Saint Durvasa – Durvasa Maharishi – Durvasa Muni – Sage Durvasa

Saint Durvasa was an ancient saint. He occupies a predominant position in the history of sages. He is a well known sage of Satyug, Tretya Yug and Dwapar Yug. Saint Durvasa was an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He was also known for his bad temper. Although he was respected for his knowledge and wisdom, everyone was scared of his anger. He had a habit of cursing people over small mistakes. But his anger was always short-lived and he himself used to tell the remedy to cut the effect of curse.

Birth story of Saint Durvasa

It is believed that, Saint Durvasa was an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He was the son of Sage Atri and Anusuya. Sage Atri was the human son of Lord Brahma and her wife was a loyal and a faithful women. One day Goddess Saraswati, Lakshami and Parvati decided to challenge Anusuya’s loyalty towards her husband. All the three goddesses compels their husbands i.e Lord Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva to test her loyalty.

Anusaya’s maintained her loyalty. As a result, all the three gods starts to live with her as her sons. After some time, on request of all the gods and goddesses she releases them. The trinity gods before leaving blesses her that portions of themselves would be born as her sons. Later on, she gave birth to Soma as an incarnation of Lord Brahma, Dattatreya as Vishnu’s incarnation and Durvasa as Shiva’s incarnation.

As per other legends, it is believed that Sage Atri performed severe penance along with his wife Anusaya on Trishkul mountain to obtain a son. Pleased with his penance, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva blessed the sage that all the three gods would be born to him as his sons.

After some time, Sage Atri was blessed with three sons. Lord Brahma incarnated in the form of Soma, Lord Vishnu’s incarnation was Dattatreya and Durvasa was born as an incarnation of Lord Shiva.

General Character of Saint Durvasa

Saint Durvasa kept on testing his devotees. Although he was a great sage, he failed to control his anger which became his weakness. He used to get highly aggressive at small issues sometimes and curse the person without thinking much.

Saint Durvasa cursed Shakuntala as a result of his anger due to which she had to suffer a lot in her life. No one was saved from his anger including gods, demons, general public etc.

Significant incidents of Saint Durvasa’s Life

Saint Durvasa has attained many powers with his hard penance and meditation. He was able to attain great achievements by adhering Ashtang yoga. Many such events of his life were remembered for centuries and became the origin of many other events in sequence.

Saint Durvasa and Kunti

Once Saint Durvasa was pleased with Kunti’s service and so gave her a mantra which enabled her to invoke any god of her choice to beget children by them. As a result of this boon she gave birth to pandavas, who brought significant changes in the history.

Saint Durvasa and Lord Krishna

Once Saint Durvasa decided to test the patience of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna serves him best without losing patience on saint’s odd demands. One day, Saint Durvasa asks Lord Krishna to apply the left over Kheer (sweet dish made with rice and milk) all over his body. Lord Krishna did as he was instructed and was blessed by a boon. Saint Durvasa blessed him with all the love present in the universe.

Saint Durvasa and Kind Ambarisha

Once Saint Durvasa visited King Ambarisha’s kingdom. The king was observing Ekadashi and Dwadashi fast on that day. After completing the rituals of the fast, the king offered prasad to Saint Durvasa on which the saint asked him to wait until he had finished his bath in the Yamuna river. The auspicious moment soon arrived when the king had to break his fast to fulfill his rite. But, Durvasa had not yet returned from his bath. After consulting the other priests present, the king broke his fast by taking a sip of water.

When saint Durvasa returned, he got angry knowing that the king had broke his fast. He created a demon out of a strand of his hair to kill Ambarisha. The king started remembering Lord Vishnu and as soon as the demon attacked him, his Sudarshan Charkra intervened and killed the demon and started chasing Durvasa.

Durvasa went to Brahma and Shiva for protection. Lord Shiva asked him to meet  Lord Vishnu, as he was the only one who could save him from the chakra. Lord Vishnu advised him to seek the king’s pardon for his mistake. Durvasa took this advise and returned to Ambarisha to apologize. On seeing his condition, King Ambarisha recalls the Sudarshan Chakra. Thus,  protecting Durvasa’s life.

