According to Saints, a person keeping this fast lives a prosperous life. Women keeping this fast have a happy married life. Gauri Tritiya fast has been explained in Shiva Purana. When the whole world was destroyed, fortune of the whole world went to Lord Vishnu’s residing place in Baikunth Lok.

When Lord Brahma created the world again, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu’s powers combined and a huge volcano could be seen. Due to this, Lord Vishnu’s residing place was heated and fortune started melting on Earth. However, Lord Brahma’s son Daksha Prajapati stopped the flow of fortune and drank it before it could reach Earth.

Due to this, Daksha Prajapati was blessed with a daughter. Goddess Sati is known by many different names including Gauri. Goddess Gauri was married to Lord Shiva on Tritiya of Shukla Paksha. Therefore, Gauri Tritiya fast is celebrated on this day. This fast fulfills all desires.

A person should wake up early in the morning, take a bath and worship Goddess Parvati as well as Lord Shiva. Their idols should be given a bath with water mixed with sandalwood as well as panchagavya. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati should be worshipped with dhoop, lamps, naivedya, fruits etc. Idols made of mud are worshipped and Haritalika Teej story is read. Sindoor, bangles, kajal etc. are offered to Goddess Parvati.

This fast is considered to be very important for women. It is believed that Goddess Parvati kept this fast and was blessed with a marriage to Lord Shiva. Goddess Parvati kept this fast on Tritiya of Shukla Paksha during Bhadrapad month. Goddess Parvati did not drink water or consume food and kept chanting Lord Shiva’s mantras. Eventually, Lord Shiva appeared and blessed her.
