Astrology and Ayurveda
Ayurveda is the Indian system of medication that has been practised in India for centuries. We can find numerous references of association of vedic astrology with ayurvedic healing in the ancient Hindu scriptures.
The Three Doshas
Ayurveda is based on the three constitutions or the three Doshas. These three Doshas are known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Vata corresponds to air, Pitta to fire and Kapha to earth and water. The astrological signs can be categorised as follows according to their basic nature:
- Vata : Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius.
- Pitta : Aries, Leo, Sagittarius and Scorpio.
- Kapha : Taurus, Cancer, and Pisces.
There are several methods which can help us to decide the constitution of a person, such as the pulse diagnosis, a urine test, face reading and the general disposition of a person.
Astrological Establishment of the Three Doshas
Astrology plays an important role in determination of the constitution or Dosha of a person. One should use Vedic horoscope to define the Dosha of a person since the Vedic astrology and Ayurveda have the same roots. Following points should be kept in mind while defining a constitution or a Dosha.
- The ascendant or the lord of the ascendant should be studied and Sun should not be studied in a Janma Kundali. For example, if the ascendant is Aries which a Pitta sign and the lord of the ascendant (Mars) is in Scorpio (a pitta sign), it indicates a Pitta constitution.
- Planets in the first house are also important, especially if they are close to the Ascendant. For instance, if a person has Jupiter in the first house, then that person tends to gain weight and may have a Kapha constitution.
- We also need to know which planets are in the sixth house and where their lord of the sixth house is placed. If Mercury is in the sixth house and in Pisces, that points to either a Vata or a Kapha constitution.
- Another factor that plays a role in this analysis is the position of the Moon. The Moon imparts an important influence on the human body.
- The strongest planet in the horoscope is also important in defining the Dosha or constitution of a person.
According to Ayurveda and astrology, all three seasons aggravate different diseases.
1.Summer Season
The summer season represents Pitta Dosha. This season may cause health issues such as acidity, hypertension, fevers of various types, hot flames, bleedings from various organs and jaundice. Planets responsible for all these ailments in summer season are Mars, Sun and Rahu.
2.Rainy Season
This season indicates Vaata Dosha. In this season, a person is likely to get pains and aches. Pains in veins, fits, arthritis, migraine, paralysis, sprains, alzheimer’s disease, allergies and skin diseases of various kind are most likely to occur. Planets responsible for these diseases are Saturn, Rahu, Ketu and Mercury.
3.Winter Season
This season governs Kapha Dosha. A person is likely to suffer from diseases such as cough, bronchitis, tuberculosis, pleurisy, swollen lymph glands, respiratory disorders and heart diseases in this period. The planets mainly responsible for these diseases are Jupiter, Moon and Ketu.
