Sawan Amavasya 2023 Know Importance

This year Shravan Amavasya will be celebrated on 17 July 2023. Amavasya in Savan month is also celebrated as ‘Hariyali Amavasya’. Apart from this, it is also called by other names like Chitalagi Amavasya, Chukkala Amavasya, Gatari Amavasya, etc.

The Savan month depicts changes in the weather. The scorching summer ends and there is rain everywhere. The nature around us fills up with beauty. In fact, the name of this month, its related fasts and festivals all of them are related to the season in which it falls.

Nature is worshipped on Shravan Amavasya

The festival of Hariyali Amavasya marks the arrival of greenery. Farmers predict the rains and crops as well as harvest on this day for the coming year. These are however very ancient practices based on folklore. Good omens in nature are also studied during this Amavasya. On this occasion, trees too are planted.

According to an ancient tradition, planting new trees on this day is considered auspicious. Worshipping trees on this day is also an age-old tradition. On this day, the banyan tree, Pipal tree, and Tulsi plants are worshipped.

In religious texts, God is considered omnipresent. He is believed to be present in everything, be it rivers, mountains, plants, trees, etc. For instance, Tridevs are considered to reside in the Pipal tree, Tulsi Puja is considered equivalent to Vishnu Swaroop, the banyan tree is considered as the Avatar of Lord Shiva, Lord Lakshmi Narayan is considered to reside in the Amla tree and so on.

Organisation of fairs on Savan Hariyali Amavasya

On the occasion of Shravan Hariyali Amavasya, fairs are organised in different parts of the country. They are primarily organised at religious places in which people of all age groups participate. Jaggery is also distributed amongst each other. Religious functions like Havan, Anushthan, Yagyas, Snan in holy rivers etc too are organised in these religious fairs.

  • On this day, it is a tradition to worship the plough and other agricultural tools.
  • Havan, Puja, etc. are organised on this day for the peace of departed souls.

    Importance of Shravan Amavasya

    Amavasya or Amavas will always hold a religious and spiritual significance in Hindu beliefs. Amavasya comes every month, but Shravan Amavasya comes in the month of Savan which is loved by Lord Shiva. Special Puja and charity are performed on this day. Due to the greenery in nature, it is also called Hariyali Amavasya. Hariyali Teej which comes two days from this day signifies prosperity.

    Pujan Vidhi of Shravan Amavasya

  • Amavasya is considered highly auspicious for ancestors. On this day Pitra Tarpan is performed for the peace of departed souls.
  • One makes food loved by their ancestors and distributes them amongst the Brahmins. Apart from this, the food is also distributed amongst cows and crows.
  • Lord Shiva is specially worshipped on this day.
  • Shiv Puja brings happiness, peace and wealth in the household.
  • Fast is also observed on this day.
  • The devotee should wear clean clothes after taking a bath in holy rivers and resolve to observe a fast.
  • Sattvik food is consumed in the evening which marks the completion of the fast.
  • The devotee gets wealth and prosperity by observing this fast with a clean heart.

After taking a bath in holy rivers and religious places, donations are given to Brahmins, poor and incapable people, according to capability.

Remedies for Savan Hariyali Amavasya

  • An oil Dipak is lit in front of the Pipal tree on this day.
  • A thread is tied around the Pipal tree and a total of seven Parikramas are done while tying the thread.
  • Apart from Pipal tree, banyan tree, banana tree, Tulsi, Shami, etc. trees are also worshipped on this day.
  • It is believed that Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh reside in the Pipal tree. Worshipping this tree brings Griha Shanti.
  • It is believed that Lord Lakshmi Narayan resides in the Amla tree, so worshipping this tree brings good health.
  • It is believed that offering Malpua as Bhog to Shivling on this day brings prosperity.
  • Offering black sesame seeds to Lord Shiva on the Savan Amavasya day gives eliminates all grief from one’s life.
  • Feeding wheat flour and sugar to the ants brings wealth.
  • Applying Chandan on the Shivling improves one’s beauty.
  • Shivling Abhishek blesses one with progeny.

Savan Amavasya importance

The Narada Purana states when a devotee performs Puja and plants a tree on Savan Amavasya, it can lead to the salvation of the devotee. Marriage and child-related problems too are resolved. Obstructions in marriage can be resolved by worshipping Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva together. Every Amavasya and Purnima has its effect according to the month in which it falls. According to planets and Nakshatras, its impact can be seen on every sun sign. Those suffering from Kaal Sarp Dosh should perform Sarp Puja on this Savan Amavasya to get relief.
