Determination of Longevity in Jaimini Astrology
In Jaimini system of Vedic Astrology, there are some specific combination for predicting the longevity of the native. Also check Kakshya Vridhi and Kakshaya Hrasa.
Kakshya is a term arrived at by mathematical calculation based on the movement or velocity of planets. On these basis each planet has been allotted a value as described below.
As per Jaimini, human life span is divided into three distinct categories:
- Short life up to 32 years
- Middle life 33 years to 64 years
- Long life 65 years to 100 years.
Ascertaining Longevity
Three sets of two factors each are employed for ascertaining longevity:
(a) Lords of Ascendant and the 8th house {b) Ascendant and Moon (c) Ascendant and Hora Ascendant.
Factors responsible for longevity
Find out the sign position of Moon and ascendant in each factor of short life (b) if one is in movable and other in dual sign.
- Short life is granted if (a) Moon sign and ascendant are in fixed sign (b) when one is in movable and the other is in dual sign.
- Medium life is granted if (a) one is in moveable sign and the other is in a fixed sign (b) both are in dual sign.
- Long life is granted if (a) when both are in moveable sign (b) one is in a fixed sign and the other is in a dual sign.
Similarly ascertain results of the other two factors, ascendant, eighth house, ascendant, Hora ascendant and see if they give the same results.
Calculations should be made in respect of all the three sets of factors.
Reconciliation of Contradictory Results
If two or all the three sets of factors reveal same term of life then it must be accepted.
If each set reveals different term then preference should be given to the term which is denoted by the Ascendant and Hora Ascendant.
However, when three different terms are obtained and Moon is located in the Ascendant or the 7th house, the term of longevity which is indicated by the Ascendant and Moon should be preferred.
Kakshya Vridhi (Additions in length of life) takes place when following conditions are fulfilled
1. Jupiter is in the ascendant, 7th or 5th house.
2. Natural benefics like Jupiter, Mercury and Venus in Ascendant, quadrants or in Trikonas.
3. Natural benefics are with Atmakaraka.
4. Atmakaraka is exalted.
5. Jupiter is Atmakaraka.
Kashaya Hrasa (Reduction in the length of life) takes place under the following conditions.
1. When malefics planets occupy Lagna or seventh house from Lagna.
2. When malefic planets are in fifth or ninth house from Lagna.
3. When Atmakarak is debilitated.
4. When Saturn is in the Ascendant, eighth house or in Hora ascendant.
5. When Saturn is associated with ascendant Lord or Hora ascendant Lord.
6. When Jupiter is in quadrant and aspected by Mars and Saturn.
7. When the Moon is in 8th or 12th house from the ascendant, but this will not apply for Cancer sign.
8. When Jupiter occupies a place from Lagna and in Dwara sign and Saturn is placed in a Bhoga Rasifron.
Kashaya years alloted to Planets are:
Sun 3years, Moon 1 year, waxing Moon, own sign and ascendant 6 years. Jupiter 6years, Exalted jupiter 12years, Mercury 3 years, venus 6years, saturn 5,6 or 7 years. Mars 2 or 3 years.
Add years of benefics in a horoscope and subtract years of malefics in Kakshya places.
After ascertaining the term of life based on the longevity formula by checking two similar options out of three, add or subtract the Kakshya years obtained to arrive at the age of the native.