There are many instances from the life of Saint Durvasa that reflects his life’s perspective. These incidence also helps in gaining knowledge.

Jyeshtha Sankranti 2025 – Jyeshtha Sankranti

Sun will enter Taurus sign during Jyeshtha Sankranti. Jyeshtha Sankranti will begin on 15th May 2025, The devotees who perform religious ceremonies like holy bath, donation, homas etc on this day are blessed with good results. Ganga Dussehra, Nirjala Ekadashi, Sakranti etc are important festivals of this month.

Yajnavalkya Jayanti – Yagyavalakya Jayanti 2025 – Sage Yajnavalkya – Yagyavalkya Jayanti Festival

Yagyavalakya is one of the greatest saints of ancient times. He was a scholar, an orator, wrote many mantras and had immense knowledge. His birth day is celebrated as Yagyavalakya Jayanti. This year, Yagyavalakya Jayanti will be celebrated on 04 March 2025. Yagyavalakya is considered to be an incarnation of Lord Brahma. He is known as Brahmarishi for the same reason. According to Sri Mad Bhagvat, he was born as a son to Devrat. He was blessed by Lord Sun and acquired knowledge from him.

Life Story of Yagyavalakya

Yagyavalakya was Vaishampayan’s disciple. He assisted King Janak in various matters and even acted as his Guru. Yagyavalakya is also known as Yogishwar Yagyavalakya. He was married to Mantredhi and Gargee. Yagyavalakya played an important role in writing various mantras and teaching them. Yagyavalakya was a disciple to Vaishampayan.

Yagyavalakya once argued with Vaishampayan due to which he asked Yagyavalakya to return the knowledge that he possessed. Yagyavalakya gave away all his knowledge which was gathered and acquired by other disciples of Vaishampayan. This branch of Yajurvaveda is known as Taitariya.

Yagyavalakya lost all his knowledge and hence, started worshipping Lord Sun. He asked Lord Sun to provide him with knowledge. Lord Sun was impressed and provided Yagyavalakya with the knowledge about Yajurvaveda’s mantras.

Due to the blessings of Lord Sun, Yagyavalakya had all the knowledge about Shukla Yajurvaveda or Vaijasneyi Sanhita. He later came to be known as Vaijasniya. Madhyandin branch of this Veda was acquired as Yagyavalakya acquired his knowledge during mid-day. Hence, we acquired Shukla Yajurvaveda through Yagyavalakya.

Scriptures written by Brahmarishi Yagyavalakya

The most important scripture written by Yagyavalakya is Shukla Yajurvaveda Sanhita. It’s 40 chapters explain Padyatmak mantra and Gadyatmak Yajurvaveda. Most people can be related to this branch of Vedas.

Another important scripture written by Saint Yagyavalakya is Shatpath Brahman. This scripture talks about Darsh, Paurnamas, Ishti, Pashubandh and Somyagya.

Brihadaranyakopnishad was also written by Saint Yagyavalakya. Yagyavalakya was born during the times of Vaishampayan, Shaktayan etc. Yagyavalakya Smriti is also a famous text besides Manu Smriti. Yagyavalakya’s importance and magnificence is depicted in all these scriptures.

Importance of Yagyavalakya Jayanti

Many Pujas, Sabhas and other events are organized on Yagyavalakya Jayanti. Also, scriptures written by him are read and talked about. People are enlightened by understanding his thoughts and guidelines. In Vedic literature, he wrote Shukla Yajurvaveda’s Vaijasniya branch.

Sage Aruni – Uddalak Aruni – Ved Aruni – Saint Uddalak Aruni

Sage Aruni was a skilled saint who always believed in principles and duties. Every one used to respect and praise Sage Aruni. Arunkopnishad and Kathupanishad also talk about the magnificence of Sage Aruni. His character and personality has been thoroughly explained in these Upanishads. Hence, Sage Aruni is also known as a great Upanishad saint. Sage Aruni is known by many different names including Uddalak, Uddalak Aruni, Upmanyu and Ved Aruni. He was a disciple to Saint Dhaumya.

