The auspicious duration of this Sankranti will last till afternoon on the next day. The month of Ashwin is the month of donation, religion and ancestors. This month is primarily known for worship, donation, service and fast. During this month, Shradh and Navratra of Sharad Paksha fall together, which make this month special. The festivals falling in this month will be as follows:

Pitripaksha Shradh
Ashwin Krishnapaksha is called as Pitripaksha. Shradhas are starting from 23rd September this year and these will last till 07th October 2010. In this Paksha, people make donations(Pindadan and Tarpan) and offerings with sesame seeds, grass, flowers, rice and Ganga water to their ancestors as per their date of death. After that, they also donate food, fruits and clothes to the Brahmins.

After getting satisfied with these offerings, ancestors bless the person with good health, long life, wealth and happiness. Sarva Pitri Shradha will fall on 07th October 2010 on the day of Amavasya. It is believed that all the deities become happy by the satisfaction and happiness of ancestors.

Shri Mahalakshmi Vrat
Women observe the fast for Mahalakshmi and fast for the longevity of their children on the eighth(1st October) of Krishnapaksha in the month of Ashwin. This Yoga strengthens the possibility of getting a child. Apart from this, fasting and worshiping for Mahalakshmi can be beneficial for the wealth and prosperity.

Gajachhaya Yoga
Gajachhaya Yoga is formed twice in Shradha Paksha. This Yoga will last from 10:58 to 13:19 on 5th October and from 07:43 to the sunset on 7th October. Bathing, recitation and donation of food, Tarpan, and Shradh are especially important during this Yoga.

Agyat Pitri Shradha

Navratras and Durga Pooja
Worshiping goddess Durga is considered very important in this month. This festival will start from 08th October in the year 2010. On this day after the establishment of pot and lighting Diyas, recitation of Durga Saptasati is started. Durga Pooja, worshiping young girls, and donations are significant during Navratras.

This festival starts from Pratipada. This is also called as Navratra Vrat. Barley is planted on this day. Durga Saptasati is recited regularly for nine days. The eighth of this month is also known as Maha Ashtami.

Festival of Vijayadashmi
The festival of Vijaya Dashmi will be celebrated on 17th October 2010 in Pradosh Kala with the burning of effigies of Ravana. Kartik Sankranti will start on the next day at 03:10 in the morning with the entry of Sun into Libra sign. The festival of Vijaya Dashmi is the symbol of triumph of good over evil.
