Ayanamsa Formula

Take a look at the following formula to calculate Ayanamsa for a given date is given:

For the beginning of the year:

A = 16.90709 x Year/10000 - 0.757371 x Year/1000 x Year/1000 - 6.92416100010001000

For any other date and month add the following also to get the correct

B = (Month-1 + date/30) X 1.1574074/1000

Ayanamsa = A + B

Let us calculate the Ayanamsa for 15-7-2009 (15th July 2009)

We have year = 2009, month = 7 (July = 7), date = 15

First we will calculate the value of ‘A’

A = 16.90709 x 2.009/1000 – 0.757371 x 2.009/1000 x 2.009/1000 - 6.92416

A = 33.96634381 – 3.056810703 - 6.92416

A = 23.9853731

Now we calculate the values of ‘B’

Using the formula B above, we get the following

B = 6.5 x 1.1574074/1000= 7.5231481/1000

B = 0.0075231481

Ayanamsa = A + B = 23.9853731 + 0.0075231481 = 23.9928962

Ayanamsa is very important for accuracy of horoscope otherwise all predictions can go wrong, Since Ayanamsa also affects the position of planets, it is all the more necessary to be as nearly correct as possible.The Ayanamsa used by Varahmira was Chitrapaksha which N.C Lahiri also found to be most appropriate.The true Ayanamsa is just diagonally opposite to Chitra Nakshatra.There are different Ayanamsa given by eminent astrologers like Lahiri, Raman, K.P, Yukteshwar, Devdutt and Pushya Paksha but majority of astrologers use Chitrapaksha of Lahiri which is near to the present precession.