Sage Aruni was devoted to his Guru

Saint Bhaum used to live in an asylum which he built in the forest. He was a great scholar and had immense knowledge about the Vedas. He had a lot of students. Aruni was one among his disciples. Aruni always followed Saint Bhaum’s orders and was a very obedient student. He was an average student when it came to studies. He was liked by Saint Bhaum because of his obedience.

According to a famous story about Sage Aruni, once there was a lot of rain in the asylum. The whole asylum was filled with water. The fields beside the asylum also started filling with water. Saint Bhaum was worried about the fields as he knew that the food and cereals would be destroyed if the fields were filled with water. He asked Sage Aruni to visit the fields to check if everything was alright. He also asked him to close the dam if he saw any danger.

Sage Aruni visited the fields and saw a broken wall due to which water was passing through into the fields. Aruni tried to stop the flow of water but could not succeed even after many efforts. Sage Aruni put his own body in the water’s way and this controlled the flow. Even the rain eventually stopped.

Saint Bhaum was worried about Sage Aruni as he did not come back to the asylum till night. He, along with a few other disciples visited the fields and started searching Sage Aruni. Saint Bhaum saw Aruni laid on the ground to stop the flow of water. He was filled with emotions when he saw this.

Saint Bhaum took hold of Aruni and hugged him tightly. Saint Bhaum was so impressed that he blessed Sage Aruni with immense knowledge. He also said that Sage Aruni would always be remembered as an obedient student. He also said that he would be named Uddalak which means ‘originated from water’. Hence, Sage Aruni came to be known as Uddalak and received immense knowledge even without studying.

Other Information related to Saint Uddalak Aruni

Kath Upanishad explains why Sage Aruni was a great scholar. He was also known as Vajshrawas. He was always involved in charities and yagyas. According to Chandogaya Upanishad, he was born to Uddalak Aruni and hence, came to be known by the same name.

Mangalnath Temple – Shri Mangalnath Temple – Lord Mangal

Mangalnath Temple is situated in the religious city of Ujjain, India. Lord Mangal is said to have taken birth from the womb of earth in Ujjain. Birth Story of Lord Mangal

As per the legends, a demon named Andhakasura performed a hard penance to please Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was pleased and offered him a blessing. Andhkarsura said that he wanted each drop of his blood to create a new form of the Demon. Lord Shiva granted him the wish and went back to heaven.

On getting his wish fulfilled, Andhkasura spread destruction around and due to the blessing of Lord Shiva no one was able to defeat him. In the end, everyone went to Lord Shiva and asked him to protect them from the wrath of Andhkasura. Lord Shiva battled with Andhakasura, but every time he used to attack the demon with his sword, the blood drop which fell on earth created another formof Andhakasur. After fighting for a long time, Lord Shiva got tired and drops of his sweat fell on earth, thus, dividing the earth into two parts. Lord Mangal came out of of the womb of earth and started absorbing every drop of blood of Andhkasura. Thus, preventing him from getting reborn from his blood drops. In this way, Lord Shiva won the battle against Andhkasura and killed him.

Adi Shankarachrya Jayanti – Adi Shankarachrya Jayanti 2025 – Shankarachrya Jayanti – Sri Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti

Adi Shankaracharya was a great Hindu scholar and dharma guru. He was born in 788 A.D. in the Kaldi district of Kerala to a Nambudri Brahmana family. Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti is celebrated on the Panchami of Vaishakh month. In 2025, Adi Shankaracharya  Jayanti will be celebrated on 02th May. He is considered to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He is also the creator of many Vedanta. Adi Shankaracharya lived his life as a saint and gave a new direction to the Hindu religion.

Puja and Havan are organized in many Shankaracharya Mathas on the sacred day of Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti. He is worshipped all around the country. Many satsangs are also orgnanized. Sanatan Dharma is also discussed in these places on this day.

