Madhvacharya Jayanti, Know About Madhvacharya Dvaita Philosophy

Madhavacharya’s time period is said to be from 1199 to 1317. He was born in South India.
Madhavacharya was a great visionary and philosopher. He provided the basis for Dwetvwad. Madhavacharya Ji understood the diverse ideologies of Sanatan Dharma and also tried to spread those ideas amongst people. Madhavacharya has explained the Upanishads and Vedas very well. He founded many monasteries in India. These places are still considered very famous and sacred. Many people were initiated into the religion. Madhavacharya ji is considered to be an Avatar of Vayudev. Madhavacharya has given very detailed and interesting interpretations of Brahmasutras.

Madhvacharya Life Introduction

Madhvacharya was born in a village called Pajak near a place called Udupi Shivalli in Kannada district of South India. He had studied the Vedas and Vedangas at a very young age and became well-versed with the same. He adopted Sanyas. During his retirement and education, he also received education from the Acharya named Achutapakshacharya.

What is Dvaita?

Dwetwad is an important view of the philosophical ideology of “Vedanta”. Madhavacharya was responsible for bringing this concept in front of everyone. Dwetwad as its name suggests means acceptance of more than one opinion. According to Dwetwad, the existence of nature, life and God is acceptable. According to Madhavacharya the feeling of dissatisfaction stems from confusion. In this opinion, several interpretations were drawn from different philosophies.

Dwetwad is one of the most popular ideologies in philosophy. As per this ideology, God exists everywhere. The entire responsibility of the creation and governance of the world lies squarely on God’s shoulders. Dwetwadis believe that three things exist in this world – God, nature and living beings. All three are regular. While nature and living beings undergo change God does not change. God is eternal. God is virtuous and has qualities like kindness, justice, strength, etc.

Madhvacharya was a propagator of Dwetwad

Dwetwad depicts the worship of God. Dwetwad was also opposed. On one hand, it is said that there is no such attribute in God that can be called wrong or meaningless but on the other hand it is believed that certain actions make good happy and vice versa. Isn’t being unhappy a negative trait? This has led to disputes. Similar anti-religious principles have been stated in (Dvaita)Dwetwad.

Madhvacharya was the founder of Dwetwad. He is also known as Anandatirtha. He still has many followers in the state of Karnataka. During his lifetime, Madhvacharya was said to be the incarnation of “Vayu Dev” during his lifetime. His followers and disciples worshipped him in this form.

According to Madhvacharya, Lord Vishnu is the supreme God. He considers Brahma present in the Upanishads as a personal God. Ramanuji, too, had accepted this view before Madhvacharya propagated the same. Madhavacharya believed in the existence of three elements, God, soul and nature. According to him, God is the essence of all Siddhis. He has no form and is the conceiver of the universe. God did not create the world by dividing himself nor in any other way.

Madhavacharya’s Reform Work

Madhvacharya not only focussed on religious works but he also brought reforms in society. When the era of the religious movement started in India, one of the most important philosophers at that time was Madhavacharya. It was because of his reforms he was called by names like Purna Pragya and Anandatirtha.

He spread knowledge by establishing temples and monasteries. He also brought an end to animal sacrifice. Madhavacharya composed many texts, in his works, he tried to challenge various forms of hypocrisies. He propagated devotion to God and showed the right path to millions. Madhavacharya wrote about 30 to 37 texts to express his thoughts.

Why did Madhvacharya and Achutha Prakash Acharya dispute?

Achyutapaksharya was a supporter of Advaitaism. Madhavacharya learned many things from him because he was Madhavacharya’s initiation Guru. However, they disagreed on certain points. Madhavacharya always placed his perspective in front of his Guru. As Mashavacharya did not support everything that his Guru said he was misunderstood by his Guru. The argument between the teacher and the disciple remained. Eventually, Madhavacharya formed his own separate opinion known as “Dvaita Darshan”.

According to him, Vishnu is the supreme God and the highest form of divinity. Being the supreme devotee of Shri Vishnu, Madhavacharya himself used to wear Lord Vishnu’s ornaments. Madhavacharya ji started the practice of decorating his organs with symbols of conch, Chakra, mace and Padma. His idea received further support. He traveled around the country. He had many followers. He is also credited for establishing the temple of Shri Krishna in Udupi. This place is still special for those who believe in Madhavacharya.

Composition of texts

Madhavacharya Ji composed many types of texts during his lifetime. In the book called Sumadhvavijaya and Manimanjari, a description of the compositions and works done by Madhavacharya is found. One of the most important philosophers during the time of Bhakti movement in India was Madhavacharya. Madhavacharya was a pioneer of his time, he also went against several prevailing customs.

