Ananta Vasudeva Temple - Ananta Vasudeva Temple, Bhubaneswar

Ananta Vasudeva Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu. It is located in Bhubaneswar, the state capital of Orissa and was constructed in thirteenth century. Idols of Lord Krishna, Lord Balaram and Goddess Subhadra are worshipped here. The idol of Lord Balarama stands under a seven hooded serpent, Subhadra holds a pot of Jewels and lotus in her two hands, while Lord Krishna holds a mace, chakra and a conch.

Ananta Vasudeva Temple is one of the most important and only Vaishnava temple in Bhubaneswar. Since Krishna was an avatara of Vishnu, so this temple is basically a Vaishnavite temple. The western side of the temple lies near the bank of Bindu Sagar Lake.

Architecture of Ananta Vasudeva Temple

The structure of Ananta Vasudeva temple differs significantly from other temples in nearby areas. The main temple stands on a uniform platform and has three- chambered frontal adjunct consisting of Jagamohana, Natamandira and Bhogamandapa. It has a longitudinal bands of miniature shrines carved with ornaments. Most of the sculptures of females in the temple walls are overly ornamented and lack originality. The temple was built in 13th century by Chandrika Devi, the daughter of Anangabhima III, during the reign of king Bhanudeva on the bank of Bindusaras in 1278 A.D.

History of Ananta Vasudeva Temple

As per the legend, it is believed that original image of Lord Vishnu was worshipped at this place during 13th century. Later on in 1278 A.D, Queen Chandrika of Eastern Ganga dynasty was prompted to construct a new temple in this place that was named Ananta Vasudeva Temple. It is also believed that there is also an old temple where the original idol of Lord Vishnu was installed. The Marathas were responsible for renovating the Vishnu temple at Bhubaneswar in late 17th Century since they extended their reign till Mahanadi river.

Significance of Ananta Vasudeva Temple

Ananta Vasudeva Temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Every year thousands of devotees of Lord Krishna visit this place from around the world  to pay homage to the deities. The major festival of this temple is Janmastami. Janmanshtami fair and special bhajans are organized on this day and all the devotees participate in various religious ceremonies. The temple is beautifully decorated on this day to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna.
