Terminologies used in Ashtak Varga

Ashtak Varga has played an important role in astrology since ancient times. In order to understand the principles of Ashtak Varga, we need to understand the meaning of different terminologies used in Ashtak Varga. Primary words in Ashtak Varga include Bindu, Rekha, Kakshya, Prastarak, Bhinna Ashtak, Sarva Ashtak and Samudaya Ashtak Varga. We will explain all these terminologies in this article.

Bindu

All the seven planets including Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and Ascendant emit positive energies. A planet emits positive energy in certain places while negative energy in other places. If the energy is positive, it is known as Bindu. In Northern India, auspicious energy is Bindu, while inauspicious energy is called Rekha. On the other hand, In Southern India, positive energy is known as Rekha.

Kakshya

Kakshya is a specific part of a sign. Each Kakshya has a specific planet as its Lord. Ruling planets of Kakshya are Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon and Ascendant. A sign consists of 30 degrees. Dividing it in eight different parts produces eight Kakshyas. One Kakshya is equal to 3 degree 45 minutes. Each Kakshya gives results according to its position in a specific house.

Prastarak Chakra

In Prastarak Chakra, Bindu provided by eight Kakshyas in twelve houses are explained in a tabular form. A different Prastarak Chakra is created for every planet.

Bhinna Ashtak

Yogas of Bindu provided by planets in a Prastarak Chakra are explained in a Janma Kundali. This way, each planet has its own Varga according to the Prastarak Chakra. In other words, every planet has its own Bhinna Ashtak Varga.

Sarva Ashtak

Sarva Ashtak is the sum of all auspicious points or Bindu in the twelve houses of a Kundali. Bindu provided by every planet in its Bhinna Ashtak Varga are added into one common Varga. This is known as Sarva Ashtak. This is also known as Samudaya Varga. However, there is one difference. At times, Sarva Ashtak Varga can be formed even without Bhinna Ashtak Varga. This is known as Samudaya Ashtak Varga.

Rekha Sarva Ashtak Varga

Every house receives eight types of energies from seven planets and Ascendant. Hence, every house consists of 56 points. If auspicious points are subtracted from 56, we get a total of inauspicious points for that house. These are known as Rekha in Northern India.
