Saint Vedvyas - Kashyap Rishi - The History of Astrology
Many saints have contributed to the formation of astrology. On account of all these efforts, astrology became very helpful in determining a person's past, future and present. From amongst all the astrologers, Saint Vedvyas and Kashyap held the great importance. They have developed several elements related to astrology.
Saint Vedvyas is believed to be Saint Parashar’s son. The form of astrology used in modern times is a part of Parashara astrology. Rishi Vedvyas is not only among those 18 saints who introduced astrology, but he also composed a mythological scripture called Mahabharata. Many events of Mahabharata came alive with his writing.
Saint Vedvyas was one of the greatest saints of ancient times. Moreover he has also witnessed the events that changed the era. Saint Vedvyas was the author of religious texts and vedas. He was a great scholar and (Mantra Drita) . The legend of ancient times & the author of literary philosophy, Saint Vedvyas is believed to be born on the day of Ashand Purnima. Vedvyas is considered the founder of Vedanta Darshan and Advaitvad. His wife’s name was Aruni. She gave birth to their son ‘Shukra Dev’. Guru Purnima is celebrated on Saint Vedvyas’s day of birth.
In Dwapar Kaal, he incarnated into Vishnu Vyas and presented the different forms of Vedas. In Pratham Dwapar, Brahma himself was Vedvyas, in the second he was Prajapati, in the third he was Shukracharya, in the fourth he was Jupiter and just like all these, Indra, Dhananjay, Sun, Mrityu, Krishna Dwipayana Ashwathama etc. in total there were 28 incarnations of Vedvyas.They divided the different Vedas and Vedvyas also created 18 puranas.

Sage Vedvyas elaborated the meaning of Vedas. Vedvyas, with the orders of Brahma ji, distributed the knowledge of 4 vedas to 4 different sages. Jaimini astrology was introduced by Rishi Jaimini. He was one of the disciples of vedvyas. His disciples include Pail, aishbhpayan, Sumantumuni, Rom harshan and many more.
Names of Shastras Written by Vedvyas
Saint Vedvyas is called so because of his explanation of various Vedas. He shared his knowledge of four Vedas namely Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda to his disciples who were Pael, Jaimin, Vaishampayan & Sumantumuni. Due to the extensive knowledge in Vedas, Vedvyas ji formulated the Fifth Veda in the form of Puranas. Vedas are explained in a simple manner and in the form of stories in these Puranas.
The disciples of Ved Vyas ji made many branches and sub-branches of the Vedas. It is believed that God himself wrote Vedas by incarnating in the form of Vedvyas ji, that’s why Vyas ji is considered as one of the 24 incarnations of God. There is also a memoir written in his memory by the name of Vyas Smriti. He incarnates in different forms to explain and propagate about Vedas in different times. Vyas ji holds a prominent place in Indian culture. His contribution is evident in the form of scriptures Mahabharat, Puran, Shrimad Bhagvat, Brahmasutra Shastra, Mimansa etc.

Kashyap Rishi Role in History of Astrology
Rishi Kashyap is a very respected name of India’s Vedic astrology era. Rishi Kashyap was one of the 8 saints to start the Gautra rite. It is forbidden to marry bride and groom with same Gautra. Today also this rule is applied while match making. People, who marry with same Gautra , form a yoga of giving birth to a child with physical disabilities.
One of the greatest saints of ancient times has been Kashyap Rishi. In hindu culture, there is a detailed mention about him. This name is prominently used in Vedas, Purans and other scriptures. Kashyap Rishi has been given a place amongst seven important Rishis. Due to his devotion and knowledge he is considered the most superior of all the saints. He was a great saint with a religious and mysterious character.
We can learn about him from Aitriya Brahman, Kashyap was anointed as a king named Vishwakarma Bhavan. Apart from this as per Shatpath Brahman, Prajapati is called as Kashyap. In Mahabharat and Puranas it has been said the Brahma had 6 sons, out of which ‘Marichi’ created Kashyap named Prajapati Putra, who later married the seventeen daughters of Daksha Prajapati.
Gotras have been created and named after Kashyap Rishi. It is a very broad Gotra, if a person doesn’t know about his/her Gotra then he/she is considered to be of Kashyap Gotra. This is based on an old saying which says that all humans have originated from Kashyap Rishi. That’s why Kashyap Rishi is considered as the father of all creations.
Rishi Kashyap composed many more scriptures in astrology. They are mentioned in Gita Shrimedbhagwat. Rishi Kashyap has also contributed to the field of medical astrology in India. In ancient times Rishi Kashyap was counted among some great sages.