A Bhashya is written on the Brahmasutra of Dvaita philosophy. He wrote an anecdote explaining the parts of the Brahmana texts which had difficult formulas and Mantras leading to logical confirmation of Vedanta. He also wrote Tikayen on Srimad Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads. Some texts named Mahabharataataparyanirnaya and Srimad Bhagavatpuran were also composed by him. These compositions have explanations on the first forty verses of the Rigveda.

They were however sad about one thing, they did not have children.

Once a great Yogi visits the city. The Yogi survives and fulfills his basic needs by taking alms from each house of the village. The Yogi however does not ask for anything from the Brahmin couple. When the Brahmin couple questions the Yogi, the Yogi says that there is no greater pain in life equivalent to not having children. We Yogis do not take anything from a couple that is devoid of children. It would be a sinful act if we were to ask alms from a childless couple.

When the Brahmin hears this, he expresses his desire for children and seeks the Yogi’s blessings for the same. The Yogi asks the Brahmin to worship Goddess Chandi. The Brahmin tells his wife everything and then leaves for the forest for penance. On the sixteenth day of penance, Goddess Chandi appears in his dreams. She blesses him with a child but also says that the child will live only for sixteen years.

The Brahmin prays to the Goddess for the long life of her son. The Goddess tells him if both of you, husband and wife observe thirty-two Purnamasiyo fasts, then the child will have a long life.

So Dhaneshwar and his wife fasted for thirty-two Paush Purnimas. As a result they were blessed with a beautiful child with longevity. Lord Krishna too is worshipped. According to mythological belief, Bhishma Pitamah had sacrificed his body on Ashtami Tithi on the day of Bhishma Ashtami, but Dwadashi Tithi was selected to carry out all rituals and religious activities for him. Hence, his Nirvana day is celebrated on Dwadashi.

Bhishma Dwadashi Puja Muhurta

  • This year Bhishma Dwadashi will be celebrated on 20 February 2024 on Saturday.
  • Dwadashi Tithi begins – 20 February 2024, from 09:56.
  • Dwadashi Tithi ends – 21 February 2024, to 11:27.

Bhishma Dwadashi Story

In Mahabharata, Bhishma Pitamah was fighting the war on behalf of the Kauravas. It was impossible for the Pandavas to beat Bhishma. This is because Bhishma had the boon to die only when he decides to do so. In the war, the Kauravas could not be defeated because of Bhishma Pitamah’s skills. A plan was made to defeat Bhishma. The center point of this scheme was Shikhandi. Pitamah had vowed that he would never take up arms in front of a woman. Therefore, when the Pandavas find out about this vow they trick Bhishma. During the war, they pitched Shikhandi right in front of Bhishma Pitama. As per his vow, he does not take up arms. Taking advantage of this opportunity Arjun starts showering arrows at Bhishma. Finally, Pitamah collapses and lays down on the bed of arrows.

But at that time Bhishma Pitamah did not give up his life due to Surya Dakshinayan. He sacrifices his body only when the sun turns Uttarayan. Bhishma Pitamah gave up his life on Ashtami. However, the Dwadashi date of Magh month was fixed for his Puja. For this reason, Shukla Paksha Dwadashi Tithi of the Magh month is called Bhishma Dwadashi.

Bhishma Dwadashi Puja Procedure

  • One should wake up early in the morning, finish all chores, take a bath and then worship Lord Vishnu and Sun God.
  • Tarpan should be performed for Bhishma Pitamah with sesame, water and Kusha.
  • The ritual of Tarpan can also be done by a qualified Brahmin.
  • The Brahmins should be offered food and Dakshina.
  • Traditionally ancestors are also worshipped on this day.
  • One should listen to Bhishma Katha on this day. It is believed that by performing pooja etc. on this day alleviates a person’s sufferings and blessings of ancestors are obtained.
  • This Puja also helps in getting rid of Pitra Dosha.

Donate sesame seeds on Bhishma Dwadashi

The day of Bhishma Dwadashi also indicates the importance of donating sesame seeds. Havan is organised on this day and sesame seeds are used in the same. Taking a bath with water filled with sesame seeds and donating sesame seeds both are said to be extremely good. Donating sesame brings happiness to one’s life. The doors to success open. There are different beliefs about this day in Hinduism, but one this is for sure, sesame seeds are considered very important on this day.

Everything related to sesame seeds, from the donation of sesame seeds to the consumption of sesame seeds on the day of Bhishma Dwadashi, is considered auspicious. In Hinduism, sesame seeds are considered holy, perishable and virtuous. One should collect pure sesame seeds and donate them to Brahmins as per one’s capacity. The fruit of donating sesame is similar to that of Agni Yagya. The donor of sesame seeds gets his/her due fruits.

