the planets and planetary motions and their mutual relations he determined the system of reckoning in his composition.

According to the legends, when Bhrigu did not get place in the board of brahman rishi he got furious and went to Lord Vishnu to know the reason behind it. But, at that point of time Lord Vishnu was in deep meditation and did not realize the presence of Sage Bhrigu. Seeing this he felt humiliated and kicked on the chest of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu woke up and asked the sage, “ whether he is hurt anywhere on kicking him on his check”. Seeing the conduct of Lord Vishnu, Bhrigu got embarrassed and apologized for his mistake. However, Lord Vishnu forgives him, but goddess Lakshmi curses the sage that he will never be born in any brahmin family and will have to lead a life of poverty despite of being a great scholar and devotee of goddess Saraswati.

But, sage Bhrigu initiated a learning with his practice and penance, through which goddes Lakshmi was always present in the life of the learner. This composition was known as Bhrigu Samhita. It was initially written in Sanskrit, but was later translated into Tamil language. It is known as Bhrigu Nadi in South India. Bhrigu Samhita is considered a popular treatis and can be found in various parts of the country.

Bhrigu Samhita Views

Rishi Bhrigu is one of the 18 saints, who contributed in the evolution of astrology. The compositions by Rishi Bhrigu are some of the main writings in the field of astrology. It is believed that this scripture can be used only after performing a special kind of ceremonies and puja. After doing all this , the curiosity of the questioner is resolved when a page is opened from this scripture.

The person interpreting the results describes about the questioner’s place of birth , reason of his visit, etc .In this astrology the person is even told the names of his family members. There  are few copies of Bhrigu Samhita , one of which can be found in Sultanpur in Punjab.

Significance of Bhrigu Samhita

Saint Bhrigu , composed many scriptures. Some of the main compositions are Bhragu Smriti,Bhrigu Samhita Jyotish,Bhrigu Shilpa-Samhita,Bhrigu Sutras,Bhrigu Upanishads,Bhrigu Geeta etc.

Currently the copies that are available are in imperfect conditions. With this scripture , a person’s horoscope can be made for three lives. Each birth details are given in this scripture. It also predicts the future of those who are not even born yet. Bhrigu scripture is a huge treatise of astrology.

Worship of Goddess Gauri – Mangla Gauri Fast 2023 – Mangla Gauri Puja

Mangla Gauri worship is carried out every Tuesday in the Shravan month. This fast is considered to be extremely auspicious for married women. This year, this fast will begin from 23 July, 2024. Married women live a prosperous life by keeping this fast on Tuesdays. This fast is popularly known as Mangla Gauri fast. It is believed that Goddess Parvati offered austerities in order to marry Lord Shiva. In the same way, this fast provides longevity to a woman’s husband.

Mangla Gauri Story

A story is famous about Mangla Gauri fast. According to this story, a landlord named Dharmapal used to live with his wife in ancient times. Dharmapal was wealth and had a lot of property to his name. But, he was always worried as he didn’t have a child. He used to donate a lot of money and objects and used to worship the Lord to acquire blessings. Dharmapal was finally blessed with a son. But according to astrologer, his son did not have a long life. According to astrologers, his son would die because of a snake bite at the age of sixteen.

Dharmapal kept his faith in the Lord and married his son to a beautiful and obedient girl. This girl’s daughter used to fast for Mangla Gauri. As a result, the girl was blessed with her husband’s long life and Dharmapal’s son lived a long life.

Mangla Gauri Worship Procedure

Mangla Gauri worship should include fruits, garlands, Laddoo, Pan, Supari, Cardamom, Jeera, Coriander, Cloves, Saree, sixteen objects related to make-up, sixteen bangles and five different types of dry sweets. There should also be seven types of foods. This fast should begin on the first Tuesday of the Shravan month. A woman should wake up early on this day and take a bath. An idol or photo of Mangla Gauri should be placed on a wooden plank. It should be decorated with red clothes.

A lamp is made out of wheat flour. The flame should consist of four strips of 16 strands of thread. Lord Ganesha is worshipped first. Water, red thread, sindoor, sandalwood, supari, cloves, pan, rice, flowers, cardamom, bel leaves, fruits, sweets and money are offered to Lord Ganesha. The pot containing holy water should be worshipped next. It should be worshipped in the same way as Lord Ganesha is worshipped. The nine planets and sixteen goddesses are worshipped next. All the donated things are offered to a Brahmana.

The idol of Mangla Gauri is bathe in water, milk and curd. It is decorated with red clothes, sandalwood, sindoor, mehndi and kajal. The sixteen objects of make-up are used to decorate Mangla Gauri’s idol. Sixteen types of fruits, leaves and garlands are offered to the Goddess. The next step is to listen to Magla Gauri worship story. After listening to the story, the married woman should give sixteen laddoos to her mother-in-law and sister-in-law. The same is also offered to a Brahmana. Mangla Gauri’s idol is offered to a river on the next day of the last fast. This fast is kept in the same way for five years. After five years, Udyapan is also necessary. Goddess Gauri blesses everyone.

