What is Varuni Yoga and Importance of Varuni Yoga

Varuni Yoga is a very auspicious and good Yoga which propels everything in a positive direction. It is an extremely pure and auspicious Muhurat of the Hindu Panchang. It is similar to those auspicious Muhurats which depict the importance of Abuja Muhurta. Many religious acts performed at the time of Varuni Yoga. Every moment of this period leads to novelty and auspiciousness in itself.

Each moment of this Yoga is considered full of purity and auspicious. Scriptures like the Dharma Sindhu, Kashi etc. reinforce the importance of Varuni Yoga. The importance of this Yoga is described in very beautiful words in these scriptures. Be it North India or South India, Varuni Yoga is celebrated everywhere. The description of the auspiciousness of this period is found in the texts of different languages across India.

Three types of Varuni Yoga

It is believed that Varuni Yoga is formed in three ways, as a result its importance progressively increases. This Yoga manifests auspiciousness in different forms based primarily on the month, constellation, day and auspicious Yogas.

Many schools of thought are also found with regard to Varuni Yoga. Along with the mention of Varuni Yoga, it is also mentioned that Mahavaruni Yoga falls in the month of Falgun, Chaitra, and Margashirsha.

Varuni Yoga

“Varuni Yoga” is formed when Shatabhisha Nakshatra occurs on the Trayodashi date of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month.

Mahavaruni Yoga

“Mahavaruni Yoga” is formed when the Shatabhisha Nakshatra occurs on the Trayodashi date of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month on a Saturday.

Mahamahavaruni Yoga

“Mahamahavaruni Yoga” is formed when the Shatabhisha Nakshatra occurs on the Trayodashi date of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month on a Saturday along with Shubh Yoga.Mythological significance of Varuni Yoga

Bhavishyapuran

According to Bhavishyapuran, Mahavaruni festival takes place when the Trayodashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month occurs on a Saturday or in Shatabhisha Nakshatra. Snan, donation and Shradh done in holy rivers during this period give Akshay Fal.

Varuni Yoga Snan Puja

On the day of Varuni Yoga, Lord Vishnu should be worshiped after taking a bath. Next one should worship Lord Shiva. Surya Namaskar should be done. Apart from this, Radha-Krishna, Tulsi, Peepal, Amla tree should be worshiped. A lamp should be lit in front of Tulsi in the morning. At this time religious texts such as Geeta, Bhagavata, Ramayana, Purana etc. should be recited. It is best to conduct Bhajan Kirtan Katha in Varuni Yoga. Ishta Pujan and Tulsi Puja are also done in this Puja. Deepdan should also be conducted near a river, pond or a house.

When along with Snan one carries out Puja, Upasna, Chanting during the Varuni Yoga, he/she gets Akshay Fal. On this auspicious occasion, there has also been a tradition of fasting throughout the day and consuming food at night only after offering food to the stars.

Importance of Ganga Snan in Varuni Yoga

The tradition of performing a Snan in the Varuni Yoga has been going on since very ancient times. Along with Snan, people also give donations. It is believed Snan done on this day is extremely beneficial. This day is considered very auspicious for bathing in the Ganges. Along with taking a bath, it is also advised to observe penance throughout this Yoga. Momvrat and medication done on this day also give very good results.

When one performs all the activities related to Varuni Yoga such as Snan, religious sermons and stories as soon as the Yoga commences one is blessed with auspicious results. It is believed that the world’s cycle is at its most auspicious level on this day. In fact, this day is believed to be so extraordinary that even Gods have to come to Earth for a Snan and receive the benefit of the same.

One should bathe in the Ganga, the Yamuna or any river, ghat or lake, etc. each day during the Varuni Yoga. If this is not possible one can simply take a bath at home. After taking a bath, one should also worship and chant the Mantra of the God one worships. If this day further coincides with the right Nakshatra and auspicious Yoga then the period is said to be Mahavaruni Yoga. This period is considered very auspicious for Snan. Apart from this, the results are also very good when one meditates on various Nakshatras while bathing.

The spiritual impact of charity in Varuni Yoga

The great glory of Varuni Yoga has been mentioned in the scriptures. On this day, while bathing in the holy river, lake or pool relevant Nakshatra is worshiped. According to the scriptures, Snan brings happiness, health benefits and prosperity.

All sins are destroyed by following charity and restraint in this period. Auspicious results equivalent to that of going on a pilgrimage are obtained. The donations which are done with a pure frame of mind, no matter how big or small give Akshay Fal.

The mythological texts talk about the glory of Varuni Yoga in detail. Snan and Tapa on this day are believed to lead one to salvation. Donations and Chanting open the doors of heavens. It brings an end to the Karmic cycle. Ganga Snan, Deep Daan, Havan, Yagya and various rituals etc., mitigates both sin and aggression. Donation of grain, money and clothes leads to auspiciousness.
