Guru Nanak Dev’s birthday is celebrated as Guru Nanak Jayanti. Guru Nanak Dev was the first Guru of the Sikhs. He was born in a place named Talwandi Raibhoya (Nankana Saheb). Guru Nanak Jayanti is also known as Prakash Utsav. It is celebrated on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima. Sikhs celebrate this day with a lot of zeal and excitement. Guru Nanak Dev was a neutral Guru. He learned all the teachings of different Gurus and Sants in the Guru Grantha Sahib and preached everyone in the same manner. He spent his whole life in servicing the needy.

Biography

Guru Nanak Dev was born during the darkest times in the history of our country. Superstitions and cruelty were on an all time high during that period. Guru Nanak Dev was a social worker, Saint and even a poet. Guru Nanak Dev’s father was Baba Kaluchandra Bedi and mother was Tripta ji. Guru Nanak Dev was very spiritual since childhood. Priests and other religious people were always attracted by his intelligence. He was married to Sulakshana and has two sons. But, he was always involved in social service.

Some of his teachings were as follows : God is one, He resides everywhere and in everything, A person worshipping God does not fear anything, A person should be honest and hard working, Men and Women are equal, Lust and Greed are bad things etc. He spent his whole life teaching people about various things and died in the year 1539 at the age of 70.

The principles and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev are followed by a lot of people even today. He explianed that God is only one and we are all his children. He said that no one can be different from each other as we are the children of the one same person. His teachings which were given 500 years ago are still popular among the people. Guru Nanak Dev established Sikh religion and worked for the betterment of the whole mankind. He gave rise to a sense of unity and love among the people.

Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated with a lot of excitement and devotion. It is celebrated just like any other festival. Gurudwaras can be seen crowded with devotees who offer their prayers and worship Guru Nanak Dev. Many rallies are also organized. Scens of Guru Nanak Dev’s life are also depicted in these rallies which comprise of elephants, horses etc. Food arrangements are also made in the Gurudwaras along with Kirtan, Satsang etc.
