Many stories about the origin of gemstones can be found in astrology and religious scriptures. In Agni Purana, the origin of gemstones has been associated with the killing of Vritrasur. In order to kill this demon, a weapon made of the bones of saint Dadhichi was used. Some parts of saint Dadhichi’s bones fell on earth when this weapon was being created. Diamond mines were formed wherever these parts fell.

According to another story, lord Vishnu incarnated as Vaman in order to kill the demon king, Bali. Lord Vishnu disguised himself as a saint and asked for a part of earth equivalent to three times the size of his foot. As a result, he acquired the whole earth, sky and underworld. It is believed that when king Bali touched Lord Vishnu’s feet, his body was transformed into gemstones. When lord Indra attacked Bali, the gemstones scattered all around the earth. As a result, mines were created at different places. It is believed that 84 different types of gemstones came into existence through king Bali’s body.

A similar story about Balasur is also famous about gemstones. According to Garud Purana, Balasur defeated lord Indra in a battle. Balasur was a demon, but he always kept his promises. He was also involved in donations and charities. Lord Indra disguised himself as a saint and asked for Balasur’s body for the purpose of a Yagya. When his body was burnt to ashes, mines were created at different places on earth wherever these ashes flew.

Another important story is also famous about the origin of gemstones. This story is related to the battle between the devas and the demons. During this battle, a lot of different things emerged from the sea. Out of these, there were 14 different types of gemstones. During the struggle for amrit (Holy water), some drops scattered throughout the earth. It is believed that mines were formed wherever these drops fell.
