Dhan Teres is celebrated on the day of Dhanvantari Jayanti

Dhanvantari ji's birth time is celebrated as Dhanteras festival. The story of Dhanteras is as follows: -Once when Lord Vishnu decides to visit the earth, Goddess Lakshmi urges Lord Vishnu to take her along. Lord Vishnu agrees to take Lakshmiji on the condition that she will agree to whatever he asks of her. Lakshmi ji agrees to Vishnu jit. After some time Shri Vishnu ji halts Lakshmi ji at one place and asks her to wait there and not move till he returns back. Lord Vishnuji then proceeds southwards from there.

Goddess Lakshmi does not obey Lord Vishnu. Her curiosity gets the better of her and she starts following Lord Vishnu. After some time they come across a beautiful field with flowers. The flowers were so beautiful that Goddess Lakshmi plucks one flower and keeps it with her. Further ahead they come across a sugarcane field. Goddess Lakshmi then cuts a sugarcane and drinks its juice.

When Lord Vishnu returns and finds Goddess Lakshmi on the same path he gets angry. He gets upset with Goddess Lakshmi. As a punishment, he commands Goddess Lakshmi to live with the owner of the field for 12 years. Lord Vishnu then departs leaving Goddess Lakshmi at the field.

This makes Lakshmi ji sad but she follows Lord Vishnu ji’s instructions. She goes to the farmer's house and asks for permission to work in her house. The farmer was poor but allowed Laxmi ji to live with him. With the passage of time and the grace of Lakshmi, the farmer becomes rich. 12 years pass. Lakshmi ji awaits her return to Vishnu ji. Vishnu ji too comes to fetch Lakshmi ji in the Avatar of a common man.

The farmer and his wife do not want Lakshmi ji to leave their place, because they feel that she has brought good luck to their family. Lord Vishnu tries to explain to the farmer that Lakshmi ji was staying with him to fulfill a punishment. The period of punishment is over and now he has come to take Lakshmi ji along.

The farmer however, is not persuaded and refuses to let go of Lakshmi ji. Lakshmi ji then comes up with a solution. She tells the farmer - "O farmer, if you want to keep me with you forever, then you clean the house tomorrow, light a lamp of ghee in the night and worship me. If you will follow this, I will stay at your house forever. Similarly, every year on the day of Teres, if you worship me I will stay in your house.” The farmer agrees to this proposition. He follows Lakshmi ji’s instructions and remains rich forever with the blessings of Lakshmi ji.
