Chhath festival is associated with worship of Lord Sun. A person should pour water in front of the Sun during dawn and dusk, i.e, the first and last rays of light on the day of this festival. This festival is known as Chhath because of Surya Shashti fast. This festival provides happiness, prosperity and fulfills all kinds of desires. According to ancient mythological beliefs, it is believed that Chhath festival was first celebrated during Mahabharata. Chhath devi is believed to be Lord Sun’s sister. Lord Sun is worshipped to impress Chhath devi. This worship is carried out on the banks of Ganga, Yamuna or some other holy river.

Chhath Worship Dates

Chhath Puja is celebrated for four days. It is a very difficult and important festival. This festival begins on Kartik Shukla Chaturthi and ends on Kartik Shukla Saptami. During this period, a person keeping this fast does not even drink water. Chhath festival is celebrated with a lot of zeal and excitement in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. During this period, people usually go for shopping. People also buy fruits, sugarcane, soup etc.

Chhath Worship

Chhath worship begins from Kartik Shukla Chaturthi and ends on Kartik Shukla Saptami. The first day is celebrated as ‘Nahay-Khay’. The next day, Panchami, is celebrated as Kharna. People keeping a fast on this day eat Roti, Kheer and fruits in the evening.

A person keeping a fast does not drink water for 36 hours. Kharna worship welcomes Devi Shashti to a person’s house. This way, a person is blessed by Goddess Shakti and Lord Brahma. On the day of Shashti, a person should offer water to Sun during dusk. The next day, a person should offer water to Sun during dawn.

Chhath festival is celebrated all around the country. It is mostly celebrated in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Even some foreigners celebrate this festival with a lot of zeal and excitement. According to beliefs, Lord Sun is Chhath devi’s brother. This fast is kept with devotion and dedication. A person who does not have a child is blessed with a child. This fast also provides wealth, success and prosperity. People worship Lord Sun during Chhath festival. People stand in water, light lamps and offer water to Lord Sun during dawn and dusk.
