Adi Shankaracharya was born on the sacred day of Vaishakh Shukla Panchami. He was an incarnation of Lord Shiva who was born in the Kaldi district of southern India. He was later known as Jagat Guru Adi Shankaracharya. Shiva Guru Namprudi did not have a child and hence worshipped Lord Shiva along with his wife, Vishishta devi. Lord Shiva was impressed by their devotion and appeared in their dream so that they could ask for what they wanted.

Namprudi asked for child who could possess all the knowledge and longevity. Lord Shiva denied this by saying that his son could not have both and that he would have to settle for one thing. Namprudi then said that he wanted his son to possess all the knowledge. Lord Shiva blessed them and said that a son would be born in their house who would be an incarnation of Lord Shiva.

Namprudi and Vishishta devi were blessed with a child who was named Shankar or Shankaracharya. This body gave hints in his childhood that he was not just a common boy. He learned all the Vedas when he was just seven years old, all the Shastras when he was just twelve years old and wrote Brahmasutra language when he was sixteen years old.
