Basant Panchami Date 2024
Basant Panchami is celebrated on fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Magh month. In 2024, Basant Panchami will be celebrated on 14th february. On arrival of Basant Panchmi the chill of winter season is on its departure. People worship Lord to thank him for sending the spring season which gives relief from the chilling cold weather. Then, everyone express their happiness invariant manner. Flying kites is one of the modes to show the joy.
Basant Panchami is the birthday of Goddess Saraswati, the Adhisthtari Devi of Vedas. Saraswati is the Goddess of learning and speech, and one of the three Mahadevi (great Goddess). Basant Panchami has special significance as it is the birthday of Maa Saraswati.
On this day Lord Vishnu, God Krishna-Radha and Goddess of education Mother Saraswati is worshiped with yellow flowers, Gulaal, water offerings, incense, lamp etc. As per the tradition, yellow and sweet rice and yellow coloured Halwa is offered to God in the pooja and then eaten as Prasadam.
Historical Significance of Basant Panchami
Lord Krishna has mentioned in the 10th chapter of Gita “out of the 6 season, I am the spring season. Vasant is my form. This season is very dear to me.” That is why, festival of Basant Panchami is celebrated in a special manner in Mathura and other places linked with Lord Krishna. The other five seasons are : summer, rainy season, autumn, cold season (between mid-November to mid-January) and winter. Basant Panchami is the festival of joy and excitement. Winter season is on its departure, during this festival. And, the summer season is on its arrival with the blossoming of new flowers. The ending of winter brings an environment of activeness.
In the ancient period, people used to wear Basanti coloured clothes of muslin on the day of Basant Panchami. Poets, pleased by this season used to start up with their writings. On the day of Vasant Panchami, people cook yellow coloured rice and consume it along with all their family members and relatives.
On the day of Panchami, in Mathura, the birth place of Lord Krishna, a grand fair is organised in the temple of Sage Durvasa. On this day, all the temples of this place are beautifully decorated. The Gods and Goddesses of temples are dressed magnificently. Yellow coloured flowers are used the most in decoration works. Radha-Krishna, decorated with the colors of Basant, looks marvelous. Huge crowd of devotees gather here on this day.
Basant Panchami Festival
The day of Basant Panchami is considered to be the beginning of life. Spring season is the season of rebirth and bloom. In this season, fields of yellow mustard, charm everybody's heart. Wheat crop starts swinging like gold. Colorful flowers starts blossoming. The day of Basant Panchami is celebrated as the welcoming of colors and happiness.
Basant Panchami is included in the Abujh muhurt. Basant Panchami is a favourable day for auspicious works like marriage, construction of house, beginning of a factory, inauguration of an educational institute etc.
