Panchak means - Five, Panchak is determined based on the Moon. When the Moon transits from the Aquarius sign to the Pisces sign, then this phase is called Panchak, during this phase the Moon passes through five constellations. These are the Uttarardh of Dhanishta Nakshatra, Shatabhisha Nakshatra, Purva Bhadrapada Nakshatra, Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra and Revati Nakshatra. Many scholars consider the whole part of Dhanishta Nakshatra as Panchak and some consider half of it as Panchak. Any auspicious work should not be done during the time of Panchak. The work done during this time increases five times.

Five types of Panchaks are formed on the basis of the Sun’s degree. These are - Roga, Agni, Nripa, Chor and Mrityu. Yagnopavit doesn’t happen in Roga Band, construction of a house or Grihapravesh doesn’t happen in Agni Band, job is forbidden in Nripa Band, travel is forbidden in Chor Band and marriage is forbidden in Mrityu Band.

What are Panchkas and why are they considered inauspicious

During Panchak, the above mentioned tasks may get delayed. According to Rajmartand, travelling towards the south direction, constructing a roof, collecting fuel or making a cot during Dhanishta Nakshatra can lead to pyromania. Doing these tasks during Shatabhisha Nakshatra leads to conflicts. Doing them in Purva Bhadrapada Nakshatra can lead to diseases, in Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra they can cause penalty and doing them in Revati Nakshatra can lead to loss of money.
