A lot of legends are famous about Naag Panchami. Reading or listening to these legends is considered to be auspicious. Besides this, snakes should also be worshipped on this day. According to Hindu religion, snakes are associated with the Lords in numerous ways. For example, Lord Vishnu sleeps on a snake while Lord Shiva wears a snake in his neck.
The nine famous appearances of Naag Deva have been mentioned in the Naag Stotra. Worshipping these nine forms relieves a person of any fair of snakes and snake poison.

Naag Panchami Worship
A person should wake up early on this day and take a bath. A snake made out of cow dung should be kept at the main door or place of worship. Milk, Doob, Kusha, Sandalwood, Rice etc. should be used to worship Naag Deva at the main door. The idol should be offered sweets etc as Bhoga. It is believed that pouring milk on a snake on this day relieves a person from the fear of snakes. This festival is celebrated differently in different parts of India.
This festival is celebrated with a lot of excitement in Southern Maharashtra and West Bengal. Naag Devi Mansa is worshipped in parts of Bengal, Assam and Orissa during these days. Shesh Naag is worshipped in the temples of Kerala during this period. Digging the earth or sowing seeds is prohibited on this day.
Goddess Saraswati is worshipped on the day of Naag Panchami. Women in the house should wake up early, take a bath and worship Naag Deva. This brings prosperity, peace and relieves the family members of stress.
An Aarti should be carried out which should include sandalwood, haridra, churna, kumkum, sindoor, bel leaves, ornaments, garlands of flowers, dhoop, deep, ritu fruit, naivedya etc. It is believed that worshipping Naag Deva in this way fulfills all wishes and desires. Naag Deva is fond of fragrances. Hence, flowers with a nice fragrance and sandalwood should also be used in the worship.
Naag Deva should be called at the time of worship. Water, flowers and sandalwood should be offered to him. An idol of Naag Deva should be given a bath with milk, curd, honey, jaggery and ghrit. At last, water mixed with sandalwood should be poured on the idol.