Kamika Ekadashi 2024 । Kamika Ekadashi Fast

Kamika Ekadashi is celebrated on the day of Ekadashi during the Krishna Paksha of Shravan month. This year, Kamika Ekadashi will be celebrated on 31 July 2024. Kamika Ekadashi is the best period for worshipping Lord Vishnu. Keeping a fast on this day frees a person from sins and problems. Ekadashi eradicates all problems and fulfills all desires. Kamika Ekadashi is considered to be the best time for worshipping Lord Vishnu. It is believed that the story about this Ekadashi was told by Lord Krishna to Yudhishtir. Prior to this, it was told by Saint Vashishta to King Dilip, who attained salvation.

Kamika Ekadashi Story

In ancient times, there was a landlord in a village. Once this landlord had a fight with a Brahmana and killed him out of anger. The landlord wanted to repent by being a part of the Brahmana’s cremation rituals, but was denied the permission. Hence, he was cursed with a Brahmana’s killing. The landlord asked a saint if he could get rid of the sin. The saint advised him to keep a fast on Kamika Ekadashi. The landlord kept a fast in the same way as he was told by the saint. At night, the landlord was sleeping besides the Lord’s idol. Lord Vishnu appeared in his dream and freed him of his sins. He was finally forgiven by the Lord.

Kamika Ekadashi Worship

On the day of Ekadashi, a person should take a bath early in the morning followed by a prayer dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The person should not consume water during the whole day and should keep on worshipping Lord Vishnu. Panchamrit, flowers, fruits, milk and sesame seeds should also be offered to Lord Vishnu. Feeding a Brahmana and giving him some money holds immense importance on the day of Kamika Ekadashi. A person keeping this fast gets whatever he desires.

Kamika Ekadashi Importance

Kamika Ekadashi gives auspicious results. A person worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day is blessed. Taking baths in places of religious pilgrimage is also considered to be important on this day. Kamika Ekadashi is as auspicious as Ashwamedha yagya. A person should take a bath early morning and offer various delights and delicacies to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu’s aarti should include dhoop, lamps, sandalwood etc.

Worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day also frees a person from Pithru dosha. A person is able to free himself of material desires and attains salvation. It is believed that a person worshipping Lord Vishnu during Shravan month is blessed and gets equivalent results as worshipping snakes and gandharva. Lord Vishnu is most impressed when he is worshipped with Tulsi leaves. A person worshipping Lord Vishnu with Tulsi leaves is able to free himself of all sins.

Kamika Ekadashi worship gives results equivalent to yagyas. Lord Vishnu is worshipped on Kamika Ekadashi. A person worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day gets auspicious results.

Guru Purnima 2024 | Guru Purnima Festival

Ashadh Maas Poornima is also known as Guru Poornima, which makes the occasion very important in terms of wisdom and knowledge provided by Gurus. In 2024, Guru Poornima will be celebrated on 21 July. The festival of Guru Purnima describes the importance of knowledge and teacher in the life of a person since ancient times. Gurus come before God in Hindu tradition. That is why it is said, “ Hari Ruthe Guru Thor Hai, Guru Ruthe Nahi Thor”. Teachers or Gurus all over India are worshipped on this auspicious day. Worshipping teacher increases the wisdom, knowledge, devotion and patience in an individual.

Guru Poornima is also known as Vyas Purnima because the Guru of Lord Krishna and the creator of Mahabharat, Vyas was born on this day. He was a scholar and a composer of  various Vedas due to which he was known by the name of Ved Vyas.

Guru Purnima – A path to wisdom

According to scriptures, the meaning of Guru is a person who evades darkness and provides enlightenment of knowledge. He takes us from darkness to light. There are many shlokas describing the glory of Gurus since ancient times. A person is able to see god with the blessing of a Guru.

In India, the festival of Guru Poornima is celebrated with full enthusiasm and faith. This tradition depicts the significance of respecting a guru who teaches and preaches us through all odds of life. Students in ancient times used to live in the Ashram and attain their education from their guru. They used to have a feeling of sacrificing anything in honor of their guru. This fact is evident with the incident of Eklavya where he gave his thumb to his guru in the form of Dakshina without giving it a second thought.

