Tasks that should be done on Chaitra Amavasya
- After taking an early morning bath, water should be offered to Surya Dev.
- Pitra Tarpan should be performed for deceased ancestors in the South direction.
- Worship Lord Vishnu and perform Jal Abhishek on Shivling.
- Pitra Stotra or Pitra Sutak Paath should be recited.
- Raw Lassi and Gangajal should be offered on the Pipal tree.
- Along with this, black sesame seeds, sugar, rice, water, and flowers should also be offered on the Pipal tree.
- Chapati and green fodder should be offered to the cow.
- Tulsi Puja should be performed and red thread should be tied around it.
- On this day, a lamp of cow’s Ghee should be lit in the northeast direction of the house.
- One lamp should be lit at the main door of the house also.
- Chastity and Brahmacharya should be followed.

Remedies to follow on Chaitra Amavasya
Chaitra Krishna Paksha Amavasya is also known as Bhoot Amavasya at some places. On this day, make small balls of wheat flour and put them in a river or reservoir that contains fish. This will remove all the negativity from life.
- Foodgrains should be fed to birds on this day.
- Sugar and wheat flour should be fed to ants.
- Food, clothes, etc. should be given to poor people in charity.People who are suffering from Kaal Sarp Yog should perform Puja on this day. Jal Abhishek on Shivling should be performed for the peace of Kaal Sarp Yog. Naag Dev should be worshipped. Once a snake couple made up of silver is worshipped, it should be cleaned in running water for the peace of Kaal Sarp Yoga.

According to Garuda Purana, this day is considered important for ancestors.
If Pitra Pujan, fast, etc. are observed on this day, then the devotee can get relief from any type of Pitra Dosha. It is believed that our ancestors visit the Earth on this day. When donations and charity are done in their name they bless the devotee with growth of the family and happiness.
While offering water to Surya Dev in the morning, the following Mantra should be recited - ‘'ॐ पितृभ्य: नम:’. This Mantra can be recited the whole day also.Pitra Tarpan in the name of ancestors should be performed while facing the south direction.