It is believed that worshipping Adi Shankaracharya on this day relieves a person from all his problems. Dharma yatras and Shobha yatras are also organized on this day. Adi Shankaracharya Birth Story

Adi Shankaracharya was born on the sacred day of Vaishakh Shukla Panchami. He was an incarnation of Lord Shiva who was born in the Kaldi district of southern India. He was later known as Jagat Guru Adi Shankaracharya. Shiva Guru Namprudi did not have a child and hence worshipped Lord Shiva along with his wife, Vishishta devi. Lord Shiva was impressed by their devotion and appeared in their dream so that they could ask for what they wanted.

Namprudi asked for child who could possess all the knowledge and longevity. Lord Shiva denied this by saying that his son could not have both and that he would have to settle for one thing. Namprudi then said that he wanted his son to possess all the knowledge. Lord Shiva blessed them and said that a son would be born in their house who would be an incarnation of Lord Shiva.

Namprudi and Vishishta devi were blessed with a child who was named Shankar or Shankaracharya. This body gave hints in his childhood that he was not just a common boy. He learned all the Vedas when he was just seven years old, all the Shastras when he was just twelve years old and wrote Brahmasutra language when he was sixteen years old. He also created many Stadhik religious texts and was hence known as Guru Shankaracharya.

Significance of Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti

Ganga Jayanti 2025 – Ganga Saptami – Legend of Ganga – Ganga Puja

Ganga Jayanti is an important Hindu festival. Ganga Ji is believed to be originated on the day of Vaishakh Shukla Saptami and hence, Ganga Jayanti is celebrated on 05  May 2025. According to one more legend, it is said that when Lord Vishnu killed Bali in Vaman incarnation, Lord Brahma cleaned Lord Vishnu’s feet and kept the water in his kamandal. According to another legend, Lord Shiva sang a song for Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Narad Muni. Lord Vishnu started sweating and Lord Brahma kept this sweat in his kamandal. It is said that Ganga ji originated from this kamandal.

Significance Ganga Jayanti

According to Shastras, Ganga ji reached Lord Shiva’s hair from Swarg lok on the day of Vaishakh Shukla Paksha Saptami. Hence, this day is celebrated as Ganga Jayanti and Ganga Saptami. The day on which Ganga ji originated is known as Ganga Jayanti. In the same way, the day on which Ganga ji reached the earth is known as Ganga Dushera. Ganga ji is worshipped on this day. Taking baths in river Ganga and worshipping Ganga ji relieves a person from all sins and provides him with fame, happiness, and salvation. It is believed that people influenced by Mangal receive benefits by worshipping Ganga ji on this day.

According to Puranas, Ganga ji originated from Lord Vishnu’s thumb to bless the ashes of King Sagar’s 60000 sons who were turned to ashes by Kapil Muni’s curse. King Sagar’s successor, Bhagirath, offered prayers to Ganga ji and brought her to this earth. Hence, Ganga ji is also known as Bhagirathi.

Bagalamukhi Jayanti 2025 – Bagalamukhi Sadhna – Sri Bagalamukhi Jayanti – Maa Baglamukhi

Vaishakh Shukla Ashtami is celebrated as Ma Bagalamukhi Jayanti as she is believed to have been born on this day. In 2025, Bagalamukhi Jayanti will be celebrated on 05 May. A person should keep a fast on this day and should also worship Ma Bagalamukhi. This day is celebrated with a lot of excitement all around the country. Many Yagyas and other religious practices are also organized on this day. Devotees offer prayers in the daytime and the night is used for a Bhagvati Jagran.

Ma Bagalamukhi relieves a person from problems related to his enemies and negative energies. Ma Bagalamukhi is also known as Pitambara. It is believed that she loves yellow colour and hence, material which is yellow in colour is used for her puja etc. Ma Bagalamukhi’s complexion is also a shade of yellow and a person should wear yellow coloured clothes while worshipping Ma Bagalamukhi.