A person is able to leave his desires and meet the almighty god under the shelter of a guru. A guru brings us closer to our religion and provides spiritual growth. One can witness god only with the blessing of a guru. In this context,  it is said, “ Guru Govinddau Khade Kake Langu Payam. Balihari Guru Aapki, Jo Govind Diyo Bataya”

Significance of Guru Purnima

Guru is given a higher position and is worshipped before God, because of his qualities and qualification. Guru is called Brahma and is considered to another form of Lord Shiva. He forgives his students for all sins and enlightens them towards the right path. His guidance is very important to attain spiritual peace, religious knowledge, and worldly conduct.  A guru is not only a teacher but also a person who can guide an individual with the path of life to come out of his troubles and sufferings.

A guru enlightens a person with all kind of wisdom and knowledge. Even today, a teacher is worshipped on the occasion of Guru Purnima in various schools and education institutes. Special Pujas are organized in the honor of teachers, holy bath, bhandaras and fairs are also conducted to celebrate this day.

Apparently, every person who teaches us something attains a position of a guru in our life. We should respect all those people who have played an important role in our overall personality development and have taught us some of the other useful thing.

Ashadh Maas Shukla Purnima will be celebrated as Guru Purnima or Vyas Purnima. People offer fruits, clothes, etc to their teachers in the form of gifts or Guru Dakshina. Special pujas are performed on this day since ancient times.

Ten Mahavidyas – Ten Mahavidya Sadhana – Shakti Puja

Ten Mahavidyas are considered to be the manifestations of Goddess Durga. Each manifestation eradicates the problems of human being on earth in its own unique way. All the ten mahavidyas have special significance in activities related to occult, tantra and sadhana. They are as follows:

Goddess Kali is one of the manifestation among ten mahavidyas. She is another form of shakti. It is believed that goddess durga incarnated as goddess Kali for the destruction of devils and to protect and establish dharma in the world. She is worshipped all around the country. Though Devi Kali’s appearance is dark and terrifying but she ends all fears of her devotees. Goddess Kali  has appeared in a lot of different incarnations to free this world from all problems and sins. She helps in the development of this whole world. Goddess Kali is related to Kaal or Time. She has been considered to be associated with Tantra sadhana and Tantriks also worship her. She is known as Bhavatarni who takes care of the whole universe.

Goddess Tara

Out of all the ten mahavidyas, Goddess Tara is worshipped by tantriks to get fruitful of their Tantra sadhana. She is considered to be the goddess of adi shakti. Goddess Tara tends to appear to help her devotees, when a person loses hope and is not able to see any way out of his problems When a person is not able to see any way out of his problems. Ugra tara, Neel Saraswati and Ekajata are the manifestations of devi Tara only. She is considered to be the destructor of demons and giver of prosperity and salvation. She is creator of universe. It is believed that the universe is created on the basis of zero and goddess Tara resides in the zero itself. She is the idol of prosperity and beauty who decides the time salvation of each creature on earth.

Goddess Lalita

Goddess Lalita has a very bright and radiant appearance. According to Kalika Purana, the goddess has two arms and fair complexion. She sits on a lotus. Prosperity is derived from the worship of Goddess Lalita. As per the the tradition of south India, goddess lalita has been assigned the position of Chandi, the who is destructive.

Lalitopakhyana, Lalita Sahasranama, Lalita Trishati path are recited for her worshipping. She is known as one of the incarnation of goddess Durga.

Goddess Bhuvaneshwari

Goddess Bhuvaneswari is one of the Ten Mahavidyas and is an incarnation of Goddess Shakti. She is the ruler and the goddess of universe. Gayatri worship is implicit in the sense of goddess Bhuvaneshwari. Goddess Bhuvaneshwari is depicted as having one face and four hands, two of which bless the devotees while the other two holds the noose and angusham. It is believed that the ultimate god is Bhuvaneshwari. She has a wheatish complexion and her fingernail represents the entire universe. She carries a red golden radiance similar to that of a Sun. A person who chants goddess Bhuvaneswari’s mantras is blessed with good results.

The beej mantra is considered to be very powerful and giver of wishes. Chanting her mool mantra and panchakshari mantra blesses a person with all kind of worldly pleasures in life.

Tripura Bhairavi

She is the goddess of tantra sadhana and the most terrifying manifestation of goddess Durga.

Goddess Bhairavi appears in other 13 different forms. She is mother of spiritual seeker. Goddess Bhairavi can be seen wearing a skull garland in her neck.  Her right hands gesture abhaya mudra and vara mudra which blesses the devotees. She wears red coloured clothes, holding a book in one hand. Devotees should use red cloth while worshipping the goddess

Goddess Chinnamastika

Chhinnamastika Mata is considered to be the sixth manifestation out of the ten mahavidyas. She is also worshiped as goddess Chintapurni. This form of goddess is described in detail in various hindu scriptures such as Markandeya Purana and Shiva Purana. According to the scriptures, Ma Chandi incarnated as goddess Chinnamastika to kill the demons. She was praised in all the three worlds for destroying the demons. But, the thirst for blood of her helpers was not satisfied. At that time goddess Chinnamastika chopped her head and served them to satisfy their thirst. Since then she is known by the name of Chinnamastika.

