Planets on account of their incessant movement get into certain state of existence called avasthas. Depending on their position in the chart and the other conditions, Indian astrology classifies the conditions of the planets into 5 different sets of avasthas. They are:

It is a very detailed and complicated study as to how a planet in each of the 5 types of
sets of avasthas behaves. Based on that the results given by each planet for each type
of the sets of avasthas is taken into consideration while giving predictions.
Fundamentally 3 avasthas are taken into consideration

  • Baladi Avasthas - deals with the physical state of body systems
  • Sayanadi Avasthas - deals with the awareness of Mind
  • deeptadi Avasthas - deals with the light of of the soul

Baladi

The Drekkana division of the zodiac sign helps to determine the baladi avasthas. The three drekannas of a rasi are divided mainly into -

  • Child age
  • Middle age
  • Old age

Since baladi avasthas deal with the physical body, they are reckoned in the opposite order for even signs—with the first drekkana showing old age.

The baladi avasthas depend on the drekkana division. The shastamsa division (half of drekanna) can also be used. Here, there are 6 states from childhood to death. In order, Sun, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Moon and Saturn are strong in each of the 6 shastamsas. Mercury is strong everywhere.
The Sub set of the Baladi Avasthas are

  • Bala : This Avastha ranges from 0 - 6 degrees in odd signs and 24 - 30 degrees for even signs. It means to be infant and the results are quarter. The Sun and Mars give best results as children,
  • Kumara : This Avastha ranges from 6-12 degrees in odd signs and 18-24 degrees for even signs. It means to be Adolescent and the results are half.
  • Yuva : This Avastha ranges from 12 - 18 degrees in odd signs and 12 - 18 degrees for even signs. It means to be Youth and the results are Full. Venus and Jupiter gives best in the in middle age
  • Vriddh : This Avastha ranges from 18 - 24 degrees in odd signs and 6 - 12 degrees for even signs. It means to be infant and the results are Some. and Moon and Saturn gives the best results in old age
  • Mrita :This Avastha ranges from 24 - 30 degrees in odd signs and  0- 6 degrees for even signs. It means to be dead and the results are None.

Mercury, the eternal adolescent represents the spirit of man. He rules the natural upachayas of nature (3rd and 6th houses). He is always enthusiastic, full of hope and high spirited. As a result is strong in all three ages. A strong Ascendant shows someone full of energy, while a strong Saturn would show a strong excretory system.