Devi Bagalamukhi is considered to be the eighth Mahavidya out of ten Mahavidyas. She possesses immense power and is worshipped to be victorious over enemies, arguments etc. Worshipping her relieves a person from all sorts of problems. Bagala has been derived from the Sanskrit word, Valga. This means ‘bride’ in Sanskrit. Ma Bagalamukhi has been given this name because of her beauty.

Ma Bagalamukhi can be seen riding a beautiful chariot and sitting on a throne. Both of these are embedded with gemstones. Ma Bagalamukhi’s devotees are victorious in every field. She is most impressed if yellow flowers and coconut are dedicated to her. Deepaks should also be dedicated with turmeric. Yellow clothes can also be offered. Reciting Ma Bagalamukhi’s mantras relieves a person from all problems.

Baglamukhi Story

A legend about Ma Bagalamukhi is very famous. According to this legend, there was a destructive storm at the time of Satyug. This storm started destroying everything and people became helpless. There was no one to protect the world. Seeing this, even Lord Vishnu was worried.

Lord Vishnu started worshipping Lord Shiva who told him that only Goddess Shakti could solve this crisis. Lord Vishnu offered his austerities and prayers near Hardira Sarovar. Goddess Shakti was impressed by his devotion and appeared in front of him through Mahapit Devi’s heart near the Haridra lake of Saurashtra district.

On the night of Chaturdashi, she appeared as Ma Bagalamukhi and blessed Lord Vishnu with a boon. Hence, the destructive storm could finally be stopped. Ma Bagalamukhi is also known as Beer Rati as she is considered to be equivalent to Lord Brahma’s weapons. Devi is also a form of Siddh Vidya. She is even worshipped by Tantriks.

Bagalamukhi Puja

On the day of Bagalamukhi Jayanti, devotees should wake up early to offer prayers to Ma Bagalamukhi. They should do this while wearing yellow coloured clothes. A person should perform sadhan in isolation or with an experienced sadhak. To worship Ma Bagalamukhi, a person should sit on a platform covered with yellow cloth. He should be facing east. Such a person should also paste a photo or painting of Ma Bagalamukhi in front of him.

After this, hands should be washed and lamps should be lit. Yellow rice, haridra, yellow flowers and dakshina should be held and prayers should be offered. Following the principles of Brahmacharya is necessary during this puja. For reciting mantras, the puja yantra is made of Chickpeas dal and should be kept on a silver utensil.

Bagalamukhi puja

श्री ब्रह्मास्त्र-विद्या बगलामुख्या नारद ऋषये नम: शिरसि।
त्रिष्टुप् छन्दसे नमो मुखे। श्री बगलामुखी दैवतायै नमो ह्रदये।
ह्रीं बीजाय नमो गुह्ये। स्वाहा शक्तये नम: पाद्यो:।
ऊँ नम: सर्वांगं श्री बगलामुखी देवता प्रसाद सिद्धयर्थ न्यासे विनियोग:।

Then the following should be recited :

ऊँ ऐं ह्रीं श्रीं बगलामुखी सर्वदृष्टानां मुखं स्तम्भिनि सकल मनोहारिणी अम्बिके इहागच्छ सन्निधि कुरू सर्वार्थ साधय साधय स्वाहा।

Now, worship Ma Bagalamukhi in the following way :

सौवर्णामनसंस्थितां त्रिनयनां पीतांशुकोल्लसिनीम्
हेमावांगरूचि शशांक मुकुटां सच्चम्पकस्रग्युताम्
हस्तैर्मुद़गर पाशवज्ररसना सम्बि भ्रति भूषणै
व्याप्तांगी बगलामुखी त्रिजगतां सस्तम्भिनौ चिन्तयेत्।

Mantra

ऊँ ह्रीं बगलामुखी सर्वदुष्टानां
वाचं मुखं पदं स्तंभय जिह्ववां कीलय
बुद्धि विनाशय ह्रीं ओम् स्वाहा।
