Phalgun Shukla Ashtami is celebrated as Lakshmi Sita Ashtami. Goddess Lakshmi is considered as the Avatar of Seeta, the form of both is the same that’s why this day is considered highly auspicious for observing Seeta-Lakshmi Ashtami Puja. Both the Goddesses are worshipped on this day, but first Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped and then Goddess Seeta.

Ancient importance of Lakshmi Seeta Ashtami

Goddess Seeta is a form of Goddess Lakshmi. This festival is celebrated as Seeta Lakshmi Ashtami. This festival marks the various sacrifices and struggles Goddess Seeta has undergone in the incarnation of Goddess Sati. This festival establishes a similar ideal for everyone. This act of Goddess Seeta is unforgettable. She will be worshipped forever.

According to ancient scriptures, the Ashtami Tithi of both Krishna and Shukla Paksha of Phalgun month is associated with the arrival of Goddess Seeta on the earth. To understand the importance of Goddess Seeta’s incarnation amongst the incarnations of all the other Gods and Goddesses, one must start with her birth. We do not know much about this in the Vedas, but if we talk about the Puranas, then we find many stories related to Seeta ji’s birth. Similarly there are several folk stories which talk about Seetaji’s birth.

Sita Ji is considered to have been incarnated from the earth. This is why she was named Seeta. We get to learn about her character from Ram Katha. Ramcharitra Manas is an ancient text based on the lives of Shri Ram and Goddess Seeta. Mata Seeta is the daughter of Mithila Naresh, King Janak. Being the daughter of Janak, she is also called Janki and Janaksuta. Being a Mithila Kumari, she is also known as Maithili. She got married to Lord Ram, the son of Ayodhya Naresh, King Dashrath. After that, her life was filled with ups and downs. Just as Goddess Sita is believed to have originated from the land, similarly Goddess Sita is considered to have departed in the earth in her last time.

When and why is Lakshmi Sita Puja performed?

This day is celebrated with utmost enthusiasm and excitement due to their birth time being associated with this fast. Every year on this day Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Sita are worshipped. On this day Bhanjan and Kirtan are performed in the temples.

Let’s learn about the Vidhi and ingredients to be used in Lakshmi Seeta Puja Vidhi -

Sita Puja Vidhi

  • Goddess Seeta should be worshipped first on the day of the fast, after getting free from the daily chores.
  • Greeting Goddess Sita and Shri Ram Ji, they should light a lamp in front of them in the temple.
  • Pledge should be taken to observe the fast.
  • Gree flowers and clothes should be used in the Puja. It is considered highly auspicious. If yellow colour is not available then use colour according to your capability.
  • Sixteen makeup items should be presented to Mother Sita. Things related to married ladies should be offered to the Goddess.
  • Seeta Mata Aarti should be performed. ‘श्री जानकी रामाभ्यां नमः’ - this mantra should be recited 108 times.
  • Yellow food items should be offered in Bhoga and then Seeta Mata Aarti should be performed.
  • Food items made of milk and jaggery should be offered as Bhoga.


    • Lakshmi Puja Vidhi

  • Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped after Goddess Seeta.
  • Along with Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu should also be worshipped.
  • A Kalash filled with water should be kept in Puja.
  • Milk, Kheer, and Mewa should be offered to the Goddess.
  • Clothes and jewellery should be offered to both the Gods.
  • Akshat, Kumkum, Dhoopbatti, Ghee Deepak, and Ashtagandh should be used in the Puja.
  • Rose and lotus should be offered to Goddess Lakshmi.
  • Flower garland and Itra should be used. Goddess Lakshmi Aarti should be recited and ‘ऊँ महालक्ष्मयै नमः’ mantra should be recited.
  • Sweets, Kheer, coconut, and Panchamrit should be offered as Bhog.
  • The Bhog should be distributed amongst everyone after the Puja.
