Why does Adhik Maas exist?
To understand why Adhik Maas comes, we have to understand the Surya Siddhanta. Vedic astrology mathematics is used in the calculation of the Hindu Panchang. As per this theory, there are 365 days, 15 days, 31 seconds and 30 Vipal in a solar year. But on the other hand, when we calculate the lunar year, it consists of 354 days, 22 hours, 1 second and Vipal. This leads to a difference of 10/11 days, 53 hours, 30 seconds and 7 seconds in both the solar year and the lunar year. This difference remains every year. To overcome this difference between the solar year and the lunar year, the idea of Adhik Maas came into existence.

Why does Adhik Maas come after every three years?
Why does Adhik Maas come after every three years? What are the reasons and why is it considered so sacred? It is natural for us to wonder and feel curious about this. Let us try and find answers to all these questions.
To understand this, the roles of both scientists and astrologers have been accepted. Scientific calculation and Vedic Jyotish calculation helps to explain this situation very clearly.
If you look at the principles of Maharishi Vasishta in astrology, then according to them the Hindu calendar is based on the Sun and the Moon. Surya month is understood from Sankranti and Lunar month is seen on the basis of Purnima and Amawasya.
Adhik Maas is the extra part (Adhik) of the lunar year, which comes at a gap of every 32 months, 16 days and 8 hours. It was created in order to help balance the difference between the sun and the lunar year. According to the Indian calculation method, each sun year is 365 days and about 6 hours, while the lunar year is 354 days. There is a difference of about 10/11 days between the two years. It becomes equal to about 1 month every three years. To erase this difference, a lunar month is designed every three years. Hence this month is called the Adhik Maas.

Adhik Maas Story
After the conception of Adhik Maas, he was criticised by everyone. This made Adhik Maas very sad and he went to Vishnu Lok. Adhik Maas complained to Lord Vishnu. As per Adhik Maas every month had a Lord but he did not have one and hence he was made fun of by names such as Malmaas, Malimluch etc. No auspicious tasks too are undertaken in Adhik Maas. All this disappointed Adhik Maas. To solve the problem, Lord Vishnu conferred his own name Purushottam over Adhik Maas. From then on it is called Purushottam Maas.
