The date after Saptami Tithi of Chandra Maas is known as Ashtami Tithi. Since there are two Pakshas in Chandra, this Tithi comes twice in a month. The Tithi of Shukla Paksha is known as Shukla Paksha Ashtami. Pakshas are determined through Purnima and Amavasya. Krishna Paksha starts after Purnima and Shukla Paksha starts after Amavasya. The ruling Lord of this Tithi is Lord Shiva. This Tithi comes under the category of Jaya Tithis.

Lord Shiva is worshipped on Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha and not Shukla Paksha.

Sheetla Ashtami fast is observed on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in Chaitra month. At some places, this festival is also known as ‘Basoda’. On this day ‘Sheetla Mata’ is worshipped and food is consumed only after stars come up in the sky. It is believed that worshipping Sheetla Mata leads to immunity from diseases like chickenpox, measles etc. Mothers observe this fast for the good health of their children.

Ashtami Pujan -

Worshipping Goddess Gauri and Maa Durga on the Ashtami Tithi of Navratri holds great importance. Young girls who have not attained puberty are invited. They are worshipped and served food. This ritual is called ‘Kanya Pujan’.

Radha Ashtami -

Radha Ashtami festival is celebrated on the Ashtami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapad month. It is believed that Radha ji came into existence on this day. As per Padma Purana, Radha ji was born to Raja Vrishbhanu after a Yajna performed by Raja Vrishbhanu. Radha Ashtami is celebrated as a big festival in Vrindavan, Barsana and Brija.

Sita Ashtami -

Sita Ashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in Falgun month. This festival is also known as Sita or Janki Jayanti.
