Kajli Tritiya fast is observed for welfare and happiness. It is celebrated in Bhadrapad month. The Tritiya Tithi of Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapad month is celebrated as Kajli Teej. It is known by different names like` Kajri, Satudi, etc. and it is celebrated in many parts of India. In many parts, fasting is observed on this day and Goddess Parvati is worshipped.
Kajli Tritiya Vrat : Shubh Muhurat
This year Kajli Tritiya fast will be observed on 21 August 2024, Wednesday.
- Tritiya Tithi start - 21 September 2024 at 17:07.
- Tritiya Tithi end - 22 August 2024 at 13:47.
This fast is observed for the auspiciousness of marital relations, attain Akhand Saubhagya and strengthen the relationship with the life partner. This festival is important for married women just like other Teejs. On this day married women observe fast for the long life of their husbands and unmarried girls observe the fast to get a good groom.
Goddess Parvati is considered the Devi of Tritiya Tithi. According to Vedic Puranas, this fast blesses the girls with welfare, progeny and a happy married life.

Kajli Tritiya Puja Vidhi
The Puja of this fast starts early in the morning. In this fast, the devotee faces north or east direction and takes the oath of fast by placing water, rice, flowers and money in their hand. The devotee should follow pure and Sattvik behaviour. This strengthens the internal power of the devotee. The devotee should not sleep in the afternoon while observing this fast. Dhoop, Deep, Chandan, garlands, honey, and rice are used in the Puja. During the Puja, makeup items and Red Chunari should be presented to Goddess Parvati.
According to religious scriptures, the house or temple should be decorated like a Mandap. A Kalash should be placed at the place of worship. After placing the idols of Shiva and Parvati, their Mantras should be recited during the Puja. After the Puja, Malpuas made of wheat and jaggery should be presented as Bhog. Honey is presented to Goddess Durga in this fast. Dakshina is given to the Brahmins the next day as per one’s capabilities. The devotee should first serve meals to the Brahmins and eat only after that marking the completion of the fast.
Kajli Tritiya Katha
There are many mythological stories and folk tales on Kajli Tritiya. One such story on Kajli Tritiya in Vedic scriptures is based on Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. As per this story, Goddess Parvati wanted to marry Lord Shiva, but he wanted to stay a bachelor. In order to please Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati did hard penance for several years. She didn’t consume any food during this time. This impressed Lord Shiva and finally he decided to get married to Goddess Parvati. The union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is celebrated as Kajli Tritiya.
The fast is observed for Akhand Saubhagya and marital happiness
It is believed that worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on this day brings love and peace in life. This fast is also effective for unmarried girls. They can get their desired groom by observing this fast. On the other hand, married girls observe this fast for the long life of their partners and to receive blessings from the Goddess.
It is believed that Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati on this day having got impressed with her. That’s why it is called Kajli Teej.
Kajli Tritiya Vrat Mahatmya
The importance and effectiveness of Kajli Tritiya is also mentioned in the religious texts. According to beliefs, this fast was also observed by Shachi, the wife of Indra Dev. She observed this fast for the safety and happiness of her husband. As a result of observing the fast, she was blessed with a child.
Some facts about this fast can also be read in Mahabharat in which Lord Krishna tells Yudhishtir about the importance of this fast. Lord Krishna says that - ‘Hey Kunti Putra, in order to worship Goddess Parvati on the Tritiya Tithi of Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapad month, the idol of the Goddess should be crafted using seven types of grains. On this day Goddess Durga is also worshipped’. By observing this fast, the devotee gets the same results as that of performing the Vajpayee Yagya. A married woman who observes this fast is never separated from her partner.
