According to hinsu scriptures, amavasya that lies on Tuesday is known as Bhaumvati Amavasya. All kinds of pitra related activities are performed on this day. It is believed that the one who performs pitra daan and tarpan on Bhaumvati amavasya gets blessings from Pitra.

Making donations, holy bath etc. on the day of Bhaumvati Amavasya has special significance in hinduism. According to saint Vyas, performing holy bath and charity on this day give results equivalent to the result by donating thousand cows. There is a tradition of worshipping peepal tree and Lord Vishnu on the day of Bhaumvati amavasya. People from around the world visit pilgrimage places such as Haridwar, Kaashi etc to take bath in holy rivers.

Taking a dip in Kurukshetra’s Brahma Sarovar on this day has a special significance and considered to be very auspicious. A person who performs charity and holy bath at this place is blessed with fruitful results. Thousands of devotees can be seen bathing in holy rivers from sunrise to sunset. A devotee who performs all these activities gets all his wishes fulfilled.

Significance of Bhaumvati Amavasya

Amavasya lies in each month of lunar calendar. The moon has two phases : Shukla paksha and Krishna paksha. The end of Krishna paksha is marked by amavasya, whereas end of Shukla paksha is marked by poornima.

Performing donations, holy bath, fasts, tarpan, homas in  the name of dead ancestors are considered auspicious. The amavasya of jyeshtha maas is comparatively more important as compared to other amavasya. As per the rituals described in ancient scriptures, a person should wake up early in the morning on the amavasya of jyeshtha maas and worship the lord.

On the tithi of Bhaumvati amavasya all the activities are performed in devotion of dead ancestors of the family for their salvations. As per the scriptures, Pitra deva is the lord of Amavasya which is why tarpan, homas, pitradaan have special significance on this tithi. Amavasya that lies on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday during Anuradha, Vishakha or Swati nakshatra is considered very auspicious. Similarly, yogas of amavasya formed on Saturday and Chaturdashi also give good results.

People who perform tarpan, homas donation, holy bath in these yogas get relief from all sins and attains salvation in the end. There are some rituals of fasts described in various hindu scriptures which should be performed with faith and devotion to get relief from the physical, mental and financial sufferings of life.
