Vishwakarma is worshiped on the day of Kartik Shukla Paksha Pratipada. On this festival, Vishwakarma, the god of creation and creation, is worshiped. Based on certain beliefs, all types of machines, weapons, tools etc. are also worshiped on the day of Vishwakarma worship. As per mythology Vishwakarma is the architect of everything and is skilled in any form of construction.
In the Puranas, Vishwakarma is said to be the presiding deity of the Yantras, hence the worship of Yantras is done on this day. It is only because of Vishwakarma ji, humans have been able to enjoy the bounties of the earth. With his blessings, we have invented instruments and harnessed powerful physical resources. Whatever information is available in ancient scriptures about avionics, knowledge of Vastu Shastra, machine building, etc. is obtained through Vishwakarma.
Vishwakarma birth story
Vishwakarma is in keeping with his name. He is the creator of the world and so he is called Vishwa Karma. There are many stories related to Vishwakarma. While some of these stories are based on mythological beliefs, others are based on folklife. According to some legends, Brahma Ji created Vishwakarma. As per one such story, once when Narayana of the universe is in the ocean of Kshira, his navel-lotus generates Charmukh Brahma ji. Dharma was the son of Brahma and Vastu was the son of Dharma. Vastu Dev attains the knowledge of craftsmanship. The son of Vastu Dev is Vishwakarma. Vishwakarma ji masters the subject of architecture.
Many forms of Vishwakarma have been described in mythological texts. In some places, he is described with two arms, four in some and ten too in other texts. Similarly in some places, he is believed to have one face and yet in other places he is believed to have four or five faces. He is also believed to have five children Manu, Maya, Twashtha, Shilpi and Devagya. It is believed that his five sons are knowledgeable in different forms of architecture.
Vishwakarma ji also invented many things in Vedic period. Vishwakarma ji associated iron with Manu, wood with Maya, bronze and copper with TwashtHa, brick with Shilpi and gold and silver with Devagya.
Vishwakarma ji's construction work
Vishwakarma ji has been revered since ancient times due to his unique knowledge and also knowledge of science. He is worshipped by one and all, be it Devas, Yakshas, Danavas, Gandharvas or humans. Lord Vishwakarma has been the pioneer of several inventions. He is the creator of several beautiful cities, of the heaven, city of Indrapuri, Yampuri, Varunpuri, Kubera, Lanka and so on. Mythological books also mention he had created the cities Basai, Kashi, Sudampuri and Shiv Puri for the Pandavas.
Pushpak Vimana has been one of his most important creations. The houses of all the gods and the weapons used by them are also made by Vishwakarma. Karna’s Kundal and Kavach, Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra or the Trishul of Lord Shiva all of these are Vishwakarma’s tools. Yamraj’s Kaldand or Indra's weapons, again these too are creations of Vishwakarma.
Vishwakarma Purana
The Vishwakarma Purana describes Vishwakarma as the creator of the world. According to this Purana, Brahma too is created by Vishwakarma. The creation of the universe began after the creation of Brahma. Brahma was given the boon to create all beings. Vishwakarma was born to different Yonies, Vishwakarma originated Lord Vishnu and he entrusted Lord Vishnu with the task of protecting and nurturing the creatures of the world.
He gave Sudarshan Chakra to Vishnu for the smooth functioning of the Trilok. At the same time, Lord Shiva was assigned the task of destruction. Shiva was given tools like the Damru, Kamandal and Trishul. He also provided the third eye to Shiva and made him powerful enough to bring the end of the world if required. He imparted various Goddesses with powers. Goddess Durga was also given powers and powerful weapons. Goddess Lakshmi was given the Kalash, Goddess Saraswati was given speech, Goddess Gauri was given the Trishul.
Vishwakarma Puja Vidhi
On Vishwakarma Day, various machines and tools are worshiped. On this day people install the idol of Lord Vishwakarma. Puja is done by following all the rituals. According to popular beliefs, tools or machines are not used on this day. They are only worshipped and not put to use. Vishwakarma is said to be the world's first engineer and architect. On such days, all kinds of machines in industries and factories are worshiped. As this era is of computers, they too are worshipped.
On Vishwakarma Day, offices, shops, workshops, factories, whether small institutions or big should be cleaned. All workers should also worship their tools or goods. After this, Kalash should be placed in the Puja. The idol or picture of Lord Vishwakarma should be placed. Yajna etc. are also organized on this day. One should take Lord Vishnu’s name and meditate. Flowers and Akshat should be sprinkled all around while reciting Mantras.
Raksha Sutra should be tied in hand and this thread should be tied on the machines also. Keeping Lord Vishwakarma in mind, one should light a lamp and offer flowers and betel nuts. After this one should perform Havan and Yagna worshiping various types of tools and instruments etc. After following all the Puja rituals an Aarti of Lord Vishwakarma should be performed. Prasad should be offered to the Lord. The Puja Aarti should be rotated on the entire premises where the Puja is conducted. After that, one should seek the blessings of Vishwakarma for the smooth functioning of the workplace.
