Life of Rama in Brief

The each time we read the life of Rama, there is always something new to learn from it. He is a real symbol of religion and perfection. In the modern era, he is known to be the biggest life source. Come let us try to learn something new from his life.


Lord Ram was born on Navami of Chaitra Shukla Paksha. According to Ramayan, king Dasharatha had 4 sons : Rama, Bharat, Lakshman and Shatrughna. All the four of them had their education from the Ashram of Rishi Vishwamitra.


Swayamvar of lord Ram

During this time, the atrocities of demons had begun in the North India because of which Muni Vishwamitra was not able to perform Hawan. When Rishi came to know that lord Hari had descended on earth in form of Ram, son of Dasharatha, he reached Ayodhya. He appealed Dasharatha to take Ram along with him for the suppression of demons.


Rishi completed his Yagya by the help of Ram and Lakshman. Out of the devils who were killed included Subahu and the one named Mareech was thrown hundred yards far in a sea on getting hurt by the arrows of lord Ram. While Ram and Lakshman were staying in the Ashram of Rishi Vishwamitra, Dhanu Yajaya was organised at Mithila. Muni was invited in the Hawan, so, he toke Ram and Lakshman along with him to Mithila.


Janak, the ruler of Mithila, had invited all the kings of nation and foreign in the Swayamvar of his daughter, Sita. Powerful kings of demon like Ravana and Banasur had also arrived their but they returned back, considering themselves incapable for the task.


Other kings also tried but they were not successful. Ram easily broke the bow and chose Sita. An invitation was send to Ayodhya on marriage. Dasharatha along with his 4 sons reached Mithila with the procession. after the completion of marriage, all of them returned to Ayodhya.


King Dasharatha’s Promise to Kaikeyi

As Dasharatha was getting old, he decided to crown Ram as the prince. By coincidence, Kaikeyi’s son Bharat and Sumitra’s Son Shatrughna had gone to there maternal place. Then Manthra, servant of Kaikeyi, came to know about this news. So, Manthara informed Kaikeyi.


At the staring, Kaikeyi agreed that out of all the sons of King, the eldest one is the owner of the kingdom. This is the tradition of the family. But, Manthara misguided her that there was some conspiracy as the organisation of such a great thing was happening in the absence of Bharat. So, Kaikeyi decided to fail this occasion and went into the anger room. Subsequently, she asked for the two promises that Dasharatha had to give her.


Exile of Rama

Kaikeyi asked for the exile of Ram and said to make Bharat the prince of Ayodhya. According to the first one, Ram had left for the forest along with Sita and Lakshman. After few days, Dasharatha tied in the sorrow of separation from Ram. Then, Bharat was called back and given the ownership of kingdom. bharat refused to become the ruler and went to Chitrakut to bring back Ram.


But, Ram refused to return back. On Bharat’s request, lord Ram gave his footers. bharat kept them on the throne and looked after the works of kingdom. Leaving from Chitrakut, Ram moved in the south direction.


While these people where residing in Panchwati, sister of Ravan i.e. Surpanakha came there in a form of a beautiful lady. Fascinated by Ram, she kept a proposal of marriage. When Ram refused for marriage, Surpanakha came into her terrifying looks. By the indications from Ram, Lakshman had cut her nose. Ashamed Surpanakha reached to her brothers Khar and Dushan, and asked them to fight against Ram.


Khar and Dushan attacke on Ram with their army but, all were killed. Then Surpanakha went to Ravan and narrated her the whole story. Ravan kidnapped Sita with the help of demon Mareech. As a result Ram had to fight with Ravan.


Ram Ravan War

In this situation, Ram took the help of monkeys of Kishkindha and attacked Ravan. Lord Hanuman played a signifiacant role in this war. Vibhisan, brother of Ravan, also supported Ram in this war. Ram had send a monkey named Angad to Ram as a messenger for the last warning to return Sita.


Ravan refused to return Sita witha pride of his power. As a result, war had begun between the army of Ravan and Ram. Ravan and his brother and sons were killed in this big war. Subsequently, Vibhisan was mande the king of Lanka and Ram made Sita free. Then, Ram , Sita and Lakshman returned Ayodhya. Ram’s coronation was performed.
