Planets are divided into natural benefics, natural malefics, conditional benefics and conditional malefics as follows:

  • Natural benefics are: Jupiter and Venus.
  • Natural malefics are: Saturn, Mars and Sun
  • Conditional benefics are: the Moon if not afflicted being very near to the Sun, Mercury if not afflicted and unafflicted Rahu-Ketu in good houses.
  • Conditional malefics are: if the Moon is afflicted. Mercury is weak and afflicted and Rahu-Ketu in evil houses and afflicted by malefics.

    • There are twelve zodiac signs in Indian astrology. Each zodiac sign has a functional malefic and benefic planets in a natal chart. Rahu and Ketu are considered to be malefic planets for all zodiac signs. Usually, least number of malefic planets are for Gemini Ascendant. Most number of malefic planets are for Taurus, Virgo and Pisces ascendant. Whenever benefic planets in natal chart are weak due to strength, placement and affliction, they tend to cause delay, denial, difficulties, dissatisfaction, obstructions, emotional setbacks, etc.

    On the other hand, whenever benefic planets natal chart are well placed, strong and unafflicted, they tend to provide happiness, gains, success, fulfillment of desire in life and early settlement in life.     • From the above classification we can draw a conclusion on how for a particular Lagna, benefics and malefics are derived. Although owners of the 2nd, 8th and 12th house are neutral planets but can turn into benefics or malefics depending on how they are placed and associated in a horoscope.

    The Most potent malefic for each Lagna is the eighth Lord. This is because the ninth house is the house of luck or destiny and father. Twelfth house from ninth is eighth house which is expenditure of ninth house. In fact, twelfth house from any house is the exhaustion of the signification of that house.

    • When a planet is both Lagna Lord and eighth Lord in case of Mars for Aries and Venus for Libra, as a general rule the Lagna Lord will prevail unless eighth Lord is severely inflicted.In cassifying malefics 3rd Lord is bad, 6th is worse and 11th is the worst Lord. Out of neutral Lords 2nd house Lord is bad, 12th house Lord is worse and eighth house Lord is worst.

    Similarly out of benefics 4th Lord is good, 7th Lord is better and 10th lord is the best.In case of trinal Lords, Lagna Lord is good, 5th Lord is better and ninth Lord is the best. Another important principle is that benefics as Kendra Lords lose their beneficence and malefics in Kendra Lords lose their maleficence.
