In 2023, Mahakaali Jayanti will be celebrated on 26  August , Goddess Kaali appeared in the manifestation of Mohini to kill Madhu and Kaitambh. The day when goddess appears in front of Lord Brahma from the body parts of Lord Shiva such as eyes, face, nose and arms, is celebrated as Mahakaali Jayanti. She was born for the destruction of devils.

Mahakaali is the feminine form of Lord Shiva. Mahakaali is incorporated from within Lord Shiva. This manifestation is known as Ardhnarishwar. They are the creators of the universe. Aagam Shastra have described them as the supreme power. Mahakaali is also known as Ardhratri (half night). She possess many arms and can take up any form. She is known for destruction of evils.

Goddess Mahakaali can be seen seated on a dead body of Lord Shiva. Her four arms depict destruction, raised to destroy evils. Her second arm holds a chopped head and the third one denotes safety from demons. The one who worships her is protected from demons and evils.

Appearance of Mahakaali

Goddess Mahakaali is sitting over the dead body. She looks scary with sharp teeth and witty laugh. She possesses four arms holding a sword in one arm, head of a demon in the second hand and the third one in Abhay Mudra. She has wild eyes and a protruding tongue. She wears a belt of severed heads. She is resides in cremation ground.

Mahakaali Story

According to the Hindu scriptures, the gods could not kill the demon Raktabija. The demon had a blessing of reproducing himself from every single drop of blood that touched the ground. Thus, whenever the gods used to attach him the blood dropped on the ground multiplied itself into an other demon. In despair, the gods turned to Lord Shiva. In order to kill Raktabija, Goddess Mahakaali appeared. She spread her tongue over the battlefield preventing even a single drop of Raktabija's blood from falling on the ground. Thus preventing Raktabija from reproducing himself.

Goddess Mahakaali is also known as Shyama, Kalika, Dakshina Kalika, Griha Kali, Kalratri, Bhadrakali etc.

Significance of Mahakaali Jayanti

On the day of Mahakaali Jayanti, Mahakaai Shatnaam Dhara Path is recited along with performing a homa. Sundar Kand is also recited at some places on Mahakali Jayanti to please goddess Mahakaali. Devotees actively participate in Mahakaali Puja. A person who worships her with full faith and dedication gets all his wishes fulfilled. The temple authorities organize yagya and bhandara for the devotees visiting the temple.