Dhumavati

Dhumavati is the goddess with terrifying appearance. She is associated with mortality, death and everything that is inauspicious. Despite of her scary looks,. she always blessed the devotees and fulfilled their wishes. Dhumavati is the combined power of Saint Durvasa, Bhrigu and Parshuram. Due to her involvement in the conflicts related to the creation of universe, she is also known as Kalahpriya. Chaumasa is an auspicious and prime time to worship the goddess. She gives relief from all kinds of suffering and  trouble of life.

Goddess Baglamukhi

Goddess Bagalamukhi is the eighth Mahavidya out of ten Mahavidyas. She is the goddess of immense power and is worshipped to attain victory over enemies, arguments etc. Goddess Bagalamukhi is also known as Pitambara. Yellow coloured materials are used for her puja as she is fond of yellow colour. Goddess Bagalamukhi has a yellow complexion like a gold and thus a person should wear yellow coloured clothes while worshipping her. Goddess Bagalamukhi relieves a person from the enemies and negative energies. Goddess Bagalamukhi can be seen riding a beautiful chariot embedded with gemstones and destroys enemies.

Goddess Matangi

Goddess Matangi is the ninth manifestation of ten mahavidyas. She is the goddess of speech and music. She carries the power of entire universe. The goddess blesses her devotees with blissful and prosperous married life. Worshipping her brings harmony and cordiality at home.

She gives relief from all kind of fears. She is also known as Ucchishta Chandalini and Pishachini. She is also worshipped in other forms: Ucchishta Chandalini, Rajamathangi, Sumukhi, Vaishya Matangi, Karna Mangi etc. She is the goddess of south and west.

Goddess Kamla

Goddess Kamla has a golden skin and is seated on a beautiful lotus. She is accompanied by two huge elephants who pour jars of nectar on her. Goddess Kamla is giver of wealth and happiness. By worshipping her one can attain immense wealth and wisdom. She is goddess of fortune and those who want to attain all kind of worldly pleasures must worship her.

Amavasya Tharpanam – Importance of Amavasya Tharpanam

Saints, sages and other experts have always stressed on the importance of Amavasya tharpanam. In simple terms, tharpanam usually means offering something to one’s ancestral beings so as to satisfy them. Many believe that tharpanam is as important as any other worship procedure. Tharpanam which is carried out on the day of Amavasya is known as Amavasya tharpanam.

In case you already know the traditional way of doing tharpanam along with the traditional mantras or if you are a man of family traditions who believes in certain practices carried out by your family members, you should follow your traditional practices. On the other hand, if you are not sure about how to do tharpanam in order to satisfy your dead ancestors, here is an easy way to do so. Amavasya tharpanam done in this way consists of two different parts. One is pitru tharpanam and the other one is karunya tharpanam.

According to the first method, one needs to pay many spiritual debts everyday. One such debt is what we have to pay to our ancestors. Pitru tharpanam done on the day of Amavasya is one such way to pay this debt. This worship procedure does not take much time and can be done within ten minutes or so.

Going by the names, Pitru Tharpanam means to satisfy one’s ancestors. In this part of tharpanam, we offer tharpanam to 12 of our recently departed ancestors. These may be your parents, grandparents and so on. People in your parental lines are the only ones who are included in this tharpanam. So, uncles, aunts or cousins are excluded from Pitru tharpanam worship. They are however included when we perform karunya tharpanam.

The second part of tharpanam is known as Karunya tharpanam. In this procedure we include departed relatives, friends, pets, creatures, animals and other departed beings.

Things needed for Amavasya tharpanam

  • A mat to sit on made of darbha grass. A wooden plank or clean cloth made of natural fibers.
  • A clean plate made of wood, copper, brass or silver. Glass and steel should not be used.
  • Clean water in a glass made of wood, copper, brass or silver. You may also keep some water in an extra bowl.
  • Sesame seeds. Use black sesame seeds if you are a male and white sesame seeds if you are a female.
  • Darbha grass.
  • Pavitram made of darbha grass to be worn in the ring finger of the right hand.

 

Procedure to offer Amavasya tharpanam

  • Light at least two oil or ghee lamps.
  • Sit on a mat facing east.
  • Pray to lord Ganesha followed by lord Sun. Lord Sun is considered to be the lord of ancestral beings.
  • Place the plate in front of you and arrange the Tharpanam grid. The first three block of the grid should be offered to paternal male ancestors. The next three should be offered to paternal female ancestors. Blocks seven to nine should be offered to maternal male ancestors. The last three blocks should be offered to maternal female ancestors.
  • Place strips of darbha grass in each block of the grid.
  • From the bottom of your heart, request pitru ancestral beings to be present in the tharpanam grid and accept your humble offerings.
