In Vedic astrology, Rahu and Ketu are the names given to the two nodes at which the earth’s trajectory around the sun and the moon’s trajectory around the earth intersect.  Rahu and Ketu are not planets; however, they affect our lives to a great extent. In mythology, these two entities cause the two eclipses, solar and lunar. In a person’s birth chart, if the seven planets come in between rahu and ketu, then the person is believed to have kalasarpa dosha. This state can be remedied by the ritual kalasarpa dosha nivarana.

Nivarana means “getting rid” of something. In this case, there are many remedies to get over, ride through or get rid of this negative aspect of a horoscope. In Vedic astrology, Rahu is believed to be the head and Ketu is the tail of a serpent (sarpa).  Kala is the Lord of Death and because the puja or ritual removes all of this dosha, the ritual is called kalasarpa dosha nivarana.

Vedic astrologers also believe that it is best to perform the kalasarpa dosha nivarana for continuous joy and prosperity in the person affected by this dosha (or negative result) as this dosha is one of the worst to have on one’s natal chart as it is one of the most dangerous of all doshas. For a person whose natal chart has kalasarpa dosham, life will be full of difficulties such as bad health, bad habits, won’t be able to marry, may be jobless, etc.

The usual kalasarpa dosha nivarana remedies include praying to Lord Hanuman, feed ants and fish, wear the kaal sarpa dosha nivarana rudraksha mala as well as do the kalasarpa dosha nivarana or nagdosh nivarana puja. The term “nag” also means “serpent.  The rituals or puja that removes all the obstacles of kalasarpa dosha includes Ganapati sthapana, navagraha sthapana along with Brahma puja, 18000 recitals of rahu mantram, naag nagin puja and Mahamrityunjaya mantra. Kalasarpa dosha nivarana puja also has a fire ritual (havan) arati, flower offerings (pushpanjali) and the removal of naag naagin in running water. The entire puja will take about 4 days with about five priests doing all the work.

If the person with the kaal sarpa dosham performs this ritual with the help of the Vedic priests and follows all directions on how to get rid of the resulting objects which have absorbed all the negative energy of the effects of rahu and ketu on their birth chart, s/he is believed to live a very happy life afterward.
