Vaastu Shastra is a set of principles used for construction and for architectural purposes. It aims at establishing a balance between form and energy to create harmonious conditions for the people living inside a building. Vaastu Shastra and its basic elements
As we all know Vaastu Shastra is based on certain principles and these principles involve mathematical calculations. Vaastu shastra is also known as Sthapatya Veda. In sanskrit, it means “dwelling”.
It is a form of designing architecture which takes into consideration the radiations from Sun, other planets and various ground forces. A good use of Vaastu Shastra attracts stability, prosperity, happiness and mental peace for the occupants and for the owners of the building.
Vaastu is primarily the science of directions which combines all the five elements of nature called "Paanchbhootas" and balance them with man and material. These five elements are fire, air, space, water and earth.
It takes advantages of all these five elements by combining them in an effective order to create a congenial living and working environment. It is the way which gives enhanced health, wealth, prosperity and happiness to people living or working inside a construction.
Vaastu principles for bedroom in a residential planning
A bedroom is an extremely important place in a house since it is a private place where a person feels relaxed and comfortable. Vaastu shastra has laid down various principles for designing a bedroom in a house keeping in mind the utility of this place. Bedroom in a house can be of three types i.e master bedroom, guest bedroom and kid’s bedroom.
According to the Vaastu shastra, main bedroom or a master bedroom should be located in south or south-western direction of a house.
Whereas, a guest bedroom should be in the north-western direction because of the simple fact that this direction represents the flow of air due to which guests who sleeps in this bedroom will not stay for long time.
The bedroom of kids should always be located in the western or eastern direction of the house as it helps the child to live a healthy and intellectual childhood.
The bedrooms constructed in a square or rectangular shape are beneficial in every way and also help in better arrangements of furniture.
Vaastu principles for a living room in a residential planning
Living room is also known as hall, sitting room, main room, drawing room etc. It is basically the central space of the house where everyone gathers and enjoy their time together.
According to the Vaastu shastra principles, it is always better to construct a living room in north-eastern corner of the house. If a house is constructed facing towards west, then the living room must be in the north-western corner of the house.
Colour also plays an important role in enhancing the mood and ambience of a room. Light shades such as yellow, green, white are considered best for a living room as they help to brighten up the mood and spread a warm feeling.
To develop strength and positivity among the family members, the head of the family and his spouse must sit in the south-western corner of the living room and should face towards north-east or east while having any family discussions or normal conversations.
Vaastu principles for a dining room in a residential planning
Dining room is a very important part of the house since it is a place where all the family members gather to eat food and chat on various issues. Thus, a Vaastu based dining room has positive effects on the owner and other family members of the house. According to Vaastu Shastra, it is good to have a separate room for eating rather than using other rooms of the house.
Although, western portion of the house is an ideal location for the construction of a dining room, east and south are also preferred as alternatives.
Dining table should be placed in the centre of the room at such a position that none of the member of the family should face towards south while eating. It can create restlessness. Irregular shaped dining tables such as round, oval, hexagon etc should be avoided in a dining areas as it creates negative flow of energies.
As far as colours are concerned, orange and pink are considered ideal for a dining room, but one can also use yellow, saffron or green as these colours make the environment happy and enjoyable.
Paintings of food related objects or nature portraits can make the atmosphere of a dining room happy and enjoyable.
Vaastu principles for kitchen in a residential planning
Kitchen has always been an important part of a house. It is a place where healthy food for the family is prepared. A kitchen designed according to Vaastu Shastra attracts health and happiness and helps the people of the house to live a prosperous life.
Thus, it is essential to have a compact and safe place for the construction of a kitchen.
According to Vaastu Shastra, south-eastern direction is the abode of lord of fire and hence is considered to be an ideal location to construct a kitchen. However, north-eastern direction should be totally avoided.
One of the basic principle of Vaastu denotes that water and fire should not be aligned in one row. This is also applicable in the construction of a kitchen. Cooking stove and washing sink should not be aligned in the same row and should be kept away from each other as fire and water do not go together.
Green is considered an ideal colour for a kitchen as it helps to improve appetite of family members.
Vaastu principles for bathroom and toilet in residential planning
Toilets and bathrooms are an integral part of the house. It is a personal place where one takes bath, uses the water closet and washbasin for multiple purposes. Thus, a bathroom constructed in wrong direction of the house leads to severe problems related to health and finance.
According to Vaastu Shastra, the bathroom direction, fittings, colors of the walls should all be taken into consideration while designing a bathroom. Bathrooms or toilets should be constructed in the north-western or western part of the house.
The flooring of the bathroom should be chosen very carefully. Marble or granite tiles should not be used for flooring in a bathroom. Since, these are extremely slippery when are wet.
The wash-basin, bath tubs and shower area should be in north-east, north or eastern side of the room.
Water closet should be placed in the west, south or north-west in a bathroom and the person sitting on it should face towards north or south.
One can use any colour of his choice on bathroom walls other than red or black colour. However, light shades are more preferable to make the bathroom look bright and spacious.
