Mundan is one Sanskar amongst the 16 Hindu Sanskaras. Mundan plays a very important role in Hindu tradition and ritual. During Mundan the hair present on a child’s head at the time of birth is removed. The procedure of tonsuring a child’s head itself is called Mundan. Mundan is also known as Chudakarm, Cholkarma etc. Mundan Sanskar is carried out only after checking the right Muhurat time for it.
Traditionally the third, fifth and seventh year is considered as Mundan Sanskar. Along with this, as per this ritual can be carried out in the first year too as per the clan or Varna of the child. In some places this Sanskar is carried out at the time of Yagyo Pavit Sanskar.
In order to do the Mundan of a girl child an even year is selected whereas the Mundan of a boy child is done during an odd year.
Why is Mundan Sanskar done?
Mundan Sanskar is carried out as it is believed that when a child is in the womb, some contaminated particles are also present in his/her hair. When this hair is shaved it is believed that all kinds of impurities are removed.
Apart from this, there are some other beliefs and schools of thought, the shaving of a child’s hair eliminates his/her sins of previous births and he/she gets freedom from all kinds of debts. Even the Vedas lay down several facts about the Mundan Sanskara which prove the importance of this Sanskara.
