Nirjala Ekadasi Fast 2019 | Bheamsen Ekadahi

During the Hindu month, the Ekadasi date is considered very important. And in that nirjala ekadasi has been given special importance. Ekadasi date is considered dear to Lord Krishna. On the day of ekadasi it is advised to worship Lord Krishna and also to observe fast.

The shukla paksha of Jyeshtha month is known as Nirjala Ekadasi. In this year, this fast will be observed on 13 June 2019. On this ekadasi it is advised to observe fast. By observing this fast, the person gets longevity and salvation. Nirjala means without water, that is why this ekadasi is called as nirjala ekadasi. The person who is observing this fast does not consume water.

Bhimseni Ekadasi

Nirjala Ekadashi of the shukla paksha of jyeshtha month is also known as Bhimseni Ekadasi. According to Maharishi Vedvyas ji, this ekadasi was help by Bhim. For this reason, this Ekadasi was named as Bhimseni Ekadasi. By observing this ekadasi, the person gets the benefits of the total 24 ekadasis of the year. After observing this fast, on the day of dwadasi, the person should wake up before sunrise, have bath and offer food to brahmins and do charity. On this day, the person should chant ‘ Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya’, and should donate cows, clothes, fruits, chhatra etc.

Nirjala Ekadasi Puja

To observe the nirjala ekadasi fast, the rules should be followed from dashmi date. The person should recite, ‘ Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya’. Donating cow in this month is given special importance. In addition to fasting, it is also advised to recite mantras, tapas and ganga bath etc.

In this fast, firstly Lord Vishnu is worshipped and then the story behind the fast is heard. After the pooja, it is advised to give donation and sweets to brahmins according to your capability, and if possible a jagran should be performed on the day of fast.

Nirjala Ekadasi fast story

The story of this fast is like this- In Mahabharat, Bhim asked maharishi Vyas that, ‘ Dear Lord, Yudhishtir, Arjun, Nakul, Sahdev, Kunti and Draupadi observe the ekadasi fast, but i can’t stay hungry. I can give donation and impress Lord Vasudev by worshipping him. I want the benefits without harming my body. So, you help me, by telling how can i do it’.

To this maharishi Vyas replied- ‘ Dear Bhim, if you want to go to heaven, then observe this ekadasi fast without consuming food, as observing fast on the jyeshtha month ekadasi is given special importance. On the completion of this fast, water can be consumed. By eating food, this fast becomes broken’. According to Vyas Ji’s instructions, Bhim observed this fast and he became free from all his sins.

Significance of Nirjala Ekadasi fast

This fast starts from sunrise. On the day of dwadasi, the person should wake up before sunrise. Observing this fast is equivalent to having bath in all the pilgrimages. By observing nirjala ekadasi fast, the person gets free from all the sins. The person who observes nirjala ekadasi fast, is relieved from mental and physical pains during death. This ekadasi is also known as ‘ Pandava Ekadasi’.
