Ekadashi Tithi is the eleventh date of a lunar month. A lunar month has 30 days and Ekadashi occurs twice in a month. One in Krishna Paksha and one in Shukla Paksha. This Tithi has more importance than other Tithis.

Ekadashi Fast Importance

Observing fast on both the Ekadashis is very fruitful. On this day, Lord Vishnu is worshiped. Donating gold, property, food, cows, and Kanyadaan on this day benefits multifold. All of these donations are considered equivalent to performing Yagya of 1000 Ashvamedha. Ekadashi Tithi is one of the Nanda Tithis.

    Putrda Ekadashi -

    This Ekadashi falls in Shukla Paksha of Paush lunar month. It is celebrated to seek the blessings of a child from the Lord. On this day fast is observed. Lord Vishnu is worshipped seeking a child and observing good health and fortune.

    Nirjala Ekadashi -

    Nirjala Ekadashi falls in Shukla Paksha of Jyeshta month. This is considered a very auspicious day and a person who observes fast on this day gets long life, salvation and fruitful results. This fast is kept without consuming anything, not even water. This is the reason the name of this fast is Nirjala, it means without water.

    Harishayana Ekadashi -

    It is believed that Lord Vishnu and all the Devas go to sleep for a period of four months. This month and Ekadashi marks the start of these four months when Devas rest and are in sleep mode. For this very reason this month name is named Hari Shayani.

    Hariprabodhini Ekadashi -

    The end of the four months when Lord Vishnu and Devas wake up from sleep is marked by this Ekadashi. This month is called Hariprobodhini and this day is celebrated as Hariprabodhini Ekadashi. This day is considered auspicious for marriage and other functions.
