In Vedic Astrology, a benefic planet is considered to have positive influence. Benefic planet means the planet that produces beneficial results where they are positioned as well as where they have an aspect. On the contrary, malefic planets produce negative influences.

Traditionally, the highest degree of being a benefic planet is considered to be with Jupiter. After that comes Venus and then Mercury is considered to be benefic. The  Moon is considered as benefic if its degree is less and if it is not Asth or if it is not conjunct with other malefic. 

Jupiter is the most benefic planet of all the 9 planets including Rahu and Ketu. It is believed that if Jupiter is placed in the ascendant most of the negative factors of the chart are diminished. This planet is airy, hot, masculine and known as the “Greater fortune”. It has Aakash Tatwa. Jupiter rules the north east direction and the beneficial Avastha( dasha ) of Jupiter is after 42. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer in 15 degrees. Horoscope strongly under the influence of Jupiter makes a native wise,  magnanimous,  jovial and mild in his actions. The benefic aspect of this planet makes a person uncomfortable while doing something wrong. The major parts governed by Jupiter are liver, lungs and veins. Jupiter rules the Sagittarius and Pisces zodiac signs.

Venus is the 2nd most benefic planet in the 9 planets. Venus is watery and rules south west direction. In today’s world it has been seen that Venus has more effect in material success. It is never more than 48 degrees away from the Sun. It takes 224 days and 7 hours for this planet to complete its orbit. Venus is the “Star of destiny” for Taurus and Libra as Venus rules these zodiac signs. Those having Venus exalted at birth are usually extremely beautiful with sparkling eyes, smooth face with dimples on their cheek. Love plays a very important role in the destiny of natives of Venus.

Mercury is considered to be a benefic planet if it is not Asth, is not aspected and is not afflicted by the other planet. Mercury has Earth Tatwa and it controls the northern direction. It  takes the quality of  the planets with which it is configured.. Mercury is always near to sun. It takes 87 days and 23 hours to complete the orbit. It is the ruler of Gemini and Virgo zodiac sign. The native born under the influence of Mercury have deep forehead, straight nose, thin lips and narrow face and strong memory.

The Moon is also considered benefic provided the moon is not of Amavasya. Also, the Moon is considered  to be exalted in Taurus up to 3 degrees. The Moon rules the mind of a Kaal Purush. Moon is cold, moist, watery, phlegmatic and nocturnal. The Moon influenced person has fair stature, pale complexion, round face, bright eyes thick and short arms. The Moon is easily influenced by every other force and this planet is more sensitive than any other planets. That is why a person born with even slightest of difference in time may change the degree and can change the complete personality of an individual. 

Hence, we can say that the order of benefic planets from highest level of benefic to the lowest is Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and Moon. The rest of the planets are considerd to be malefic. Although, it will be misleading to conclude with the thought that horoscopes ruled by benefic planets are better than ruled by malefic planets.