Why Bhishma Pitamah got the boon of “wish death”

According to the legend of Mahabharata, there was a king named Shantanu in Hastinapur. His wife’s name was Ganga and they had a son by the name Devaratna. After the birth of Devavrata, according to her promise, Ganga leaves Shantanu. Shantanu is left alone. Once King Shantanu meets a girl named Satyavati. He gets smitten by her. He goes to Satyavati’s father with the proposal of marriage with Satyavati. Satyavati’s father agrees but on the condition that only the children of Satyavati will be made successors of the state.

Raja Shantanu rejects this condition. But when the son Devavrata comes to know about this, he pledges to remain unmarried and also pledges that he will let the children of Satyavati inherit the kingdom. After this, Satyavati is married to Shantanu. Hearing the son’s harsh vows, King Shantanu gives Devavrata the boon of willful death. It is due to this pledge that Devavrata receives the name Bhishma.

Bhishma gave up his life on Ashtami, but was worshiped on Dwadashi

The period of Bhishma Dwadashi i.e. the Dwadashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Magh month is very important for Tarpan and Puja. Bathing on this day also gives very auspicious results. This day is also called Til Dwadashi. Therefore, both donations and consumption of sesame seeds are good on this day. It is believed that Pandavas performed the last rites of Pitamah Bhishma on this day. Therefore, performing Tarpan and Shraddha for the forefathers on this day brings a lot of peace to their souls.

It is believed that by fasting on the day of Bhishma Dwadashi, a person’s wishes are fulfilled. There is happiness and prosperity in life. Lord Vishnu is also worshiped on Dwadashi. One must provide food and Dakshina to Brahmins according to one’s ability. This leads to an increase in happiness. Taking bath and donation on the day of Dwadashi brings happiness, good fortune and wealth. On this day, food is also served to poor people. All the sins are destroyed by this fast. All wishes are fulfilled by observing this fast. Fasting of Bhishma Dwadashi brings contentment.

Shree Ram Sita Life Character

Ram-Sita Katha invariably forms a part of all our ancient traditions and folk tales. Without them, our mythological stories could have never reached a conclusion. Rama is called Maryadapurushottam and Jagatjanani Sita is considered to be a form of patriotism and Lakshmi*. In India whenever a reference is made to a happily married couple, a comparison is drawn to Ram-Sita. Ram and Sita are considered to be the ideal pair. Even though their marriage ran into trouble because of Ravan, their union is considered an ideal union.

The birth of Shri Ram and Sita is a very important event. Their birth and their entire life have been such an ideal that they are worshipped in the same form as they were several centuries ago i.e. Rama was born in Ayodhya at Dasaratha’s house. At the same time, Sita was born from the earth and Janak, the king of Mithila became her father.

Sita Swayamvar Story

Sri Rama and Sita’s marriage is described in detail in the Ramayana which is written by Tulsidas. The story of their marriage begins in a very beautiful manner when they first meet in the flower garden. Sitaji falls in love with Ramji’s heart. Sita ji then prays to Goddess Parvati and seeks Lord Rama as her husband. The day of Sita’s Swayamvar comes. King Janaka wanted a strong man to wed his daughter. So he lay a condition for Sita’s marriage. He announces that only the man who will be able to lift Shiva’s bow will be able to marry Sita. Their marriage is described very vividly in Ramayana.

Once when Sita ji was a small child, while playing she lifted the Shiva bow effortlessly. This astounded everyone as lifting the Shiva bow was by no means a small task. Given that Sita ji lifted it while she was just a child was even more impressive. When King Janak noticed this he vowed to marry Sita to a groom who is equivalent to her and thus should be able to lift the Shiva bow without much struggle.

Once Sita ji becomes eligible for marriage, Raja Janak declares her Swayamwar and sends invites to princes across all the kingdoms. The same invite reaches Rishi Vishwamitra in the forests. Rishi Vishwamitra along with Ram and Lakshma reach Janakpuri to participate in the Swayamvara. Ram and Sita first meet in a Pushpavatika and again during the Swayamvar where an amazing spectacle takes place. Each of the invited princes tries to lift the bow as per King Janak’s instructions. They all try to show their might but no one succeeds. The princes are neither able to lift the bow nor are they able to load the arrow.

This situation disappoints King Janak gravely. He gets frustrated that none of the princes could lift the Shiva bow. Finally on the command of his Guru Lord Rama attempts to lift the bow and manages to do so effortlessly. In fact, the bow breaks in his hand. The minute the bow breaks Ram’s marriage to Sita gets solemnised.
