The origin of astrology is believed to have been between 501 to 500 B.C. This was the period in which various scholars worked on six different principles of Vedanga namely, Shiksha, Kalpa, Vyakarana, Nirukta, Jyotisha (Astrology) and Chanda. Astrology developed rapidly in this period. Even the most important works of astrology were created during this period.

As stated by the inscriptions from that time, Astrology was not only an instrument to tell about one’s future but was also used for determining auspicious dates and times, for making important decisions and to begin various social practices.

The history of astrology is very old as it’s credibility is thus strengthened. The advent of the Vedas led to astrology. Astrology is a very ancient science, which helps in solving the mystery of past, present and future of the native. The saints who created Jyotisha are known as ‘Trikaal Drishti’. The methods that they used to create this science are also used to understand the mystery of life.

‘Jyothisham Sooryagrahanam Bodhak Shastra’ means that the astrological science which is used to study the Sun, planets and time. With the help of astrology, people can learn about eclipses, situation of planets, weather, etc.

Astrology lays a lot of Importance on creating Panchang. Mathematics is also mentioned under astrology. Three ‘Bhed’ have been mentioned in astrology, out of which ‘Hora, Siddhant & Samhita’ are important.


Hora -

Under this, a person’s happiness, good and bad fortune can be studied. It is also known as ‘Jatak Shastra’. The position of the planets are determined at the time of birth and accordingly results of the twelve houses is derived. The native’s destiny is then predicted with all of this information.

Siddhant -

This is similar to mathematics which is used to calculate (). It is also called as ‘Ganit Siddhant’. In ancient times, its definition was only considered as a mathematical principle..

Samhita -

Samhita Sahastra Under this, things like land refinement, refinement of directions, home entrance, Muhurt thoughts, when will Manglik works, Shagun idea etc falls under this. Samhita Sahastra was begin during the period of Aadikaal, in this period it is growing rapidly.

Geometry in early middle age - 501-1000

No specific fact can be ascertained about the time of the beginning of astrology. Astrology helps us in unraveling the mystery of humanity and the world. ‘Adikal’ is considered as the rise of astrology. At this time, Vedas, Aryan and Brahmin texts could be found. During this time only 6 Vedangas were discovered - Shiksha, Kalpa, Vyakran, Nirakti, Jyotisha & Chhand.

During this period every individual took the next step of life in synchronization with the positions of planets and the science of Nakshatras, Many developments in calculation of multiples, division, squares, square roots, cubes, cube roots, differentials, denominators, algebra and equations, area calculations, trigonometry, and geometry were made during this period. The astronomers and astrologers of this period were in contact with the great thinkers of Greece and in communication with them they founded many principles. Of these the following were most prominent:

  • In an equilateral triangle.
  • The square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the other two angles.
  • Calculation of the areas of a square, or a cone.
  • And the rules that govern the circumference of the circle.
  • These rules prove to be very useful for reaching a kind of steak decision.

    Astrology in Early Middle Age

    In addition, the works of this period included Nakshatra paths, Sanhita Jyotisha, the paths of planets, the rise and fall of planets, earthquakes, winds and various auspicious and inauspicious Yogas. The results derived were only limited to the Panchang.

    Brahmagupta created Brahmasfut in this period. There was also an analysis of Akshansh, Deshantar, Sanhita Jyotisha etc in this period.

    In the early middle ages, astrology was on a progressive stage, during this period astrology analysts such as Vrahmir developed it a lot further. A lot of efforts were put in the 3 branches of astrology ie. Siddhant, Hora and Samhita. Along with this many new subjects were also developed. Many experiments were done in ‘falit jyotish’ and along with this jyotish was expanded at a larger level.

    During this time, in the field of planets & mathematics, three things namely ‘siddhant, tantra & karan’ were also propagated. At this time planetary mathematics was at its peak. The situation of the native’s life was understood with the help of the position of nine planets and along with this the world's welfare and the scientificness of religion also came in front of everyone with power.

    At the same time, when India came in contact with other people, a lot of new information gathered and their relationship with astrology and science has also been strengthened.
